Newt on the NFL, 1807 "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

- Jeevy Computers: Move up to business-level cyber protection. https://www.jeevycomputers.com/pcs/ Good morning, Im still reporting on: Synopsis: Part of the overall attack on President Trump is to attack the very foundation of our love of country. Such is the case with this NFL dustup. Im so sick of this that I really dont want to waste much breath on it, however. First of all, this is really easy to solve. Just start pulling all the government financial support from teams that want to preach their new hate-America mantra. That includes billions for the building and renovations of their massive stadiums. As America begins to turn their backs on NFL football, a cascade of bad outcomes is inevitable. As the multi-millionaire players for those teams get cut as their franchises head for bankruptcy, they can absolutely have it their way and travel to exotic tourist destinations the world round to find new and exciting locations to play football. Im thinking specifically about Afghanistan, Pakistan, perhaps Vietnam, China and North Korea. There, there will be a huge natural audience of folks who feel the same way about America as these pampered football brats do. Newt put it with his usual succinct-ticity on Hannity tonight. - Denas Pain Relief Store: http://denaspainreliefstore.com/denas-pcm-6.html 503.395.4142 Good morning, Im still reporting on: Merkle Wins Shaky Victory in Germany, 1806 Synopsis: Good morning, Im Still reporting on the invasion. German Chancellor Angela Merkel was able to eek out a victory yesterday in the German federal elections for their federal parliament, the Bundestag. Although Merkel will get to serve her 4th 5-year term as Chancellor of Germany, it is difficult to see how she can put together a ruling leftist coalition because the only two parties which showed convincing voter gains were the two Republican-like parties, the pro-nationalist AfD (Alternative for Deutschland) and the pro-business FDP. On top of that, the vote counting in Berlin, a stronghold of the AfD, was still not in just before midnight, which is highly unusual for Germany. Gold prices to reach $1,400 before the end of the year GoldCore "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

by MarketWatch

Gold finished sharply higher on Monday, recouping roughly half of last weeks loss, as declines in the U.S. stock market and growing tensions between the U.S. and North Korea lifted prices for the yellow metal to the highest settlement in more than a week.

December gold rose $14, or 1.1%, to settle at $1,311.50 an ounce. Prices, which lost about 2.1% last week, saw their highest finish since Sept. 15, according to FastSet data as reported by Marketwatch.

The backdrop for gold today is as bullish as it has been in a long time, said Mark OByrne, research director at GoldCore in Dublin.

Gold in USD (5 years)

He expects gold prices to reach $1,400 before the end of the year.

With President Donald Trump in the White House and the political situation in the U.S. and globally more uncertain than it has been in many years, gold will almost certainly continue to see robust safe-haven demand, he said.

This should push gold higher in the coming months.

Recent military tensions between North Korea and the U.S. and its allies has helped to underpin golds haven status as a hedge against a sudden escalation in geopolitical tension.

Why Did Lois Lerner Walk?, 1804 "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

- Life Change Tea: Rid Your Body From Toxins! https://www.GetTheTea.com Good morning, Im still reporting on: Why Did Lois Lerner Walk?, 1804 Synopsis: In another more lawful time, the Lois Lerner / John Kosekin IRS scandal would have been front-page news in the Washington Post for months on end. But during the lawless years of the Obama administration, the IRS scandal was dwarfed by not only the magnitude of the other scandals, but the sheer number of them Benghazi the Hillary Clinton emails which revealed not only thousands of felonies for security violations but pay-for-play and bribery that in some cases went into pure treason. You need go no further than the Russian Uranium One deal, as just one example. Then there is the still unfolding Debbie Wasserman Schultz scandal which may yet yield a treasonous pipeline for highly-classified information from Congressional intelligence committees out to enemies of the United States. And thats not even to mention the alleged and ever-growing Clinton Crime Syndicates mysterious deaths list. Ive said it before, but it bears repeating. This overarching fear of the Clintons has hung over the nations capitol like a seething, black cloud since they arrived in 1992 carrying this reputation with them from Arkansas. The most concise explanation of what happened in the IRS scandal was tucked into the weekly Judicial Watch update. To summarize, nothing will be done because the Jim Comey FBI, and the Lorretta Lynch InJustice Department to illegally conspire with the IRS to have them give them one million records on Americans so they could go after people on Obama/Clinton yet-to-be revealed enemies list, to try to suppress anti-Clinton votes during the election season. The Roodman Replication "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

David Roodman, working for the Open Philanthropy Project, has completed an absolutely tremendous replication and extension of many papers in the literature on deterrence and crime. He reaches two conclusions. First:

I estimate, that at typical policy margins in the United States today, decarceration has zero net impact on crime. That estimate is uncertain, but at least as much evidence suggests that decarceration reduces crime as increases it. The crux of the matter is that tougher sentences hardly deter crime, and that while imprisoning people temporarily stops them from committing crime outside prison walls, it also tends to increase their criminality after release. As a result, tough-on-crime initiatives can reduce crime in the short run but cause offsetting harm in the long run.

Second:

Empirical social science researchor at least non-experimental social science researchshould not be taken at face value. Among three dozen studies I reviewed, I obtained or reconstructed the data and code for eight. Replication and reanalysis revealed significant methodological concerns in seven and led to major reinterpretations of four. These studies endured much tougher scrutiny from me than they did from peer reviewers in order to make it into academic journals. Yet given the stakes in lives and dollars, the added scrutiny was worth it. So from the point of view of decision makers who rely on academic research, todays peer review processes fall well short of the optimal.

My paper on Three Strikes with Eric Helland was one of the papers that Roodman replicated. (Fortunately, it did replicate with the exception of one error in a table.) I can vouch that Roodman gave us tougher scrutiny than did the peer reviewers.

Not surprisingly, I dont agree with all of Roodmans conclusions but rather than pushing back I think it more important to underline how impressive the replication project is. There are many review papers in economics but a replication project of this magnitude is nearly unprecedented. In our paper on the National Science Foundation, Tyler and I advised the NSF to put more efforts into replication. We wrote:

The NSF could support replication studies on a significant scale. A significant fraction of economic research does not easily replicateReplication and reproducibility studies are true public goods that are not rewarded highl...

Stop Wrapping the Flag Around Pro Sports "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

By: Ryan McMaken
nfl.PNG

Desperate to fill hours and hours of air time on 24-hour news channels, media corporations have made sure the discussion of the correct posture of National Football League players has been front and center.

Apparently, before grown men can chase a little toy around a grassy field for a few hours, it's absolutely essential that they take part in a variety of pro-government rituals. This was not always the case, though, and prior to the twentieth century, it was hardly expected that a ballgame be preceded by a recitation of the national anthem or any other song of national allegiance.

Indeed, the current pantomime in which NFL players are expected to stand at attention for the national anthem is of extremely recent origin. As Tom Curran pointed out on Comcast Sportsnet, prior to 2009, football players "weren't on the field for the national anthem and instead generally remained in the locker room."

And why did players start making a display of their "patriotism" in 2009? It turns out the government gave them taxpayer money to do so

In 2009, Barack Obama's Department of Defense began paying hundreds of thousands towards teams in a marketing strategy designed to show support for the troops and increase recruitments. The NFL then required all players and personnel to be on the sidelines during the national anthem, in exchange for taxpayers dollars. Prior, the national anthem was played in the stadium but players had the option of staying in the locker room before heading out to the field.

Furthermore, teams that showed "Veteran's Salutes" during games were paid upwards of $5.1 million dollars.

In total, 6.8 million in taxpayer money was doled out to sports teams mostly NFL teams for so-called "paid patriotism."

When the Pittsburgh Steelers elected to stay in the locker room during the anthem this past Sunday, this was denounced by man...

Carbon Taxes and Economic Growth "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

By: Robert P. Murphy
carbon.PNG

In a recent series of posts (here and here), I amplified some of Oren Casss strongest criticisms of the typical case for a US carbon tax. Seeing an opportunity for a zinger, Josiah Neeley at R Street put up a post entitled, Prominent carbon tax skeptic admits it could increase economic growth. Although I appreciate being dubbed prominent, as well see the R Street post is wrong in both title and in substance. Neeley is referring to my discussion of a capital tax cut offsetting the damage of a carbon tax, but that of course is far from saying a carbon tax could increase economic growth. Beyond that, Neeleys advice to me to advocate politically impossible outcomes is also dubious.

The Carbon Tax and Economic Growth

Though it may surprise you in light of the campaign being waged by a few vocal writers, the standard modeling results show that a carbon tax would be profoundly harmful for measured economic growth. Now to be clear, these standard models from the literature assume that greenhouse gas emissions on net pose a negative externality (at least after a certain point which they project humanity has already surpassed), and so they would conclude that some carbon tax would be justified for environmental reasons, even though it would reduce conventionally measured GDP growth and would feel burdensome to consumers in the form of higher electricity and gas prices.

To get a sense of just how onerous a carbon tax would be, I can refer you to the following diagram, taken from a 2013 Resources for the Future (RFF) study that was pro-carbon tax.

As the chart indicates, the RFF study which is quite orthodox in this literature concluded that even a 100% revenue-neutral carbon tax would reduce measured economic output if the carbon tax receipts were refunded back to citizens in any of these three ways: tax cuts on workers (red line), tax cuts on consumption (green line), or lump-sum dividend check mailed back to citizens (purple line).

The Spiritual Roots of War "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

Soul and Dominion

Maybe, like me, youve been thinkingor trying not to thinkabout war. You can feel it lately. Bloodlust sings triumphantly, punching air, marching from country to country.

To understand war, I think you must understand people.

War is just the manifestation of inner conflict. When there is an ideal that people aspire to, but cannot quite reach, then there is anger, fear, rage, envy, and all the rest. People seek scapegoats, enemies, sacrificial lambs. More than anything, they are seeking the causes of their own impurity, because its very hard for humans to believe, deep down, that they are anything but innately superior. So in a simple way, war is born from the pursuit of an unreachable ideal. This is the story of Germany, Italy, Japan, the USA, Sparta, Russia, and so on.

And yet there is still a question that lingers. Why do people need to believe they are superior to begin with? That is a very subtle question, a very hard question. We all believe it, good little capitalists, but if you try to answer it, you will soon be stumped. The answer is also very simple. Because thats the price of ego. Ego has a little benefit, a tiny one: it lets you think, and by thinking, you can imagine whole worlds to fantasize about in your mind. But its price is that it needs to believe that you are the best one, the only one deserving of such worldsor at least part of such a tribe, to which you can attach your ego.

That belief, of course, leaves a profound, deep void. You feel empty, hollow, as if there is something bigger and truer than just your grasping self, your strange and sad little ego. And yet you cant often admit it to yourself, because in the service of ego, soon enough, you become a rationalist, a materialist, an empiricist, and then there is war, because when you see the world as a rational material empire, then by definition you must fight for dominion over it. Ego is conquest for destiny, which is war.

So in that way war is distance. Distance from a greater truth. What is that greater truth?

We live in spiritually barren times. The ascent of the West has also been the suffocation of history, knowledge, beauty, and the rest of the world. And so Western dominances price has been a great forgetting. It was the East that created an art form of philosophical poetry, three millennia before the West supposes it invented philosophy. Did you know that? So the spiritual aridity of now is a consequence of forgetting yesterdays wisdom. Of course, this is just a little essay. What can I teach about you that wisdom in it? And what can you learn, if you are not ready to see?

We are one, only one, ever one. Western thinking...

Do we really need to play the Star-Spangled banner so much? "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

I say no, in my latest Bloomberg column.  Here is one bit:

We live in a country where very often the concession stands dont stop operating during the anthem, nor do fans stop walking through the concourse. Were fooling ourselves to think that current practices are really showing respect for the nation or its military.

And:

Anthem practices shouldnt be viewed as sacrosanct, and no one would think the absence of an anthem unpatriotic if expectations were set differently. Professional sports dont start their competitions with the Pledge of Allegiance, and that is hardly considered an act of treason. Nor do we play the anthem before movies, as is mandatory in India. Furthermore, The Star-Spangled Banner wasnt sanctioned by Congress as our national anthem until 1931. Earlier in the history of baseball, the anthem was played during the seventh-inning stretch. It was only during World War II that the anthem was played regularly at the beginning of each game, rather than for special games alone, such as the World Series.

Might we consider moving back to some of these earlier practices? To play the anthem before the players are present or during a mid-game break, or perhaps to cease the practice altogether?

Monster Sunspot Returns: Strong Solar Flares Could Be In The Offing "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

Monster sunspot AR2673, which unleashed two X-class solar flares earlier this month, has returned after a two-week trip around the farside of the sun. The formerly potent sunspot decayed while it was gone, and no longer appears to be a threat for strong flares.

http://www.spaceweather.com/

Region 2673 is now turning back into Earth view and as expected is heavily decayed. The chances for noteworthy solar flares will be low this time around. The formerly X-Flare producing region was reassigned AR 2682 on Sunday.

The Great Culling: The Truth About Water "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

The Great Culling of the human race already has begun. Covertly, insidiously, mercilessly, a global depopulation agenda has been launched.

As this plays out, the vast majority of the human race will be removed from the gene pool. Genetically annihilated. Will you and your genetic lineage survive?

It is being done through chemicals added to our drinking water, food, medicines, and the air we breathe chemicals that have the known effect of reducing fertility and shortening lifespan.

This documentary is the first of a three-part series. It shows how additives to our drinking water, such as fluoride, supposedly to combat tooth decay, in reality are covert doses of death. It also shows how you can protect yourself and your family.

Film-makers Paul Wittenberger (What In The World Are They Spraying?) and Chris Maple explore WHAT are the real threats to your life, your offspring and your genetic integrity?

Washington Has Initiated Military Conflict With Russia

Paul Craig Roberts

Russia has provided evidence that Washington is collaborating with ISIS in attacks on Russian forces. http://russia-insider.com/en/politics/breaking-russia-presents-satellite-proof-us-troops-collaborating-isis-syria/ri21030

In one Washington-directed attack, ISIS tried to capture 29 Russian military policemen. However, Russian special forces entered the fray, and the result was spectular losses for ISIS. http://russia-insider.com/en/military/us-secret-services-tried-nab-29-russian-troops-syria-and-got-their-butts-kicked-russian

In another attack Washington-directed attack, Russian General Valery Asapov and two Russian colonels were killed in an attack that violated agreements. http://www.moonofalabama.org/2017/09/syria-us-centcom-declares-war-on-russia.html#more

Sooner or later it will dawn on the Russian government that Washington is not a rational government with which diplomacy can be practiced, peace pursued, and agreements reached. Sooner or later it will dawn on the Russian government that far from being rational, Washington is a criminally insane collection of psychopaths in thrall to the military/security complex which, in turn, is in thrall to its massive profits.

In other words, for the powerful interest groups that control the US government, war is a profit center. No amount of Russian diplomacy can do anything about this fact.

It is unfortunate that the Russian government did not realize what it was dealing with. If the Russian government had not projected its own rationality on Washington, the war in Syria would have been over a couple of years ago. Instead, hoping for a settlement, the Russians were stop-go/stop-go, which gave Washington time to recover from the shock of Russian intervention and put in place plans to partition Syria in order to keep the conflict alive forever. Having dallied in hopes of a settlement, the danger of which The Saker warns us is real. http://thesaker.is/very-dangerous-escalation-in-syria/

A Brief History Of FAILED End Time Predictions "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

With the religious zealots making end times predictions for September 23rd, 2017, I thought this would be a good time to repost this article.  I can promise you that on September 24th, their claim will be added to the list

UPDATEHere it is, September 24th, 2017 and the world didnt end.  Wipe the surprised look off of my faceLOL  Once again, the religious zealots were wrong. Dont buy into their fear mongering. YOU have all the answers inside. Listen to your Higher Self and youll get all the answers you need. One of the most important things you can do is to SURRENDER to Creator/Source. Once you do, miracles will happen! Why? Because you learned to overcome CONTROL. This is how you can bypass all channeling, as well as lower dimensional tricksters who make endless promises that never come to fruition. Ill be writing more about this in an upcoming article about surrendering to source. Stay tuned and let the MIRACLES BEGIN!

A Brief History Of FAILED End Time Predictions

By Gregg Prescott, M.S.

What can we expect the day after the end of the world? According to wiki, there have been 183 end of the world predictions that have failed.  Many of these were prophesied by religious zealots through fear propaganda.

Here are just a few of them:

In 1284, Pope Innocent III (d. 1216) predicted that the world would end 666 years after the rise of Islam. (do you see how long the divide and conquer principle has been going on?)

In 1658, Christopher Columbus claimed that the world was created in 5343 BCE, and would last 7000 years. Assuming no year zero, that means the end would come in 1658.

Mathematician Jacob Bernoulli predicted a comet would destroy the earth on April 5, 1719.

The newly formed Seventh Day Adventists, a group founded by former Millerites, predicted the Second Coming would be in 1874.

Mother Shipton, a 15th-century prophet, was quoted as saying The world to an end shall come, In eighteen hundred and eighty one in a book published in 1862. In 1873 it was revealed to be a forgery; however, this did not stop some people from expecting the end.

Camille Flammarion predicted that the 1910 appea...

Ancient giants found buried in Alaska? "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

Ivan T. Sanderson, a famous US zoologist, once shared with the public a curious story about a letter he received from Alan Makshir, an engineer who was stationed on the Aleutian island of Shemya during World War II.

By Strange Sounds

While building an airstrip, his crew bulldozed a group of hills and discovered under several sedimentary layers what appeared to be human remains. The Alaskan mound was in fact a graveyard of gigantic human remains, consisting of crania and long leg bones.

The crania measured from 22 to 24 inches from base to crown (58 cm), and the width was 11 inches (30 cm). Since an adult skull normally measures about eight inches from back to front, such a large crania would imply an immense size for a normally proportioned human.

Ancient Giant Cemetery Uncovered in the Atlin Gold District in Alaska. via Greater ancestors.

The ancient giants had a double row of teeth and disproportionately flat heads.

Giant skulls with elongated shape found in Alaska.

Furthermore, every skull was said to have been neatly trepanned (a process of cutting a hole in the upper portion of the skull). The habit of flattening the skull of an infant and forcing it to grow in an elongated shape was a practice used by ancient Peruvians, the Mayas, and the Flathead Indians of Montana.

John McCain: My prognosis is very poor "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

John McCain reveals hes in very, very serious condition as he continues his battle against brain cancer

By Valerie Edwards and Keith Griffith

John McCain revealed his doctors gave him a very poor prognosis when he first found out about the rare and aggressive brain cancer that he continues to battle.

The Arizona senator said his doctors told him at the time that his condition was very, very serious.

So I just said, I understand. Now were going to do what we can, get the best doctors we can find and do the best we can. And at the same time, celebrate with gratitude a life well-lived, McCain said during an interview on 60 Minutes, that aired Sunday night.

McCain underwent surgery in July for a brain tumor that was later found to be a form of glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer that is nearly always fatal.

The Republican senator spoke candidly about the grim diagnosis following a routine doctors appointment.

McCain said he was leaving the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix after a routine checkup when he got an urgent call from his doctor.

Youve got to come back, he recalled the doctor saying.

Hey, today is Friday. Ill just come in on Monday. McCain replied.

But the doctor persisted, telling him: No, you have to come now. Its very serious. The doctors had discovered a blood clot above McCains left eye. They thought it was serious enough that they had to act immediately, he said.

Before the operation to remove the clot, the doctors mentioned glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.

But McCain said that the doctors hedged, trying to downplay concerns until tests confirmed the diagnosis.

Tell it to me straight I said, I can take it. Just tell me. And and then they were more forthcoming, McCain said.

Secret Space Program: Captain Mark Richards Total Recall VII "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

By Kerry Cassidy

This is my seventh interview with Captain MARK RICHARDS the publishing of this total recall has been delayed due to traveling.

Conducted August 2017, published September 20, 2017.

Note: This interview time was shorter than usual.  Only had 2 hours. Didnt get many of my questions answered.  Remaining list of questions sent to Mark after the interview.

I was not allowed a pencil or pen this time I was just given childrens crayons to take notes which made it hard however I persevered and got fairly detailed notes which are posted below.

NOTES

STATUS

Mark had some news related to being moved from his current cell however there is no clear information on where or when at this time.

CLARIFICATION ON MILITARY STATUS / ARMY / NAVY

Jo Ann (his wife) asked him a question she needed clarity on because of something someone at a recent talk had questioned.  Mark clarified that he was in the Army originally (at the age of 16 and younger.  This is similar to William Tompkins as he was spotted in part due to his father and grandfather (who both worked with Tesla) and recruited into Army.

After Vietnam he went from being a Lieutenant in the Army to being a Lieutenant in the Navy. a lateral move.  After Vietnam lots of men were being shipped out of the Army who then had no use for them.  Many moved to Navy.  The Air Force had no need a Marks services after the war because he was a helicopter pilot in Vietnam and they had plenty of pilots back then (after the end of the war).

He was also seen as an asset to the Army and the Navy because his best friend was/is a Raptor and they often went on missions for the military.

Gigantic Solar Eruptions Sweep the Magnetospheres of Jupiter, Saturn & Other Planets "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

By The Daily Galaxy

Could the flapping of a butterflys wings in Costa Rica set off a hurricane in California? The question has been scrutinized by chaos theorists, stock-market analysts and weather forecasters for decades. For most people, this hypothetical scenario may be difficult to imagine on Earth particularly when a real disaster strikes.

Yet, in space, similarly small fluctuations in the solar wind as it streams toward the Earths magnetic shield actually can affect the speed and strength of space hurricanes, researcher Katariina Nykyri of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University has reported. The study, published on September 19 in the Journal of Geophysical Research Space Physics, offers the first detailed description of the mechanism by which solar wind fluctuations can change the properties of so-called space hurricanes, affecting how plasma is transported into the Earths magnetic shield, or magnetosphere.

Those hurricanes are formed by a phenomenon known as Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) instability. As plasma from the Sun (solar wind) sweeps across the Earths magnetic boundary, it can produce large vortices (about 10,000-40,000 kilometers in size) along the boundary layer, Nykyri explained.

The KH wave, or space hurricane, is one of the major ways that solar wind transports energy, mass and momentum into the magnetosphere, said Nykyri, a professor of physics and a researcher with the Center for Space and Atmospheric Research at Embry-Riddles Daytona Beach, Fla., campus. Fluctuations in solar wind affect how quickly the KH waves grow and how large they become.

When solar wind speeds are faster, the fluctuations are more powerful, Nykyri reported, and they seed larger space hurricanes that can transport more plasma.

Gaining deeper insights into how solar wind conditions affect space hurricanes may someday provide better space-weather prediction and set the stage for safer satellite navigation through radiation belts, Nykyri said. This is because solar wi...

Satanic Fashion Show Inside St. Andrew Church in London During Fashion Week "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

By Vigilant Citizen

Turkish designer Dilara Findikoglus presented her Spring/Summer 2018 collection at London Fashion Week and it was nothing less than a satanic Black Mass. Indeed, the event took place at the altar of St Andrew Church in London and incorporated heavy occult and satanic symbolism. In short, the event summed up everything the fashion world is truly about.

While Dilara Findikoglu is said to an up-and-coming rebel of the fashion world, shes perfectly in line with the industrys philosophy. Shes not rebelling at all, shes doing what exactly the type of stuff they want her to do.

For this reason, celebrities such as Rihanna, FKA Twigs, and Grimes wear seen wearing Findikoglus creations.

Her latest fashion show featured artist Brooke Candy (her videos are full of MK imagery) and drag artist Violet Chachki.

Brooke Candy walks down the runway. For this event, the Church was transformed into an occult temple. More precisely: A Masonic lodge.

The backdrop is basically a mish-mash of Masonic-inspired imagery. On each side are the Masonic twin pillars. Between the pillars is the letter G inside an inverted pentagram. Underneath it is the all-seeing eye inside a hexagram. There is also the Masonic square and compass in there. To top it off, the runway was a checkerboard pattern. Heres a classic Masonic painting for compar...

Parker OBrien: "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

Parker OBrien:

Just invoking classical liberalism is not an argument. It is only ideology.

What is classical liberalism? Can you define it? If its just free choice, then of course it can justify everything from slavery to rape to murder, just as indeed it has historically in America. All we need to add is that blacks or womens dont have innate potential, and therefore, they deserve to be enslaved and exploited.

Classical liberalism is merely an American invention. One of the most foolish of American inventions. It is a way for American men named Parker now to have to do the hard work of thinking about what it means to be human, alive, aware, part of a society.

In that way, our opinions are equal. First, you are going to have to understand a little bit about what you are pretending to discuss. Of course, if you dont want to, or cannot learn, that is up to you.

Thanks,

Umair

Russian MOD Reveals Images Of US Forces Near To Daesh Operations "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

By The Sirius Report

The Russian Ministry of Defence (MOD) have published a series of images which appear to indicate that US Special Forces have enabled the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to advance unopposed through Daesh operational areas.

The following aerial photographs, courtesy of the Russian MOD, were taken in the period 8th to the 12th September which appear to show a significant number of American Hummer vehicles which are used by US Special Forces.

It is alleged that by moving unopposed through Daesh held areas the SDF were able to advance along the left shore of the Euphrates River towards Deir_ez_Zor. The images would appear to show clear evidence that US Special forces are located in Daesh strongholds with no evidence of any US coalition offensives to drive out the Daesh operatives. This would also suggest that the US coalition forces are able to move freely in and out of these Daesh controlled areas with no fear of attack.

The release of these images is a clear indication that as far as Moscow is concerned the gloves are now off. Whilst there is no doubt there has been extensive cooperation and back channels created, between Moscow and Washington, during ongoing operational activities inside Syria, they have grown tired of elements inside the US intelligence services who appear to be, at the very least, permitting Daesh operations to go unchecked.

What we can also say is that there is no doubt that these images are but a warning shot across the bows of Washington because Moscow will, in all likelihood, possess further and potentially more incriminating and highly damaging material. Whilst Washington will deny such claims and suggested these images are unreliable, the fallout at governmental and international levels will be significant. It is therefore imperative that the Trump administration privately addresses these and other operational issues inside Syria. otherwise the risk is yet further isolation of the US on the world stage.

175 U.S. patents prove that geoengineering and weather control technologies are REAL "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

By Mike Adams

The United States government has granted patent approval to at least 175 inventions and technologies that are officially recognized to control or augment weather systems. (See the full list below.)

For years, Dane Wigington, the founder of GeoengineeringWatch.com, has been mocked by the fake news media for daring to claim that weather control technology exists. Now, with two back-to-back superstorms targeting the United States of America in less than two weeks Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma more and more people are beginning to ask whether these storms are being influenced, augmented or even steered into their intended targets through the use of exotic technologies.

The idea seems outlandish at first glance. But then you might remember that Al Gore and the global warming crowd openly claim that humans influence the weather all the time, creating hurricanes, tornadoes, floods and droughts as a direct result of human activity. This view is openly endorsed by nearly the entire scientific community, including government agencies like the EPA, which claims that humans are directly altering the atmosphere, weather and ocean levels. Thus, even official science organizations openly support the notion that severe weather events are created by people. It is the foundational narrative underpinning global warming and climate change.

The U.S. government confirms that hundreds of technologies exist to control and influence powerful weather systems

Accordingly, anyone who says weather cant be influenced by humans must simultaneously reject the entire narrative of global warming and climate change, because they are based on essentially the same idea: That large-scale weather events can be directly influenced by human activity. In fact, according to Al Gore and the climate change alarmists, humans have so much control over the weather that todays scientists can accurately predict sea level rises a full century into the future, even when those same scientists cant accurately predict the track of a hurricane four days in advance. (Ponder all this for a moment)

Logically, all those media publishers calling Dane Wigington a conspiracy theorist for promoting the idea of large-scale weather control (geoengineering) must also label Al Gore a conspiracy theorist, too. But Gores conspiracies are even larger, as he claims humans can ra...

Why (American) Liberals Arent "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

Seeing Causes and Effects

Warning, youre going to hate this essay. Really, really hate it. Enjoy.

Whenever I ask my liberal friends about Trump, Brexit, and so on these days, they say: aggh, theyre just dumb racists. And I say: Stop. At this exact moment, you have stopped being a liberal. They look at me, angry, puzzled, furious. And then I have to explain why the line theyve been fed by a generation of coddled punditsthat the rise of the right is only because people are terribleis one billion percent wrong.

Its not enough to say people are racists. When you tell me what you see in a person, then I also see what is in you. Theres a man with a frown, muttering to himself. What do you see? Maybe you say: hes angry. But I see that he is disappointed, hurt, afraidthat somehow, from his parents, teachers, elders, he learned only this way to be. So which one should we call him?

To say that a person is something is to say thats in their nature. Now what about racism, hate, xenophobia? Are the people who suddenly espouse these things inherently, naturally different? Are these inborn traits? But thats the foundational conservative position: that some people are born ugly, foolish, blind, and therefore nobody deserves an equal chance to begin with. Theyre just dumb racists is a line that makes you a conservative the minute that you say it.

Now let us come back to racism, violence, and spite. There is no question that the US is a profoundly racist society. Ive lived it. You dont need to tell me about it. I was beaten up every day in school for not taking the pledge of allegiance because I thought the US was a racist hellhole, and I enjoyed every terrifying, exhilarating, righteous moment of those fights. And yet. Fighting blindly isnt enough if we wish to conquer our demons, not just express them.

So the question is: if racism and spite arent inborn, then they must be caused, so what causes them? We dont have to look too far for an answer. The history of the 20th century is the answer. How did Germany turn genocidal? Because the good...

Pacific Northwest Resident Documents Metallic Fibers Falling from Sky "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

By Buck Rogers

As the term geoengineering creeps evermore into public consciousness, people are being persuaded that weather modification schemes will play an important role in public safety as a response to climate change. Most people are behind the curve on this issue, though, as independent journalists and private individuals have for years been documenting what is is happening in our skies.

For the last several years, a Washington state resident has been documenting geoengineerinng activity in the skies over the Olympic Peninsula, reporting on unnatural cloud formations, atmospheric spraying, and electromagnetic warfare testing by the Navy. In addition to the obvious manipulations of the sky at large, she has documented an abundance of mysterious white fibrous materials falling from the sky.

In a post on September 6th, 2017, V. Susan Ferguson shares the following images along with an explanation of where her research in this matter has led to.

Regarding the above photo, she notes:

The above photo was taken by me a few months ago. Please note the patterns that look like spikes or limbs off a stem.  These remind me very much of the kind of cloud formations I often find on NASA Worldview now. This photo is enlarged and contrast enhanced to show the structural details. [...

A Strange Mystery in Colorado: Veterans Losing Their Hearing Suddenly "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

By Joseph P. Farrell

This is one of those articles that I have to share because of its very odd nature. Mr. H.B. found it, and when he sent it to me, he had to wonder if, perhaps, this was somehow connected to the strange mystery of the alleged sonic weapon being used against American diplomats in Cuba, which I blogged about earlier this week.

Heres the story:

Why are healthy young men in America suddenly going deaf?

Now this one is truly odd, because apparently at least one of these veterans claims to have seen Gurhka troops in northern Colorado:

For some time now, Dave Hodges of the Common Sense Show has been reporting on strange events taking place in Northern Colorado. Last year, before the presidential election, Hodges reported on sightings of foreign mercenaries and elite military personnel from Nepal known as Gurkhas in that part of the state. He pointed out at the time that Gurkhas were specially recruited by the British army in the mid-19th century because they are elite, highly trained soldiers. Interestingly, he noted, Gurkhas are trained to fight against guerrilla forces. What, he wondered, were they doing in Northern Colorado?

Which brings us to the mystery of the sudden hearing loss:

Now, another shocking, baffling and confusing development has arisen in the same area of the state: At least 15 otherwise healthy veterans have suddenly gone completely deaf.

Paul Martin, a friend of Hodges, recently contacted him to inform him of the strange development. An unnamed friend of Martin who lives in this area and is a very healthy veteran, had suddenly woken up one morning to find that he had totally lost his hearing. When he visited a good VA hospital in the area, they ran several tests but could find absolutely nothing wrong. One of the doctors there informed the man that he was the 15th person from the region that...

DEBUNKED: Hurricanes Harvey And Irma Were NOT Caused By Climate Change "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

By Amanda Prestigiacomo

New scientific data debunks the hyperventilating journalists suggesting the latest hurricanes to hit the United States, Harvey and Irma, were the cause of man-made Climate Change.

As explained by environmental analyst Nicholas Loris who cites findings and analysis from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration and the National Hurricane Center Man-made warming did not cause Harvey and Irma.

As carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions have increased, there have been no trends in global tropical cycle landfalls, states Loris. Before Harvey and Irma, with a little bit of luck, the United States was in a 12-year hurricane drought. More importantly, the average number of hurricanes per decade reaching landfall in the U.S. has fallen over the past 160 years.

Loris, a Herbert and Joyce Morgan fellow, goes on to reiterate that his analysis is rooted in mainstream science.

This comes not via denier data, but from mainstream science, he writes. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reported in its most recent scientific assessment that (n)o robust trends in annual numbers of tropical storms, hurricanes, and major hurricanes have been identified over the past 100 years in the North Atlantic basin, and that there are no significant observed trends in global tropical cyclone frequency.'

Further, as noted by the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration, It is premature to conclude that human activities and particularly greenhouse gas emissions that cause global warming have already had a detectable impact on Atlantic hurricane or global tropical cyclone activity.

Loris also debunks the notion that hurricanes are being so-called supercharged by man-made Climate Change, citing the former director of the National Hurricane Center, Bill Read.

This is not an uncommon occurrence to see storms grow and intensify rapidly in the western Gulf of Mexico. Thats as long as weve been tracking them that has occurred, Read told CNN when asked about the allegedly &...

The Political and Economic Mystiques of State Power "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

By: Richard M. Ebeling
Plunder

One of the great political mysteries has been the success of governments in ruling over societies with little opposition and resistance from the vast majority of the population, even when those governments have been brutal tyrannies and openly dictatorial in their control.

This has been true, no less, under democratic regimes, as well, under which levels of taxation have been far higher and the degrees of regulation over personal, social and economic activities often much more intrusive than under tyrants of bygone ages. This has been in spite of the fact that those governments are formally answerable to the people through regular elections determining who holds high political office with legitimized power over the electorates lives.

Conquest and Plunder as the Origin of the State

It has long been understood by historians that most modern States, such as in Europe, have their origins in conquest and plunder. Invading tribes and bands would vanquish existing rulers and their peoples, and settle down to permanently live off those whom they had not killed during the conquest.

The German sociologist, Franz Oppenheimer (18641943), especially emphasized this in his classic work on the origin of political power and authority, The State (1914). He argued that there are fundamentally two ways by which individuals may obtain the material means that they wish to have to maintain and improve their lives: the economic means and the political means: Said Oppenheimer:

There are two fundamentally opposed means whereby man, requiring sustenance, is impelled to obtain the necessary means for satisfying his desires. There are work or robbery, ones own labor and the forcible appropriation of the labor of others.

I propose in the following discussion to call ones own labor and the equivalent exchange of ones own labor for the labor of others, the economic means for the satisfaction of needs, while the unrequited appropriation of the labor of others will be called the political means ...

Oppenheimer warned that when individuals have the choice between these two methods for acquiring what they desire, people were too often tempted to use coercion rather than avenues of pea...

ISIL Now Defeated Whats Next? "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

Now that the Khazarian Mafia has failed with ISIS, what will they try next?

ISIS has been the secret mercenary army of the World Zionists through their cutouts Israel, Saudi Arabia, the CIA and the Pentagon. ISIS has now been defeated by Assads army and Russian Federation precision air power. This is the biggest defeat for the CIA since the bay of Pigs fiasco and Israels biggest setback ever.

By Peston James, Ph.D

To say that the Likudists are more upset than any other time in history would be an accurate statement. Their whole world is now crashing in on them ever since Alan Sabrosky, Ph.D. a well respected professor at the War College went public that the Mossad ran the attack on America on 9-11-01.

And Steve Pieczenik a well known and respected former Deputy Secretary of State and high ranking Intel official also disclosed that 9-11-01 was an inside job and named the actual stateside perps who were PNACers, top NeoCons and Israeli-America dual citizens.

Most Americans have no idea that it is the same worlds largest organized crime cabal who created, armed, and paid ISIS that also planned and executed the attack on America on 9-11-01, the World Zionists, also known as the Rothschild Khazarian Mafia (RKM).

Yes, it was the World Zionists led by the Israelis and assisted by the CIA, the Pentagon, and the Saudis who created, trained, supplied, deployed, and paid ISIS, ISIL, Daesh (best referred to as ISIS et al).

These mercenary army groups ISIS, ISIL, Daesh, etc. are all extensions of the same private World Zionist force. Top generals and officers in the US Military, the Pentagon and CIA know that ISIS is an extension of the Mujaheddin just as MS-13 is an extension of the Contras. The CIA and Pentagon go along with this creation and support for ISIS et al because they have been deeply infiltrated and hijacked by Dual citizens whose first allegiance is to Israel and the Greater Israel Plan.

You Can Only Choose One: Cheap Oil or a Weak Dollar "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

Glance at this chart of the trade-weighted U.S. dollar, and note the swing highs and lows in the price of oil per barrel around each peak and trough. You can look up historical inflation-adjusted prices of oil in USD on this handy chart: Crude Oil Prices 70 Year Historical Chart (macrotrends.net)

The correlation isnt perfect, of course. Oil was relatively cheap between 1986 and 2003, due to a relative abundance of supply as Saudi Arabia and new fields ramped up production, with two periods of extreme price action: a brief spike higher in 1990 preceding the First Gulf War, and a collapse to $17 in the 1998 Asian Contagion financial crisis.

Geopolitical crises, wars and supply shocks will move oil prices regardless of the value of the USD. That said, its clear that absent such shocks, there is a strong correlation between a stronger USD and lower oil prices (in USD of course) and a weaker dollar and higher oil prices.

The reason why is straightforward: if the dollar gains purchasing power against other currencies, it buys more oil for each dollar.

Conversely, when the USD weakens, its purchasing power declines and it takes more USD to buy an imported barrel of oil.

(Note that the price of domestically produced oil is largely set on the global marketplace. West Texas crude oil may be a few dollars less per barrel than Brent crude oil, but if the global price skyrockets, so does the price of US-produced crude.)

Since oil and gas are the essential resources of the industrial economy, the price paid by consumers and commercial users matter.

The one way the US can get an across-the-board global discount on oil is to push the purchasing power of the USD higher. That is an enormous benefit that few commentators ever mention. Instead, pundits talk about the benefits of a weaker dollar, which boil down to lower priced exports.

Which matters most to households and enterprises? A tiny blip higher in exports (a relatively modest slice of the U.S. economy) or lower energy prices at the pump?

Dozens of Internet users from across the country are traveling to the Capitol to meet directly with Congress about Internet freedom

WASHINGTON, DC More than 60 Internet users traveling from as far away as Alaska, California, Kansas, and Utah are participating in a unique advocacy effort this Wednesday, September 27 descending on the U.S. capitol not for a rally but to meet directly with their Senators and Representatives in support of Title II net neutrality protections.

The participants, recruited through an online campaign spread through email and social media include small business owners, students, IT professionals, startup founders, single parents, and people from a wide range of political perspectives and representing more than 20 states. Fight for the Future launched a crowdfunding page where net neutrality supporters who couldnt attend the meetings in DC could chip in to help cover travel costs for others who need assistance.

The companies trying to kill net neutrality are spending millions on lobbyists who are hitting the Hill constantly to spread fear and misinformation, said Evan Greer, campaign director of Fight for the Future, Internet users, entrepreneurs, and small business owners have such critically important stories to tell about how Title II net neutrality protections directly impact their basic rights and their ability to put food on the table. Tomorrow, were harnessing the power of the Internet to make sure that those stories are heard over the noise of the telecom lobby.

A free and open internet is the lifeblood of small business in America, and Net Neutrality as protected in Title II, is what guarantees that the internet remains free and open, said Sean Frame, who runs a video production company in California and is traveling to DC to participate in the meetings, My business, and the businesses of my clients cannot survive if we are placed in the internet slow-lane while larger competitors buy faster access.

Lesley Perg, who is traveling from Minnesota, said, I am a PhD climate scientist on the American Care Act, an avid backpacker in our National Parks, and I tutor mainly immigrants and people of color in Adult Basic Education and Citizenship. For a time in the early 1990s, the newsletter was produced bilingually, with English and French pages inverted for easier reading and the additional title of Magazine Coop de Travail. The Fed Offensive: Raining Down Fire and Fury On ALL Markets This Week "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

Two weeks ago we discussed the Fed radio silence for the entire week before the FOMC meeting.

This is what it looked like:

Last week we of course we know what happened, which was basically nothing until talk turns into action.

This week, however, its going to be all about talking the markets. Every day of the week there are Fed speakers. What is particularly interesting is that today, Monday 9-25, the Fed will be jawboning in the morning, in the afternoon, and in the early evening.

Prepare for an all-out assault from the Fed, in addition to a heavy hand in the market (behind the scenes and not spoken of in the MSM of course):

What is the message here? The Fed is holding control of these markets like the over-protective parent who walks around with their kid on a leash. The kid is also wearing elbow pads, knee pads and a helmet. Not only that, but the Fed is carrying the kid even with all the measures taken to ensure safety. These markets can no longer walk on their own.

Last week finished the week rather optimistic. Gold and silver fought hard and finished above the whole numbers.

For now, seeing as how the Fed will be engaged in their main policy tool (talking the markets) in addition to gold and silver starting the week off under considerable pressure, we might want to just cast aside the optimism and brace for impact.

And because we know the routine, lets focus for a minute on the importance of moving averages and how they have an impact on gold and silver prices.

Here is that all important 50-day moving average in the gold price:

Globe and Mail: More than 1,000 planned purpose-built rental units have instead been converted to condominiums in the Greater Toronto Area since Premier Kathleen Wynnes government expanded rent control in the spring, according to a new report that warns the regions rental supply crisis is poised to worsen.

And given how rent control can destroy cities this is a foreboding sign:

The report also warns that 85 per cent of the provinces existing stock of purpose-built rental buildings are more than 35 years old and will require higher levels of investment to maintain.

Congratulations to Unicorn Grocery "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

How can I fail to respond to the press release that has come through from the Manchester-based workers co-operative Unicorn Grocery?

The press release is advising me of some good news which, in fact, I had already heard elsewhere: that Unicorn has carried off the prize in the BBC Food and Farming awards as the best food retailer.

Unicorn, one of the countrys most successful workers co-ops and one which has contributed a great deal to the wider co-op movement, is 21 years old this year. It demonstrated the success of raising investment funds from within the community long before everyone else was talking of community shares, and it has already taken the BBC prize once before, in 2008.

One of the things I learned when I was researching the later nineteenth century co-operative movement a couple of years ago was the strength and importance of the co-operative flour mills in several northern towns, most notably the societies in Sowerby Bridge (which also had a mill in Hebden Bridge and was the largest in the country) and in Halifax. What we would now call food politics was an issue early co-operators understood, too. Its good that co-ops like Unicorn continue the tradition.

Doesn't Mexico Have Building Codes? "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

By: Ryan McMaken
MexCity85quake.jpg

During the 1987 Whittier Narrows earthquake in Los Angeles, my mother was working in downtown Los Angeles in one of the buildings then known as the Arco Towers

The building was of early 1970s vintage, but thanks to expensive technology introduced to help high-rises withstand earthquakes, the Arco Towers merely swayed from side to side, rather than collapse in response to the quake. That earthquake was a medium-sized earthquake (to use casual terminology), but the building is designed to withstand far larger tremors. Eight people died in the wake of the quake.

Two years earlier, the 1985 Mexico City earthquake struck with devastating results. While the earthquake was considerably stronger, the casualty totals were far beyond what we would expect were a similar quake to hit Los Angeles. While the number is still in dispute today, more than 30,000 people may have died in the quake, thanks largely to collapsed buildings.

Fortunately, the death toll in Tuesday's Mexico-City quake looks to be much, much smaller than was the case in 1985. So far, casualty counts number in the low hundreds.

The Wall Street Journal today attributes this to improvements in building codes:

Mexico Citys building codes improved dramatically in the years following the citys 1985 earthquake, a magnitude 8.1 temblor that killed more than 6,000 and toppled nearly 2,300 buildings, including hospitals, schools, hotels and entire high-rise apartment blocks.

After 1985, the building codes changed a lot, said Ricardo Warman, an architect who both builds and renovates houses in the Condesa and Roma neighborhoods of central Mexico City, among the hardest hit on Tuesday. That is why most of the buildings that fell are from the 1950s, 60s and 70s.

But why was Mexico still building earthquake-prone construction in the 1970s? By the mid-80s, California had already been at work addressing the earthquake issue for years.

Why didn't Mexican cities pass better building code laws before then?

Editor Mark OByrne

Dennis Gartman has called 2017s gold rally and he is now forecasting gold will be demonstrably higher rising to $1,400/oz in the coming months and rise by even more in euro terms.

In an interview on CNBC, he said that the recent correction in gold is but a mere pullback prior to much higher prices and gold is the one currency that will do the best of all.

Earlier this year Dennis Gartman, of the Gartman Letter, successfully called this years gold rally. In the year-to-date the precious metal is up by nearly 13%, thus outperforming the S&P 500 which is 12% higher.

A year from now, gold will be demonstrably higher than it is right nowI would certainly think we could see $1400 [an ounce] in dollar terms.

Gartmans prediction comes a few days after another respected investor, Ray Dalio, called for gold to be held in portfolios.

Both Gartman and Dalio encourage gold investment as they believe it is an excellent diversifier and will be among the best performing currencies.

Their comments came following an intense week both political and economic developments, across the globe.

Why the World Feels Like Its Going Crazy "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

The Dominos and the Fall

America, the UK, and now Germany. Trump, Brexit, the AfD. An extremist wave sweeping the globe like an epidemic of the plague. Id like to be able to tell you: itll pass, and everything will be fine. Instead, I think that you should (really) understand it.

So lets discuss it.

Is it just a coincidence that the US, UK, and Germany (not to mention Turkey, Hungary, and so on) have all swung hard right in the last year or so? That suddenly one day, the citizens of three of the worlds richest countries woke up and decided collectively on extremism, for no underlying, connected, shared reason? Does that sound plausible? I think that the opposite is true: to any reasonable person, there is now a sharp trend very clearly visible. And as with any trend, there must be a cause.

What is that cause? Its very simple. Painfully simple, in fact. These three countries have followed policies of extreme wage repression. Incomes deliberately werent allowed to rise. Lets take them one by one, starting with the most recent example of an extremist swing, Germany:

On 20 January 2000, trade unions and employers associations explicitly declared that productivity increases should not be used for increases in real wages but for agreements that increase employment.

Germany decided to repress wages very deliberately, in order to raise employment, while lowering the price of exports. The UK repressed wages through innovations like zero-hours contracts, which raised employment, but in an empty way: people had jobs, but little actual worklet alone meaningful, good, beneficial work. And American wage repression is the most tragic of all: it dates to exactly 1971, the precise end of segregation, telling us that America never crafted a working social contract, and always depended on exploiting a powerless pool of low-cost labor, first black, now black and white alike.

Now of course each country has its own cultural issues, America has a long and terrible history of racism, for example. And yet culture cant explain such similar outcomes in three very different nations, because they dont share one. So culture alone isnt the proximate cause, the trigger, the spark, that we are looking forthough it might be the powder keg, poverty detonating latent racism, xenophobia, hate, everyday rage normalizing its expression. And that tells us something vital: just fighting what Americans call culture wars, what the rest of the world calls...

2018 Business History Conference Annual Meeting "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

Baltimore, Maryland, April 5 April 7, 2018

Proposals due October 2, 2017

Money, Finance, and Capital is the theme of the 2018 Business History Conference meeting. Historians who want to write compelling histories of capitalism must grapple with the manifold roles that money, finance, and capital have played in political, economic, social and cultural dynamics. Yet, for many years, the abstruse and elusive character of these phenomena encouraged many historians of economic life to maintain a safe distance from them. Of course, there have always been some historians willing to figure out where money, finance, and capital fit into broader histories of our societies. Still, much of what we know about currency and credit, investment and profit, bonds and futures results from highly specialised research whose technical quality reinforces the enigmatic character of these subjects.

Historians are not alone in encountering difficulties in making sense of money, finance, and capital. In 1931, for example, when distinguished British economist, John Maynard Keynes, gave a radio address on the slump, he emphasised that the behaviour of the financial system and the banking system is capable of suddenly going off the rails, so to speak, and interfering with everyones prosperity for obscure and complicated reasons. Keynes pointed out that it was unreasonable to expect the man in the street to understand such reasons. Yet, he also emphasised that professed experts tended to talk much greater rubbish than an ordinary man largely because the science of economics, of banking, of finance is in a backward state. More recently, Alan Greenspan infamously admitted his shocked disbelief at the onset of the recent crisis and former governor of the Bank of England, Mervyn King, portrayed money and finance as alchemy. Technical expertise in these domains, it seems, is not necessarily a route to greater understanding.

Fortunately, money, finance, and capital have moved to the forefront in many historiographies in recent years. Whether it is the business of slave plantations and trade, of consumer credit and railroading, of government finance, securities markets and international banking, the history of business offers exciting insights on these important and perplexing themes. That was already apparent in some of the pioneering research that historians carried out on money, finance, and capital and it has become clearer still with the recent new wave of research by political, cultural, social, literary and economic historians.

The theme of the 2018 BHC conference is designed to encourage contributions from a variety of approaches to historical research on the themes of money, finance, and capital, covering a broad range of periods and geographies. The program committee of David Sicilia (chair), Christy Ford Chapin, Per Hansen,...

Was banning Indian child labor counterproductive? "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

The authors are Prashant Bharadwaj, Leah K. Lakdawala, and Nicholas Li, and here is the abstract:

While bans against child labor are a common policy tool, there is very little empirical evidence validating their effectiveness. In this paper, we examine the consequences of Indias landmark legislation against child labor, the Child Labor (Prohibition and Regulation) Act of 1986. Using data from employment surveys conducted before and after the ban, and using age restrictions that determined who the ban applied to, we show that child wages decrease and child labor increases after the ban. These results are consistent with a theoretical model building on the seminal work of Basu and Van (1998) and Basu (2005), where families use child labor to reach subsistence constraints and where child wages decrease in response to bans, leading poor families to utilize more child labor. The increase in child labor comes at the expense of reduced school enrollment. We also examine the effects of the ban at the household level. Using linked consumption and expenditure data, we find that along various margins of household expenditure, consumption, calorie intake and asset holdings, households are worse off after the ban.

Im not trying to talk you into child labor with this post.  Rather, you should be less confident in a lot of your moralizing about what is a good policy or an evil policy.

Hat tip goes to Dev Patel.

What Ive been reading "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

1. The New Testament, translated by David Bentley Hart, Yale University Press.  Ive spent a good bit of time with this book, and if you own and read a few New Testaments, this should be one of them.  It is the most accurate translation conceptually and philosophically, taking care to render the Greek of that period as faithfully as possible.  It doesnt try to make the text read nice, nor does it make all of the books sound the same.  Of course, with any Bible translation you care both about a) what the authors really meant, and b) what other readers of the Bible thought they were imbibing.  By the very nature of its virtues, this volume is weak on b) precisely because it is strong on a), and thus it probably should not be your first translation.  Still, if you are tempted, this is more and better than just another New Testament.

2. Richard McGregor, Asias Reckoning: China, Japan, and the Fate of U.S. Power in the Pacific Century.  I am sick of books on these topics, because they tend to repeat the same old same old.  This one has fresh content on almost every page, and it is especially strong on explaining how the revisionist history debates in China and Japan fit into domestic politics and also foreign policy.

3. Barry Hatton, The Portuguese: A Modern History.  Portugal largely missed the Enlightenment.  This is the best introduction I know to that charming country.  In 1986, Portugal had only 123 miles of highway.  It had not occurred to me, by the way, that the 1974 coup was the first Western European revolution since 1848, unless you count the Nazis.  Here is a picture showing Portugal as an Atlantic rather than Mediterranean economy.  Explanation here.

Disrespecting The National Anthem And The American Flag Are Not Legitimate Forms Of Political Protest "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

This is going to backfire on the left in a major way.  On Sunday, more than a hundred NFL players knelt during the playing of the national anthem.  It was obviously an attempt to make some sort of public statement about President Trump, but it was an exceedingly poor way to go about doing that.  Because our young people are not even taught about the importance of our national anthem and our national flag in school, most of these players didnt even understand what they were doing.  Our anthem is sung and our flag is proudly displayed prior to major sporting events for a reason.  The truth is that our national anthem and our national flag are both symbols that directly represent our nation.  In other words, when you show disrespect to the anthem or to the flag you are literally showing disrespect to the United States of America.  So what these players did on Sunday was essentially to spit in the face of every single American citizen.

This is not just an American thing.  All over the world it is well understood that respect for the national flag and other national symbols is not optional.  What transpired at NFL games on Sunday will be broadcast all over the planet, and the rest of the world will be laughing at our national disgrace.

There's Nothing Moral about Opposing "Price-Gouging" "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

By: Christopher Westley
cuffs.PNG

Lets face it. The economic case for price gouging is one for which economists have both a strong argument and minority view, relative to more popular narratives drilled onto the three-by-five card of acceptable opinion. In that sense, we are in familiar territory, going back at least to Thomas Carlyles attack on economics as the dismal science when he realized economic arguments, when accepted by the broader population, would hasten the demise of slavery.

So I was not surprised when a good friend sent me a Dallas News op-ed by University of Texas sociologist Daniel Fridman raising moral objections to the economic case defending rising prices for necessities following natural disasters. I had an idea about the depth of Mr. Fridmans argument when he began acknowledging the economic case thusly:

[Some economists] claim that we should not mess with prices, whose job is to get goods to those who want them the most. If prices go up, buyers will think twice before purchasing something they may not need, while suppliers will be incentivized to go the extra mile and provide needed goods in order to make more money. If you take that extra gain away, you will have fewer goods and in the wrong hands.

There is some truth to this.

Its very broad-minded for Mr. Fridman to acknowledge some truth to the Laws of Supply and Demand. Coming from someone in the Peoples Republic of Austin, this must be something of a milestone. (One wonders what other natural laws in which he recognizes some truth.) But its not the truth of these laws that concern him. Rather, its how they ignore the moral case against gouging, which Mr. Fridman believes is understood almost universally. He writes:

The moral condemnation of price gouging is a recognition that in certain social situations, raising prices is kicking vulnerable people when they are down. Our reaction to price gouging is not some silly knee-jerk rejection from people who don't know enough about...

The flourishing Russian agriculture sector is gaining momentum as more countries start buying the countrys grain. Laos, Colombia, and Mexico, are the newest customers according to Russias food and safety watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor.

New markets are opening, like Laos and Colombia, which have never before purchased grain from us Mexico also began buying; we have already supplied about 300,000 tons of grain, the head of Rosselkhoznadzor Sergey Dankvert told Rossiya 24 TV Channel.

He said the 2017 wheat harvest is high quality and its necessary to keep it up because markets are won by good quality.

According to Dankvert, its important to diversify grain production. We need to produce the same amount of wheat, increasing, for example, the production of corn because of major importers like Iran and Turkey, he said.

Russia has recently boosted wheat export contracts on expectations of a record grain harvest. According to the Moscow-based grain consultant ProZerno, the country is projected to harvest 130.7 million metric tons this year. It is 2.6 percent more t...

New Zealand election result is anyones guess..National Party wins most votes but not enough to govern outright "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

http://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/2017/09/22/nz-election-result-anyones-guess

Two months ago New Zealands centre-right ruling National Party looked set to secure itself a fourth term in office.

Despite the shock resignation of Prime Minister John Key last December the party had retained its popularity and was well ahead in the polls under the leadership of Bill English.

But in recent weeks New Zealand politics has experienced more twists and turns than anyone could have reasonably predicted.

It started with three leadership changes.

The opposition Labour Party switched out its leader Andrew Little for deputy Jacinda Ardern at the beginning of August, skyrocketing its popularity in the polls from its lowest results in decades to its best since the Helen Clark days.

The Green Party weathered a scandal that claimed co-leader Metiria Tureis job her admission she committed benefit fraud coincided with a drop from a record high poll result of 16 per cent to below 5 per cent, a figure that, under Mixed-Member Proportional (MMP) voting would see the party booted from parliament.

Weekend reading "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

Its always useful to look at your country through the eyes of foreign observers.  I strongly encourage people to read this FT article, which discusses political correctness on campuses:

Since then, there has been a backlash against individual professors that seems only a step or two away from a Cultural Revolution-style shame circle.

If I were teaching freshman English, Id have students read a book on the Cultural Revolution, as well as 1984 and Brave New World.  Just to give them a better sense of whats happening in their own time and place.

If you look closely, however, there are actually two separate issues highlighted in the pieceleft wing bias, and obsession with safe spaces.  As this Reason post shows, Republican students are almost as dismissive of free speech as Democrats:

[Among college students] Just 44 percent of self-identified Republicans said that hate speech was protected by the First Amendment, compared with 39 percent of Democrats and 40 percent of independents.

It seems like the extreme fear of being made uncomfortable is a generational thing, which crosses party lines.  (BTW, dont take this as a typical boomer post trashing young people.  I think the millennials are much better than my generation in all sorts of dimensions.  For instance, they seem more polite and less violent.)

When I heard about Professor Weinsteins problems at Evergreen College, I wondered if I was getting the full story.  Maybe he was sort of provoking the students.  And then I read this, about another Evergreen professor:

Nancy Koppelman, an American studies and humanities professor, described being followed by white students who yelled and cursed at me, accused me of not caring about black and brown bodies, and claimed that if I did care I would follow their orders. Ms. Koppelman, who is 5-foot-1, said the students towered over her, and the only thing they would accept was my obedience. She reported that the encounter so unnerved her that she was left physically shaking.

During the Chinese Cultural Revolution, many of the victims were themselves devoted communists, who passioniately believed in the cause.  In Americas Cultural Revolution many of the victims are progressive faculty members.

During the early years of blogging, I followed bloggingheads.tv.  The best talks involved Glenn Loury and John McWhor...
