Retired General Nitpicks Trump, 1906 "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

Go to: https://www.virtualshield.com/billstill Good morning, Im still reporting on: Retired General Nitpicks Trump, 1906 Synopsis: Leave it to CNN to find an off-the-wall, retired 3-star who wanted to nitpick President Trumps Thanksgiving message to the American people yesterday. Lt. Gen. Mark Hertling, said the troops dont care about the fact that Trump lauded the newly-surging American economy. Surprisingly who came on Fox to defend the President this morning? Geraldo Rivera. [insert] Next to Shepherd Smith, Geraldo is my least favorite Fox reporter, however, we give him his due on this occasion. That was a very heartfelt and correct thing to say. President Trump is doing his very best to make America Great again and every blowhard in the nation is uses his unusual style to bash him and get their 15 seconds in the spotlight. I mean, I thought President Obama was a crook and a liar and even a traitor, but I have never said that amidst that special hush that falls over this great land on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Rhinos Are Behind Roy Moore Sabotage Campaign, 1903 "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

- Virtual Shield VPN - the easiest way to create a home VPN. Go to: https://www.virtualshield.com/billstill Good morning, Im still reporting on: Rhinos Are Behind Roy Moore Sabotage Campaign, 1903 Synopsis: According to the Liberty Conservative, Steve Bannon says it is the Rhino Republicans who are behind the very sophisticated and robust effort to sabotage Roy Moores senate campaign. At a speech on Tuesday in South Florida, repeated the stance that all freedom-loving politicians across the spectrum of American politics should be taking. According to Bannon: The people of Alabama have got to decide.... let people decide and well see how it turns out. Bannon said that information will come out that will prove that the women who have claimed sexual impropriety against Judge Moore have been part of a calculated hit by the GOP party establishment, that is, the Rhino Republicans. According to Bannon: Were not going to stop until Mitch McConnell is no longer majority leader. Roy Moore agrees: This is an effort by Mitch McConnell and his cronies to steal this election from the people of Alabama, and they will not stand for it. They overcame $30 million and voted me in the primary, and now they are trying a different tactic. We believe it is a bit more complicated than that. We believe this group is comprised of both Republicans and Democrats as well as major MSM figures. The uniting principle of these folks is not political it is the age-old concept of communal criminality. Some are thieves. Some are sex perverts. Some are just driven by that age-old lust for power. Many of this group would sell American freedom down the river for a peanut-butter and jelly sandwich rather that cross this group. Its Over! Roy Moore Will Win!, 1902 "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

- Trade Genius Academy: Learn the safe, sure way to trade. https://www.TradeGeniusAcademy.com Good morning, Im still reporting on: Its Over! Roy Moore Will Win!, 1902 Synopsis: A new opinion survey, released just hours ago shows that Roy Moores polling numbers are climbing again. He now leads his far-left-leaning Democrat opponent by 6 points. The poll was taken by Atlantic Media and Research between last Saturday and Tuesday - before news of President Trumps semi-endorsement of Roy Moore. It surveyed 623 voters who were very likely or definitely would be voting in the Dec. 12 election. All calls were made by live operators. 27% of the sample were identified as African-American. Moore leads 43-37. Both candidates have high negatives. Democrat Doug Jones leads Moore in the favorable/unfavorable race. Roy Moore has a favorable rating of 31% and an unfavorable rating of 39%. However, the Democrat has a 32% favorability rating and 35% unfavorable. However, 88% of Jones unfavorable are voting for Moore, only 75% of Moores unfavs are voting for Jones. Thats a 13% swing. The poll concluded by saying that the worst is over for Moore and that his conservative voters are trending back in his direction. Joness leftist agenda, including his strong and passionate advocacy for late-term abortions, has defined him as a radical extremist out of touch with Alabama voters. Once Thanksgiving and the Iron Bowl are out of the way, Alabamians will begin focusing on this race with scandal allegations fading in the rear-view mirror. If Jones isnt leading now, there is no way he is going to come back once the race returns to issues. Alabama is just too conservative a state to elect a radical pro-abortion extremist, even over a controversial candidate hated by the national party. World condemns deadly Egypt attack "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

Egyptian President Abdel-Fatah El Sisi said the attack on worshipers at a mosque in Sinai on November 24 was dastardly and cowardly [Courtesy: Egyptian State TV]

There has been a general outpouring of condemnation and grief over a bomb attack at a mosque in northern Sinai in Egypt, which killed at least 235 and wounded more than 100.

The Egyptian State Prosecutor issued a statement today saying that an improvised explosive device went off just as Muslim worshipers were gathering for Friday prayers at the Beur El Abes, in North Sinais Al-Arish city, shortly before noon.

The Interior Ministry said there were gunmen outside the mosque who fired at worshipers as they fled the explosion.

In Russia, the Kremlin said that President Vladimir Putin sent condolences to his Egyptian counterpart Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and pledged Moscows help in anti-terrorism efforts.

The murder of civilians in the course of an act of worship is striking with its cruelty and cynicism. We are once again convinced that the notion of human morality is absolutely alien to terrorists, Putin said in a statement released by the Kremlin.

El-Sisi on Friday evening strongly condemned the attack and said that his government would respond to the attack in the fiercest way.

We declared a state of mourning following this dastardly, cowardly terrorist attack which is targeting our stability, he said.

This attack strengthens our resolve and the resolve of our armed forces to respond strongly against this vile extremist takfiri terrorists, he added.

We are fighting this terrorism alone and on behalf of the world. They will not bend our resolve nor will they destroy what is left of our region.

Meanwhile, the United Arab Emirates Foreign Ministry condemned the attack and said this horrible crime exposes, beyond doubt, the ugly face of terrorism that does not respect the human soul and the sanctity of places of worship.

Iraq, which continues to suffer from deadly bombings including at places of worship, Bahrian and Kuwait also condemned the attack.

US President Donald Trump said the attack was cowardly.

The world cannot tolerate terrorism, we must defeat them militarily and discredit the extremist ideology that forms the basis of their existence! he Tweeted on Twitter.

Estonia, France, Israel, Palestine, Sweden and the UK also strongly condemned the attack.

Birthday of a Bloodbath "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

By: Paul G. Kengor
victims.PNG

This October-November 2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the launch of the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia the bloody communist state that would produce a political-ideological killing spree unlike any the world has ever seen.

And yet, communism continues to find supporters. Here are three personal anecdotes:

I did a conference this past week on the legacies of communism. One liberal professor complained that no pro-communist speakers were included. I wasnt surprised.

Another case: a former student of mine this week told me of his professor (at a local college in Pittsburgh) who was hailing Karl Marx for his brilliance. Again, no surprise.

One more: A student from the University of Wisconsin called in to a talk-show I did last week insisting that capitalism is just as lethal as communism.

That all happened just this past week, and its not unusual in my world.

Anecdotes aside, an October 2016 poll by the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation generated a stunning finding: almost one-third of Millennials believe more people were killed under George W. Bush than under Joseph Stalin. And it isnt only those silly Millennials. More than one in four Americans generally believe Bush was the bigger killer.

That same report found that the vast majority of Americans (75 percent) underestimate the number of people killed by communist regimes, and a large majority (68 percent) believe Hitler killed more people than Stalin.

This begs the question: how many people did these ideological gangsters kill?

Well, here at the centenary of communism, the number 100 is fitting, given that 100 million is a good stab at the number of people annihilated by the Marxist-Leninist pathology the Bolsheviks sought to spread worldwide.

The Harvard University Press classic, The Black Book of Communism, endeavored to tabulate a communist death toll in the 20th century. It came up with a figure of 100 million. The Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation also arrives at that figure. Cal-Berkeley professor Martin Malia aptly noted that the communist record offers the most colossal case of political carnage in history.

And even then, this frightening number 100 million dead is actually quite conservative.

Take the figure relating to the Soviet Union, for instance, where the Black Book...

Gabriel Calzada on Mises Weekends

Fifteen years ago Gabriel Calzada was a Fellow at the Mises Institute who aspired to bring the Spanish Scholastics' tradition of liberty to Latin America. Today he is president of Universidad Francisco Marroqun, the truly remarkable private school in Guatemala. All students at UFM, regardless of major, take a core curriculum in libertarian thought. The board of directors and almost all professors are entrepreneurs rather than academics. And UFM's charter provides the freedom to experiment and think outside the box, resulting in projects like a business cycle observatory and MOOCs (massive open online course) on subjects like Don Quixote. If you're interested in what entrepreneurial education grounded in free-market economics can look like, don't miss this interview.

Cryptocurrencies dont belong in central banks "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

That is the topic of my latest Bloomberg column.  Here is one excerpt:

If you think of these assets as cryptocurrencies, central bank involvement will seem natural, because of course central banks do manage currencies. Instead, this new class of assets is better conceptualized as ledger systems, designed to create agreement about some states of the world without the final judgment of a centralized authority, which use a crypto asset to pay participants for maintaining the flow and accuracy of information. Arguably these innovations come closer to being substitutes for corporations and legal systems than for currencies.

Put in those terms, an active (rather than merely supervisory) role for central banks in crypto assets is suddenly far from obvious. Consider other financial innovations: Does anyone suggest that central banks should run their own versions of ETFs or high-frequency trading? Is there a need for central banks to start managing the development of accounting and governance systems?

Central banks are too conservative anyway, which of course is how they should be.  Dont forget:

consider a simple question: Would any central bank have had the inspiration or taken the risk of initiating the bitcoin protocol in the first place?

Just in Time for the Holidays, Reckless States Are Coming for Your Online Purchases "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

By: Jos Nio
Uncle Sam Christmas2_0.png

If there is anything that gets demagogic politicians and pundits riled up, its the closing of tax loopholes, and the tax-hike demagogues might just be getting one of their wishes come December.

Bloomberg reports that most online consumers will pay sales taxes in some shape or form in the next few months.

Currently, consumers pay taxes on goods purchased straight from Amazon, but they can avoid paying taxes on goods if they purchase them through Amazons third-party merchants. By the start of December this could all change, as several merchants are expected to start collecting taxes in return for partial amnesty from alleged back taxes.

No stranger to inciting controversy, Donald Trump has even jumped into the fray by stating in an earlier tweet that Amazon has brought great damage to tax paying retailers.

Those in favor of closing sales-tax loopholes contend that retailers such as Amazon are supposedly responsible for tax-base erosion and other fiscal imbalances in the states that they operate in. Although well intentioned, calls for closing tax loopholes miss the mark. The underlying problems that are overlooked in this discussion are the burdensome tax policies and profligate spending programs already present in many states.

Unbeknownst to many pro-tax politicians, tax hikes not only hurt the businesses themselves through lagging production, they also hurt consumers as companies pass the costs onto consumers via higher prices on goods and services.

Most of the states that have clamored for the closing of loopholes are characterized by their already byzantine tax systems and unsustainable spending programs. Art Laffer of Laffer Curve fame has demonstrated that raising taxes does not necessarily lead to increased tax revenue.

With labor and capital being more mobile than ever, raising taxes or even adding more forms of taxation can have a contractionary effect on state budgets and economies. In effect, many businesses must seek greener pastures in low-tax jurisdictions, thus denying their home state potential tax revenue and possibly exacerbating budget deficits.

This type of dynamic ensures tax competition among states, w...

Understanding differences in life expectancy inequality "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

The life expectancy gap at age 40 between high income and low income individuals is substantial. I explore how medical expenditures and unhealthy behaviors account for the life expectancy gap. The data reveals the following. First, low income individuals tend to spend more on healthcare than high income individuals at all ages. Moreover, health disparities by income is salient due to differences in unhealthy behaviors such as heavy smoking. To answer how much dierences in access to medical services and unhealthy behaviors can explain in light of these stylized facts, I construct a life cycle model. The distinctive features of the model are that it flexibly incorporates unobserved, potentially correlated initial human and health capital stocks and embed unhealthy behaviors. Furthermore, the model includes two health systems: private health insurance and Medicare. The main findings are i) differences in access to medical care driven by income inequality potentially accounts for 12.5% of the life expectancy gap, ii) health insurance increases longevity for low income individuals, but modestly, iii) the health condition when young shapes the trend in average medical expenditures by income groups and iv) the impact of differences in unhealthy behaviors is predominant in understanding the life expectancy gap.

That is from Tomoaki Kotera, a job candidate from the University of Wisconsin, here is the paper itself.

What it would take to change my mind on net neutrality "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

Keep in mind, Ive favored net neutrality for most of my history as a blogger.  You really could change my mind back to that stance.  Here is what you should do:

1. Cite event study analysis showing changes in net neutrality will have significant and possibly significantly negative effects.

2. Discuss models of natural monopoly, and how those market structures may or may not distort product choice under a variety of institutional settings.

3. Start with a framework or analysis such as that of Joshua Gans and Michael Katz, and improve upon it or otherwise modify it.  Here is their abstract:

We correct and extend the results of Gans (2015) regarding the effects of net neutrality regulation on equilibrium outcomes in settings where a content provider sells its services to consumers for a fee. We examine both pricing and investment effects. We extend the earlier papers result that weak forms of net neutrality are ineffective and also show that even a strong form of net neutrality may be ineffective. In addition, we demonstrate that, when strong net neutrality does affect the equilibrium outcome, it may harm efficiency by distorting both ISP and content provider investment and service-quality choices.

Tell me, using something like their framework, why you think the relative preponderance of costs and benefits lies in one direction rather than another.

Consider Litan and Singer from the Progressive Policy Institute, they favor case-by-case adjudication, tell me why they are wrong.

Or read this piece by Nobel Laureate Vernon Smith, regulatory experts Bob Crandall, Alfred Kahn, and Bob Hahn, numerous internet experts, etc.:

In the authors shared opinion, the economic evidence does not support the regulations proposed in the Commissions Notice of Proposed Rulemaking Regarding Preserving the Open Internet and Broadband Industry Practices (the NPRM). To the contrary, the econ...

What Gratitude Means (to Me) "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

A Tiny Thanksgiving Remembrance

Thanksgiving is a strange holiday. Complicated, as we like to say these days, which the word we use to hide the frustration we feel when were confronted with perhaps the truest truth of this life: there is no such thing as a simple emotion. Thanksgiving comes with joy and happiness, but also with guilt and shame and fear, not just of family, but history, society, memory, and so we dread it as much as we anticipate it.

How we long for simplicity. We chase happiness and run away from sadness. But should we? I think: we can only ever let go of what we have held.

What do I mean? Let us examine ourselves together, you and I, gently.

My grandmother was a brave and beautiful and kind woman. I realized, one day, that this would be her last summer. That she would fade with every long perfect day into an endless autumn. And so one day, I just left work, not even telling anyone, and went to spend that whole last season with her.

What did I feel? A terrible sense of grief. She would ache at night, and moan, and sometimes, scream in pain. I would cry bitterly, sometimes screaming too, after those long days spent just gently holding her hand. Where is that nice girl you used to bring here?, she would ask, not remembering even the days that we had shared, which were already lost, somewhere in time, somewhere in truth. And so here was death, before me, laughing, his scythe glittering underneath the stars.

And yet. I also felt the sweetest happiness I have ever known. Those long days spent holding her hand. I could feel her bones turning to dust in my fingers. Her heartbeat barely drummed through the paper of her wrist. The fragility of all worlds threatened to upend me. And yet, somehow, those days, those days. What Id give for just one more. Because those days, touched by sorrow, aching with grace, were the most beautiful of all. We knew one another at last, the truth and longing in one another. Just a man holding his mothers hand while the stars fell.

What else is there?

And so. Perhaps, if you examine it, you will learn what I learned. Your happiest moments, like mine, also contain your greatest grief. Your most bitter heartbreak, like mine, holds your truest laughter. Just go into it and ask yourself what you really feel.

We chase emotions as mutually exclusive experiences: happiness or sadness, which cannot coexist. Ah, but we are only denying life this way, and in that denial, the pursuit itself becomes futile, because we are chasing a holy grail now, magic, salvation, not life, humble and true, which we can be genuinely grateful for. There is no such thing as a single, isolated emotion, anymore than there i...

Even the technology writer for the Wall Street Journal has not just curbed his enthusiasm, he's now speaking in the same dark tones as other critics: ...

As America Gives Thanks, Homelessness Continues To Set New Records In Major Cities All Over The Nation "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

If the economy is doing just fine, then why is homelessness at levels not seen since the Great Depression in major cities all over the country?  If the U.S. economy was actually in good shape, we would expect that the number of people that are homeless would be going down or at least stabilizing.  Instead, we have a growing national crisis on our hands.  In fact, within the past two years at least 10 cities or municipal regions in California, Oregon and Washington have declared a state of emergency because the number of homeless is growing so rapidly.

Things are particularly bad in southern California, and this year the Midnight Mission will literally be feeding a small army of people that have nowhere to sleep at night

Thanksgiving meals will be served to thousands of homeless and near-homeless individuals today on Skid Row and in Pasadena and Canoga Park amid calls for donations and volunteers for the rest of the year.

The Midnight Mission will serve Thanksgiving brunch to nearly 2,500 homeless and near-homeless men, women and children, according to Georgia Berkovich, its director of public affairs.

Overall, the Midnight Mission serves more than a million meals a year, and Berkovich says that homelessness hasnt been this bad in southern California since the Great Depression

Schmidt: Google will de-rank RT articles to make them harder to find..hes actually admitting to Orwellian censorship "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

https://www.rt.com/news/410444-google-alphabet-derank-rt/

Eric Schmidt, the Executive Chairman of Googles parent company Alphabet, says the company will engineer specific algorithms for RT and Sputnik to make their articles less prominent on the search engines news delivery services.

We are working on detecting and de-ranking those kinds of sites its basically RT and Sputnik, Schmidt said during a Q & A session at the Halifax International Security Forum in Canada on Saturday, when asked about whether Google facilitates Russian propaganda.

We are well of aware of it, and we are trying to engineer the systems to prevent that [the content being delivered to wide audiences]. But we dont want to ban the sites thats not how we operate.

The discussion focused on the companys popular Google News service, which clusters the news by stories, then ranks the various media outlets depending on their reach, article length and veracity, and Google Alerts, which proactively informs subscribers of new publications.

RT has criticized the proposed move whose timescale has not been publicized as arbitrary and a form of censorship.

Good to have Google on record as defying all logic and reason: facts arent allowed if they come from RT, because Russia even if we have Google on Congressional record saying theyve found no manipulation of their platform or policy violations by RT, Sputnik and RT Editor-in-Chief Margarita Simonyan said in a statement.

During the discussion, Schmidt claimed that he was very strongly not in favor of censorship, but said that he has faith in ranking without acknowledging if the system might serve the same function. Schmidt, who joined Google in 2001, said that the companys algorithm was capable of detecting repetitive, exploitative, false, and weaponizedinfo, but did not elaborate on how these qualities were determined.

The Alphabet chief, who has been referred to by Hillary Clinton as a longtime friend, added that the experience of the last year showed that audiences could not be tru...

The huge changes will involve the removal of school subjects from the curriculum.

A revolution is coming for schools in Finland in the form of a destruction of all formal school subjects.

The head of the Department of Education in Helsinki, Marjo Kyllonen, has announced that he believes that the way children are taught now is based of a style that was a benefit to students in the beginnings of the 1900s, but now is no longer relevant and beneficial to our modernised way of learning. He strongly believes that our needs have changed and so we need to adapt our teachings to match with our new way of thinking and developing.

The huge changes will involve the removal of school subjects from the curriculum, as proposed by Finnish officials, which will be replaced by the study of individual events and phenomena....

Chinas new 7680mph hypersonic nuclear strike aircraft Dragon "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

https://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/world-news/659666/China-Hypersonic-Nuclear-Missile-Dragon-DF-ZF-War-US-Wind-Tunnel-JF12-Picture-Video-Russia

Pictures have emerged of the Dragon under development in a propaganda documentary produced by the Communist Party.

Chinese scientists are said to be using a newly constructed wind tunnel to test the Dragon.

US spooks have previously revealed China is developing high-tech nuclear aircraft which they have codenamed the DF-ZF.

It is believed the aircraft as already been tested seven times.

Images shown in the documentary broadcast last month allege to show a mock-up of the spearhead-looking vehicle being tested.

The Dragon is said to be capable of evading any missile defence system employed by the West.

Scientists have designed the aircraft known as a hypersonic glide vehicle to sit atop a missile.

It would replace conventional warheads and would be able to independently fly evading enemy defences.

This summer, the US also tested is own hypers...

The Digital Revolution Has Empowered Central Banks "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

By: Brendan Brown
digital.PNG

We wont know till the end of this cycle how much mal-investment has occurred under the great monetary inflation which started in 2010. We may already suspect, though, that much of this will be in big tech and related fields. Any final reckoning should also include wider political and socio-economic damage not included in a narrow economic calculus.

Scott Galloway describes skilfully and colourfully the power of the big tech narrative in his just published and highly readable book The Four: the hidden DNA of Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Google. The general critic would take issue with his repeated use of a four-letter expletive. The monetary critic can point to a bigger problem with the book a lack of any analysis linking the amazing spread of the big tech narrative to the prevailing monetary disorder.

If central banks had not created a famine of interest income, the big four would surely not have enthralled investor audiences to anything like the actual extent. Hunger for yield means that investors become willing to take on bad bets (actuarial value highly negative but some possibility of a big pay-off) rather than suffer certain loss on monetary assets. This is an example of loss aversion as diagnosed in the pioneering work on mental flaws of investors by Daniel Kahneman and now prominent in behavioural finance theory.

A hypothesis not yet explored in that literature, but which seems to fit the spread of asset price inflation in present and previous episodes, is that investors do not like to admit to themselves that they are taking on bad bets. They turn bad into good by awarding irrationally high probability of truth to speculative stories which accompany the wagers. The positive feedback loops from initial capital gains add to their complacency with the metamorphosis.

Consistent with that hypothesis Galloway identifies the success of the Big Four in being able to attract cheap capital by articulating a bold vision that is easy to understand.

For Amazon the story is Earths Biggest Store: the strategy huge investment in consumer benefits that stand the test of time lower cost, greater selection and faster delivery. Googles vision is organizing the worlds information; the strategy with a compelling reason for investors to buy its stock, Google has more money to invest in engineers than any media company in history. Facebooks vision: Connecting the world. And as to Apple, who you really are has become what you text on.

As Galloway puts it:

The strength of v...

The Chancellor has coped with a huge economic downgrade, but the outlook is grim for families across Britain "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

For his first Autumn Budget, the Office for Budget Responsibility has given Philip Hammond a truly catastrophic set of economic forecasts. After a decade of unrealised productivity forecasts, the OBR has now delivered the mother of all downgrades; all but halving its view of the UKs capacity to grow. As a result it now expects the economy to grow by an average of just 1.4 per cent a year over the coming five years, leaving our economy 2 per cent smaller in 2022 than it previously expected.

Lower productivity growth drives borrowing up 91 billion over the forecast period. Even with some compensatory changes on employment, the OBR has told the Chancellor that forecast changes mean he should expect to be borrowing 13.7 billion more in 2020-21. In the face of those downgrades the Chancellor has decided not only to accept the lost ground, but to actually further increase borrowing.

As a result, the ambition to see significant reductions in public sector net debt has also gone out the window. It is now forecast to remain around 80 per cent of GDP through to the end of the forecast period. We appear to have a new normal for government debt that runs at precisely double the pre-crisis level of 40 per cent. And even those debt levels are dependent on avoiding another downturn, which history teaches us is unlikely.

Significant as these fiscal downgrades are, they still leave the Chancellor with 14.8 billion headroom against his fiscal target for cyclically adjusted borrowing to be below 2 per cent of GDP in 2020-21.

That headroom is however only being bought by an ongoing programme of austerity. Real spending per person is set to be 1.4 per cent lower in 2022-23 than in 2008-09, an unprecedented stagnation. Within those totals capital spending by government departments is set to increase significantly in the years ahead, while day-to-day resource spending per person now looks set to fall by a further 4 per cent by 2022-23. That includes a penciled in, but unallocated, 4.7 billion additional cut announced yesterday.

While the outlook for the public finances is bad, it is not quite as bad as some were expecting. Unfortunately, the future for family finances implied by yesterdays forecasts is unremittingly grim. Lower productivity feeds through directly to pay, which is now forecast to be 1,000 a year lower on average than the OBR thought back in March. We project that this would mean average pay not recovering to its pre-crisis peak until 2025 17 years after the pay squeeze began.

The pay downgrade feeds through into weak projections for family incomes. Disposable income per person is now set to be 540 lower by 2022 than previously expected, with the current fall in real incomes set to continue and to become the longest on record. Indeed the OBR projects that the current period of falling incomes will l...

Thanksgiving: A Celebration of Domestic Life "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

By: Ryan McMaken
thanksgiving.PNG

If recent years are any indication, this year we'll be treated, yet again, to a smattering of articles about the supposed politics behind Thanksgiving, and how the bad guys (whether on the left or right) are opposing all things decent by refusing to celebrate the holiday in a way that promotes the correct political agenda. On one side are the leftists who feel compelled to use Thanksgiving as an extension of Columbus Day, in which we're all reminded that it's a bad thing to steal from indigenous tribes. One the other side are the conservatives who insist on making Thanksgiving into a day celebrating a national origin story. July 4, it seems, isn't enough for them.

Unfortunately, both of these efforts at hijacking the holiday for political battles refuse to go away. Fortunately, it appears that the vast majority of Americans don't care, and most plan to enjoy the holiday in the way it has been enjoyed for about 150 years: as a celebration on domestic life and economic prosperity.

The Evolution of Thanksgiving

As a holiday, Thanksgiving has gone through several different forms. As described in James Baker's study of the holiday, Thanksgiving: The Biography of An American Holiday, there had been a variety of Thanksgiving traditions practiced throughout the US, but few of them closely resembled the Thanksgiving we now know today.

Moreover, the activities people adopted to commemorate the holiday changed significantly over time. According to Baker, in the holiday's early years, it served as "the Puritan stand-in for Christmas (a holiday they rejected as noncanonical and pagan), an early winter time for feasting and pious hope before the long, dreary months of cold and privation to follow."

While a large meal was often had at the celebration, the holiday was mostly religious in character. The "highlight" of the day was a long, stern sermon, presumably from a Calvinist clergyman.

The holiday had long been celebrated in New England and other regions as a sort of harvest festival, but it d...

The Autumn Budget 2017 brings worse than hoped for news for the low paid "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

or many people, the big news out of Novembers Budget a massive downgrade in the outlook for productivity growth will sound a bit abstract. The productivity downgrade has made the Chancellors task of balancing the books harder. But its impact on pay with average annual earnings lowered by 1,000 mean its even more daunting for families in terms of balancing household budgets. And thats especially true for Britains lowest earners.

For workers on the minimum wage, the past two years have brought strong real-terms wage growth. The National Living Wage (NLW) the higher minimum wage for those aged 25+ has taken the wage floor from 6.50 an hour in April 2015 to 7.50 today. The Chancellor today announced it would increase next year to 7.83 a healthy 4.4 per cent wage rise.

But ongoing weakness in overall pay is dampening the good news for those on the minimum wage. Two years ago, the NLW was expected to be 8.20 in April 2018 37p higher than the figure announced today.

Looking further ahead, George Osbornes expectation of a 9 minimum wage by 2020 looks set to be delayed by two years, with the NLW only reaching that level in 2022. Incredibly, the NLW in 2020 is course to be 74p an hour lower than forecast two years ago and thats before you account for higher inflation eroding its value even further.

So what explains this fall? Unlike the minimum wage which was set every year based on negotiations among representatives from employers, employees and academia on Low Pay Commission the NLW employs a far more mechanistic approach.

Putting those figures into pounds and pence, our analysis using todays figures show that the pre-tax pay of a NLW earner working full-time will be over 1,400 a year lower in 2020 than originally forecast when it was announced in 2015.

Some might argue that the Chancellor should plough on with the 9 target regardless. But that would be a huge gamble considering the NLW is already a serious ratcheting up of ambition for the UKs wage floor. So far the National Living Wage has been a huge success, dispelling a lot of the warnings about job losses that greeted its...

Iran, Russia, Turkey to call for intl conference on Syria "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

Rouhani, Putin and Erdogan say the end of the war in Syria is at hand [PPIO]

The Presidents of Iran, Russia and Turkey have concluded a tripartite summit on Syria in Sochi and say there is a real chance for peace now that the Islamic State has been largely defeated.

With IS forces routed in Syria (and Iraq), a cessation of hostilities in full effect, and hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees returning home, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that there is a real chance a political settlement will end the seven-year civil war.

It can be stated with certainty that we have reached a new stage that opens the door to a real political settlement process, he said.

The three leaders meeting in Sochi said the momentum was now such that they would sponsor an international conference involving all conflict parties to bring the war to an end.

In their joint statement issued at the end of their summit, the three leaders said they would:

assist the Syrians in restoring unity of the country, and achieving political solution of the crisis through an inclusive, free, fair and transparent Syrian-led and Syrian-owned process leading to constitution enjoying the support of the Syrian people and free and fair elections with the participation of all eligible Syrians under appropriate United Nations supervision.

Syrian President Bashar Al Assad was in Sochi earlier this week and agreed to the political reforms that Russia has proposed to move the peace settlement ahead.

But Putin warned that the reforms would not be easy and would require compromise and concessions from all parties to the conflict.

In previous years, Saudi Arabia which has backed the mostly Islamist rebel factions against Assad had ruled out a future role for the Syrian president.

But after a number of meetings between Putin and Saudi leaders, they appear to have backed away from that demand.

The US also appears to have softened its anti-Assad position in the post-conflict period.

Meanwhile, Syrian opposition groups which have been involved in previous UN-sponsored negotiations, but are deeply fragmented met in Saudi Arabia yesterday to unify their position ahead another round of talks in Geneva.

Iran, Russia and Turkey have said that no members of the Al Nusra, Al Qaeda or Islamic State terrorist groups will be part of the talks.

The Life and Death of an Economy "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

How Economies Commit Suicide, Starring America and Britain as Romeo and Juliet

I want to tell you a story of economics, love, and death. Kind of a Romeo and Juliet parable for the modern age, where the protagonist are societies, not people, who made a kind of suicide pact.

Today, the UKwell get to the US, the world, and the future, but lets begin herereleased some genuinely stunning economic numbers. It forecast the economy basically never to grow again, and for incomes not to rise to 2008 levels until 2028. But of course the contradiction is that if the economy will never grow again, then incomes are hardly likely to rise, so we are seeing the death of a modern economy. But it isnt the first, it is the second: the first death was the USA, which is now something like a post-economic country, nominally rich, but plagued by things like mass school shooting and medical bankruptcies, which dont even happen really in Delhi or Bangkok.

Two deaths. Are they homicides? Lets think about it.

In 2007, the greatest financial crisis of of the modern age hit like a tsunami. What was the response from the UK? Well, it was to bail out the banks with public money. Of course, that raised levels of debt. Now, that was no big deal: governments can always print money, and during times of extreme crisis, whether famine or financial, they should. Furthermore, national debt is not the sum of your debt and my debt, and it has no real bearing on our live whatsoever: just as you can happily carry a credit card balance forever, and many people do, so prosperous nations can bear debt, and the strength of a nation is precisely to be able to do so.

But the average person was tricked into believing the very opposite. They came to think, through sophistry masquerading as economics and punditry disguising itself as analysis and sheer propaganda that there was no way out of this mess except to rip the heart out of public life, to pay off the debt incurred by bailing out the banks by cutting public goods and services. Thus public goodsthe NHS, BBC, transport, education, and so onwere eviscerated to pay off private debts, and even that is an understatement: the moneys spent went of course to lavish compensation packages and grand accoutrements, not really to paying off debt, which is still high, and still doesnt matter a whit to the average person.

Perma austerity killed the UK economy, by producing perma stagnation. And then came Brexit. Brexit was another misguided, maleducated response: since the UK needed to save money to pay off its debt the average Brit was again conned into believing that the next great cost, after public goods, was EU membership. Youll save millions a week! the propaganda went....

An example is a 30-year-old saving vs. a 60-year-old. For the older person, time itself becomes more valuable.

A smart, young person who saves can create more value from their time since they have more of it.

You have a tough question to ask: is your life in line with your values?

Every person reading this is at a different stage in life.

For me personally, I am a father to three children, I have a 3yr, 6yr, and 8yr old. This is by far the most important role and responsibility in my life.

It makes me a little sad that the 8yr old is getting so big. I cant imagine Ill be holding him or putting him on my shoulders for too much longer.

We face this in all relationships, but for the most part, we dont think about it.

There is always going to be a last time

The last time you see a parent The last time you hold a childs hand across the street Even a last time you laugh with a loved one.

This life is finite, and the time we have and the relationships we value deserve our attention.

Its why I personally feel that the choice to become financially independent is a great virtue that should be praised often.

You should be enjoying your time, the true fruits of our labor.

Best Regards,

Further thoughts on why the end of net neutrality will be fine "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

If a cable company really is a monopolist, still they (mostly) maximize profit by giving customers (cost-constrained) what they want.  When the de Beers cartel had a monopoly on diamonds, did they also make you buy their favorite soda brand?  No, that would lower the overall value of the package and thus lower profits.

Restore the Federal Trade Commissions ability to protect consumers online from any unfair, deceptive, and anticompetitive practices without burdensome regulations, achieving comparable benefits at lower cost.

In the current debate, there is a common presumption that paying for slots hurts the little guy.  During the payola debates for radio, it turned out that payola favored the independent labels over the majors; see my book In Praise of Commercial Culture.  It doesnt have to work out that way, but refusing to price scarce resources often helps the big established players, who can invest $$ to get what they want through bigger brand names or other means.   Note:

Pai says that one of the major mistakes of Net Neutrality is its pre-emptive nature. Rather than allowing different practices to develop and then having regulators intervene when problems or harms to customer arise, Net Neutrality is prescriptive and thus likely to serve the interests of existing companies in maintaining a status quo thats good for them.

Furthermore, are there external benefits from small web upstarts?  Or are the external benefits from the big superstar internet companies?  If you are a Progressive who loves stable jobs and decent wages, you might think the more significant externali...

134 Earthquakes Strike The San Andreas Fault As The Shaking Of The Earths Crust Intensifies "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

Within the last 7 days, 134 earthquakes have hammered a three-mile stretch around Monterey County on the San Andreas fault.  17 of those earthquakes were of magnitude 2.5 or greater, and many believe that these quakes could be a warning sign that a much bigger quake is imminent.  Lets hope not, because when the Big One finally strikes California we will witness devastation on a scale that is unlike anything that we have seen before in modern American history.  The Northridge earthquake of 1994 was crippling, but it was only a magnitude 6.7 quake.  Experts tell us that when the Big One finally hits, we could be looking at a quake of magnitude 9.0 or greater, and such a disaster would make the Northridge earthquake look like a Sunday picnic.

The San Andreas fault stretches for more than 700 miles along the California coast, and in a previous article I discussed how seismologists have warned that it could potentially unzip all at once.  There is a reason why it is one of the most famous earthquake faults in the entire world, and all of the shaking that we have seen over the past 7 days has many scientists deeply concerned

In the last week 134 earthquakes have hammered a three-mile stretch around Monterey County on the San Andreas fault.

Of those earthquakes, 17 were stronger than 2.5 magnitude and six of them were stronger than 3.0, with more tremors expected in the coming weeks, experts warn...

Thanksgiving 2017: 21 Things I'm Grateful For "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

The realm of gratitude is boundless.
In the spirit of Thanksgiving, here are 21 things I'm grateful for. This is a semi-random list drawn from the many things I'm grateful for, the most important of which are: after 48 years of work I still have my health and more work than I know what to do with; good friends; family; freedom, enough good luck that a few of the many stupidly high-risk bets I've made throughout my adult life paid off, and I have a garden and a library. ("The man who has a garden and a library has everything." Cicero)
We all have our lists; here's mine, in no particular order:
1. Dirt (if you like to eat, start by liking dirt)
2. Rain (dirt + rain + seeds + care = food)
3. Our home garden

A Message from The Event Chronicle "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

Dear Event Chronicle Family,

Many of you have emailed to ask about my extended absence from our website. Id like to take a moment to share with you as to why there have been no recent updates on The Event Chronicle.

Some of you might remember me talking about my Grandpa from time to time on Facebook.

My Grandpa was born in 1923 and passed at the age of 94 this month, three months shy of his 95th birthday. Grandpa lived through the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl, the Second World War, and was a farmer in North Dakota until the late 1940s when he moved to Washington State to build a better life for his young family. He began work as a technician at a local family dairy where he processed and bottled milk for 36 years. When he retired, the dairy closed because they could not find anyone who knew the old ways. He always had interesting tales to tell and loved to talk about his early years on the farm.

On the Family Farm, 1944

Grandpa was admitted to the hospice center earlier this month. I sat with him every day for a week until he passed. I was heartbroken for him when he developed ...

Europe to become the cash cow for the Green religion "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-42004328

French president Emmanuel Macron says that Europe will cover any shortfall in funding for the global climate body, the IPCC.

The scientific organisation has faced uncertainty since President Donald Trump outlined plans earlier this year to cut US funding.

The UK government also pledged to double their IPCC contribution.

Speaking at UN talks in Bonn, Mr Macron said that climate change was the most significant struggle of our times.

Today saw the start of the high level segment at this meeting of global climate negotiators known as COP23.

In his statement to negotiators, the French president outlined the need for increased commitments to cut carbon.

Mr Macron said these decisions must be based on clear scientific information.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has long been seen as a key element of that system of advice...

Lebanese Army placed at full readiness to counter Israeli enemy "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

https://www.rt.com/news/410471-lebanon-readiness-border-israel/

The head of the Lebanese Army has asked the military to be at full readiness to face the Israeli enemy at the southern border. The announcement comes as Arab nations, including Saudi Arabia, vow to tighten their grip on Lebanons Hezbollah militia.

The army needs to be prepared to confront the threats and violations of the Israeli enemy and its hostile intentions against Lebanon, Joseph Aoun said on Tuesday. He also urged the army to cooperate with United Nations forces in Lebanon under UN Security Council Resolution 1701, adopted to resolve the 2006 Israel-Lebanon conflict.

The statement comes after Lebanese President Michel Aoun said that Israeli targeting still continues and it is the right of the Lebanese to resist it and foil its plans by all available means, according to Reuters.

President Aouns remarks were echoed by Lebanese Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil, who also cautioned Tel Aviv against sparking a war. Lebanon is ready to act, but will do its utmost to prevent Israel from an invasion, he told RT last week. We should restrain Israel from starting a war exactly because Lebanon is sure to win it, he said.
Lebanon is undergoing a deep political crisis after its Prime Minister Saad Hariri abruptly resigned on November 4 in a televised statement from Saudi Arabia. In his resignation address, Hariri accused Iran and Shiite Hezbollah militia of sowing strife in Arab countries.

The Arab League called an emergency meeting in Cairo on Sunday, blaming Iran for destabilizing the region. The alliance also described Hezbollah as a terrorist organization, but stopped just short of threatening any action against either. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, the Arab Leagues secretary-general, said its members may reach out to the UN Security Council to discuss possible steps against the Islamic republic.

In perhaps the most intrusive move of social media platforms efforts signal as much virtue as possible and appease their potentially-regulating government overlords, Twitter has announced that it is cracking down on what it defines at hate-speech and not just by looking at its own site.

In what amounts to a major shift in Twitter policy, Mashables Kerry Flynn reports that the company announced on Friday that it will be monitoring users behavior on and off the platform and will suspend a users account if they affiliate with violent organizations, according to an update to Twitters Help Center on Friday.
