Dear Bashar al-Assad Apologists,
Sorry to interrupt: I know youre very busy right now trying to convince yourselves, and the rest of us, that your hero couldnt possibly have used chemical weapons to kill up to 70 people in rebel-held Douma on April 7. Maybe Robert Fisks mysterious doctor has it right and maybe the hundreds of survivors and eyewitnesses to the attack are all crisis actors.
Maybe Assad didnt use sarin to kill around 100 people in rebel-held Khan Shaykhoun a year ago either. A joint investigation by the United Nations and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons found unmistakable evidence that he did. Human Rights Watch and Hans Blix also agree that Assad was probably to blame. But maybe theyre all wrong. Or maybe theyre paid shills for the CIA.
My point is this: Who cares? Seriously, who cares? Whether or not it was Assad who used chemical weapons in Syria earlier this month, or last year, might matter to the leaders of the U.S., the U.K. and France who decided to launch brazenly illegal and rather pointless air strikes against his regime, but it doesnt change the fact that the Syrian president-for-life is a monster who has perpetrated a vast array of blatant human rights abuses, crimes against humanity, and war crimes.
Now, I totally understand why those of you on the...

Via Fox News: A writer for The Late Show With Stephen Colbert has found herself in hot water over a tweet she wrote about the death of former first lady Barbara Bush. RIP Barbara Bush, the only woman who was 92 for 30 years, Jen Spyra tweeted shortly after news broke of Bushs passing. Spyra
Sometimes things break and they dont get fixed, and thats what has had me worried of late. We have an incredibly resilient system of government, and my admiration has grown as Ive seen it weather one brutal test and assault after another, starting with the effort to impeach Bill Clinton and following on with a series of almost ridiculous disasters that included the botched and stolen election of 2000, the 9/11 attacks, the decision to invade and occupy Afghanistan and Iraq, the complete meltdown of the housing market and ensuing global recession, and most recently the catastrophic election of Donald Trump with the connivance and assistance of Vladimir Putin.
Maybe our parents did something to make us deserve this. Maybe were all to blame, too. But I wont stand for it. Im not going to sit back and take these punches like Ive somehow got it coming. And all Ive really had to sustain me in these fights is the belief that our system can survive this and figure it all out and eventually get a measure of justice.
Sometimes I feel feel vindicated in that belief and other times I grow concerned that were not up to the task. It can sometimes feel like Ill spend my whole life waiting for the chickens to come home to roost on the bastards who have been fucking up our lives.
But its been a good week. The last ten days or so have really stood out.
To put it bluntly, the president is completely screwed six ways to Sunday, and all thats left is to wait for this to play out and get our goblets ready to drink the tears. Anyone who knows anything about Michael Cohen understands this already, and the rest of the people will eventually catch up.
My best guess is that Sean Hannity is finished as well although that, too, will not likely become clear for some time. All I know is that they were desperate enough to keep a lid on his conversations with Cohen to pretend he was a client and to put his name out there as if he has a right to have those conversations kept privileged. There was no other reason to list him as a client in the first place and no reason to volunteer his name in open court when the judge was offering to let them give her a sealed envelope.
Kris Kobach is also screwed. Hes just been held in contempt of court for defying court orders related to Kansass voter identification laws. And thats not a good look for a Secretary of State, nor for a candidate for U.S. Senate, nor for the person whom President Trump put in charge of getting to the bottom of our non-existent problem with in-person voter fraud.
Republicans are beginning to have their fantasies hit up against a wall of...
None of us are perfect parents and none of us have perfect kids. We cant take credit for all their successes and we generally cant be blamed for all their failures. But we do play a large role is shaping our children, and we can screw them up pretty good if were not careful. George W. Bush was screwed up by his parents. Some of it wasnt anything they could control. Its not easy to be the grandson of a senator and the son of a president, especially if you arent blessed at birth with the same types of skills that made them successful in business and politics. Many of us in the same situation would follow an initial path similar to Dubyas: being the class clown, not trying too hard lest we fail, taking the easy road and riding on our privilege. Ive never blamed George W. for being the way he is, only for having the lack of judgment and humility to realize that he wasnt suited to life of public service.
With the passing of Barbara Bush, the nation is going through the ritual of praising all her virtues and accomplishments while ignoring completely her faults and shortcomings. Thats largely as it should be. Basic politeness and a healthy respect for our institutions requires that we focus on the positive when a First Lady passes on. But this custom is no friend of the truth.
Barbara Bush was extremely hard on her children, especially George who seems to have been a big disappointment to her. I had to cringe when I saw that she told the doctor on her death bed that George turned out the way he did because she smoked and drank while she was pregnant. The former president told the story in a lighthearted manner, suggesting that she was always making jokes like that. And thats exactly the problem. Thats about the most vicious thing she could have said about her son as she was dying. Its the kind of joke that has too much sincerity behind it to be funny. Why not say, instead, that she was proud of him and that he exceeded all her expectations? He was, after all, elected as governor of Texas and to two terms as president of the United States. Is that not enough for a mother, even if he was perhaps not a good president in the end?
This is how she damaged her son, and were all guilty of doing this to some degree or another with our children. But the world doesnt suffer for it the way it did from the presidency of George W. Bush.
I like to allow a little time before I speak ill of the dead, which is why I held my tongue for a bit about Barbara Bush. As hard as it is for me to take, I recognize the value of treating our leaders and their families with a bit of deference and a sometimes undeserved default level of respect, so I can abide the tongue-bath the medi...
Last November, I wrote The Odd Chabad Connection Between Putin and Trump and its time to revisit the piece in light of recent events. Presumably youve seen the hilarious video of Michael Cohen smoking cigars with sketchy looking gangster types that was set to the theme song of The Sopranos.
omg this is amazing pic.twitter.com/TOlAIKvPl5
Josh Marshall (@joshtpm) April 14, 2018
While that video is funny, its also real. The man in the blue suit is Rotem Rosen, who was the main character in my November piece. While Cohen and Rosen were commiserating over cigars, Cohen was supposed to be in court. Judge Kimba Wood was reportedly displeased by his absence.
On an obvious level, it should surprise no one that Rosen and Cohen are friends. Both of them are honorary members of the Trump family. But, on a different level, the media really should be reporting on the significance of this relationship.
I am going to cite from my previous article on this rather than write it all out again, but you should also reference this article from Ben Schreckinger on how Putin enlisted two Jewish oligarchs back in 1999 to help him build up his political power.
Lets begin here:
Starting in 1999, [Vladimir] Putin enlisted two of his closest confidants, the oligarchs Lev Leviev and Roman Abramovich, who would go on to become Chabads biggest patrons worldwide, to create the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia under the leadership of Chabad rabbi Berel Lazar, who would come to be known as Putins rabbi.
Theres a good chance that if you know of Roman Abramovich, you know him as the owner of the Chelsea Football Club of the English Premier League. You may not know that he was a......
This should come as no surprise:
A new poll released by NPR, PBS NewsHour and Marist University shows that about 3-in-10 Americans think that the FBI is biased against the Trump administrationSixty-one percent of Americans think that the FBI is just doing its job.
While the number of Americans who distrust the FBIs motives is growing, Im actually comforted that the number isnt higher. After all, the FBI has been under sustained tribal attack from the president, Republicans in Congress, and the organs of the mighty right-wing media wurlitzer. The thirty-one percent number is close enough to the Alan Keyes Constant that its within the margin of error. In other words, under normal circumstances, the percentage of FBI skeptics in the population is about as low as you can reasonably expect it to go in any situation where the FBI is under attack from the right.
In a way, it seems obvious that a decent chunk of the electorate will ascribe bias to anyone who criticizes the president they support, especially if that president is constantly calling the whole thing a witch hunt and effort to delegitimize his election. When that view is amplified in peoples news feeds and on the television programs they watch, its hard to see how wed ever get a lower number than thirty-one percent in our present circumstances.
Whats a sign of corrosion in our democracy is not the absolute percentage of FBI skeptics, but the fact that the FBI is under attack at all. When the FBI deserves criticism, they should receive it. Thats how our system self-corrects. But when they try to protect the country from foreign interference in our elections and are called biased for their efforts, thats a problem. Its a problem because its not something they can correct without surrendering to that foreign power.
Now, James Comey isnt helping things by going out and doing more than a dozen media appearances where he expresses his disdain for Donald Trumps character, appearance, and fitness for office. That doesnt make him look like a neutral or dispassionate observer or strengthen him as an objective witness of fact. When he basically says that the election of Trump made him nauseated, that weakens his standing as someone who stands above and o...
There will be a hearing today in Manhattan to discuss what will be done with the materials the government seized from Michael Cohen last week. It will probably be the most significant event in a U.S. District Court since James McCord sent his letter to Judge John Sirica on March 19, 1973. After that letter, it was only a matter of time before the ugly truths behind the Watergate break-in became known to investigators and the public.
President Trump knows the government probably now has possession of enough incriminating material to end his presidency and land him in prison for the remainder of his days, so the only remaining option is to fight to prevent the government from reading what they have. Judge Kimba Wood will decide if that is the correct way to deal with this mess. I dont think she will rule with the president.
Whats being debated is who gets to review the material seized from Cohens home, office and hotel room one week ago. After learning that the government planned to have a taint team start reviewing the material it had seized from Cohen last Friday, Cohens legal team filed a motion for a temporary restraining order on Thursday night. In short, they want to have the determination of what is or isnt privileged made not by government officials but by themselves or, at least, by a third party called a special master
Trumps team wants Cohens team to review the seized material and then to get a copy of the material related to the president. In court on Friday, Trumps attorneys seemed content to have a third-party review the material to determine what might or might not be privileged. In a letter filed with the court on Sunday night, though, Trumps position was that the only acceptable way of evaluating what was or wasnt privileged was to turn the material over to Cohens team to make that assessment.
The president has characterized the warrants that were issued to seize Cohens record as a violation of attorney-client privilege, but the government...
If Michael Cohen went to Prague, then Donald Trump will be impeached, convicted, and removed from office, assuming he doesnt resign. Digby says it is the whole enchilada, and shes right. But Adam Davidson may be right that scrutiny of Cohens business records are going to be sufficient on their own, regardless of what can proven about the Prague trip.
For starters, reporters Peter Stone and Greg Gordon of McClatchy set the world on fire (for those in the know) with their Thursday evening article that revealed that Mueller has evidence Cohen was in Prague in 2016.
The Justice Department special counsel has evidence that Donald Trumps personal lawyer and confidant, Michael Cohen, secretly made a late-summer trip to Prague during the 2016 presidential campaign, according to two sources familiar with the matter
investigators have traced evidence that Cohen entered the Czech Republic through Germany, apparently during August or early September of 2016 as the ex-spy reported, said the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is confidential.
Now, these two anonymous sources could be wrong but given the stakes, there is no way McClatchy would make such an explosive charge if they werent extremely confident that their sources are in a position to know and have no plausible reason to mislead them.
Michael Cohen still denies that he traveled to Prague in 2016, or ever.
Bad reporting, bad information and bad story by same reporter Peter Stone @McClatchyDC. No matter how many times or ways they write it, I have never been to Prague. I was in LA with my son. Proven! https://t.co/ra7nwjUA0X

President Trump doesnt know or care about the facts of the case, but he heard that Scooter Libby got screwed so he issued him a pardon. At least, thats what just happened if you believe the president.
President Trump on Friday issued a pardon to Lewis Scooter Libby, a former chief of staff to Vice President Richard B. Cheney who was convicted of perjury and obstruction of justice in connection with the leak of a CIA officers identity.
I dont know Mr. Libby, Trump said in a statement, but for years I have heard that he has been treated unfairly. Hopefully, this full pardon will help rectify a very sad portion of his life.
There are a lot of possible ways to interpret both this pardon and the particular timing involved. It could be based mainly on the fact that Scooter Libby was and is represented by Victoria Toensing and Trump has been meeting with her and her husband Joe DiGenova lately, even briefly considering bringing them on as part of his defense team until they all realized that they the two lawyers had a conflict of interest.
Or it could be a way to send a message to anyone who is thinking of cutting a deal with Robert Mueller that if they will just hold out the president will take care of them, even if they lie to a grand jury and obstruct justice.
Whether intentional or not, the move is a giant middle finger to the intelligence community, and that could be part of the point here, too. The prosecutor who investigated the Valerie Plame Wilson case, Patrick Fitzgerald, is reportedly a close personal friend of James Comey.
If you look at a close-up of chief of staff John Kelly, you can see why the White House decided to take down the presidents tweet.
Presumably, Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa is explaining some basic concepts of his states economy and their farmers reliance on exports to China that would be negatively impacted in a trade war. Whatever the specifics, Kelly is cringing because its painful when an adult needs to be addressed like a first grader and that adult is the president of the United States and your boss.
Its possible that this picture was not released by accident at all, but as evidence of the kind of disrespect Kelly shows the president in settings like this, which would certainly justify his termination as chief of staff. Did the White House already know that Kelly would be cited in James Comeys book as saying that Trump and his advisors were dishonorable people for firing Comey the way they did? Did they know that Kelly told Comey that he intended to resign from the job he then held as Secretary of Homeland Security before Comey asked him t...
I need to get my peepers checked and a new prescription because the eye strain headache I have right now is on almost a migraine level. So, this post will be shorter than it would otherwise be. There is someone who was just convicted of 23 felonies, including charges of mail fraud, wire fraud, money laundering and violations of federal election law. He also misused charities and fraudulently misled donors. He used the money to finance personal purchases and well as to pay for political dirty tricks. Hes going to jail pending sentencing because hes a flight risk.
Somewhat shockingly, this person is neither Michael Cohen nor Donald Trump. Yes, one or both of them are guilty of all all of the same felonies. But, no, this person is a former congressman from Texas named Steve Stockman.
Stockman will appeal the verdict, but hes up shit creek.
A jury in federal court in Houston ruled Thursday afternoon that Stockman is guilty of all but one of the 24 felonies he was charged with last March. After about 16 hours of deliberations over three days, the 12-person panel only declined to convict on one of four counts of wire fraud
That verdict puts Stockman a firebrand conservative who served two nonconsecutive terms in the U.S. House before losing a 2014 challenge to U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas at risk of decades in federal prison.
I am somewhat surprised at the amount of jail time people like Paul Manafort and Michael Cohen are facing considering that their crimes are white collar, but when you get nailed on more than a dozen counts the jail time quickly adds up to an effective life sentence for a man already past the age of 50.
I doubt Stockman knows anything about Trump that Bob Mueller is interested in, but Manafort and Cohen still have a get out of jail free card if they want to use it. They might not escape jail entirely, but they can avoid effective life sentences. Or they can wait around for Trump to obstruct justice again by pardoning them. But then theyll lose their right to invoke the Fifth Amendment and theyll have to talk.
If youre a Democrat, there is almost no good news in the latest Morning Consult governor and senator Approval Rankings. They can take comfort that it looks like theyll be taking back the governors office in Illinois and that Scott Walker looks like hes in real trouble in Wisconsin. And its always nice to have it confirmed that Mitch McConnell is still the least popular senator in the country. Overall, however, the numbers are somewhere between disappointing to catastrophic.
Ill provide you with the best and worst because thats always interesting, but we will need to dig deeper than that.
Top 5 Senators
Bottom 5 Senators...
Phillip Bump of the Washington Post has a helpful article up that helps us understand the law that established the process for a special counsel, including how a special counsel can and cannot be removed. As part of his analysis, he points at that Congress has at long last decided to add some protections for Robert Mueller so that President Trump will find it more difficult to fire him, but he also warns that even if the law passes and is signed into law by Trump (or Congress overrides his veto), the president can still find ways to obstruct justice.
The action in the Senate is happening initially in that chambers Judiciary Committee which is chaired by Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa. Sen. Grassley is moving a bill that is sponsored by Republican Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina and co-sponsored by Sens. Lindsey Graham, Chris Coons and Cory Booker.
The Posts Karoun Demirjian reports that the bipartisan bill would mandate a 10-day waiting period after an order to fire the special counsel, during which period the firing could be appealed to a panel of three judges and during which time no staff changes could be made to the special counsels team and no documents could be destroyed.
In other words, Trump would not be able to send people in to confiscate Muellers records and his decision to fire him would have to pass muster with the judicial branch of the government. But if Trump were to instead to simply fire Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and replace him with someone else, he could gain control over what Mueller can and cannot do.
As we noted on Tuesday, though, replacing Rosenstein gives Trump another way to interfere with the investigation. Remember: Rosenstein gets final say over prosecutions and areas of investigation. Replacing Rosenstein with someone willing to help derail Mueller would allow Trump to tie Muellers hands. The new deputy attorney general could sim...
Lets do a bit of comparing and contrasting by looking at how President Trump is behaving and then taking a look back at President Nixons last days in office. In our sequel, the role of Henry Kissinger will be played by self-styled Democrat, attorney Alan Dershowitz. John Kelly will be very inadequately play the role of Alexander Haig. They say history doesnt repeat itself but it does rhyme. Let us see.
Inside the White House, Mr. Trump furious after the F.B.I. raided his longtime personal lawyer, Michael D. Cohen spent much of the day brooding and fearful and near what two people close to the West Wing described as a meltdown.
Mr. Trumps mood had begun to sour even before the raids on his lawyer. People close to the White House said that over the weekend, the president engaged in few activities other than dinner at the Trump International Hotel. He tuned into Fox News, they said, watched reports about the so-called deep state looking to sink his presidency and became unglued.
At times in those last few weeks, Nixon brooded in the Lincoln Sitting Room or his secret hideaway office in the Old Executive Office Building across the street from the White House. Even in the White House summer, Nixon would sit in one of the two rooms with a fire burning in the fireplace scribbling memos to himself on his familiar yellow legal padsOften, an aide or valet would find Nixon loudly blaring his favorite music the score from the 1950s documentary Victory at Sea. Other times, Nixon would listen to the tapes from his Oval Office recording system that were bringing his Presidency down around him, rewinding, fast-forwarding, listening again-and-again to his own voice saying the things now coming back to haunt him.
Richard Nixon and Donald Trump are much different people but they share some unfortunate traits in common. One is their tendency to sulk and brood when things are going badly for them. Another thing they seem to share is simmering resentments that get expressed in unhealthy ways, including displays of paranoia.
Mr. Trump angrily told his advisers that people were trying to undermine him and that he wanted to get rid of three top Justice Department officials Jeff Sessions, the attorney general; Rod J. Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general who appointed Mr. Mueller; and Christopher A. Wray, the F.B.I. director according to two people familiar with...
Where to start? The presidents own executive branch of the government has such overwhelming evidence of criminality that they felt compelled to seek and were able to obtain the consent of the judicial branch of the government to raid the office, home, and hotel room of Trumps personal lawyer, Mr. Fix-It and consigliere, Michael Cohen. And part of what they were authorized to seize were communications between Cohen and Trump that would ordinarily be protected by attorney-client privilege. In other words, they had strong evidence that Cohen and Trump have engaged in a criminal conspiracy or conspiracies.
Is that a good beginning?
Needless to say, nothing like this is ever supposed to happen. Under ordinary circumstances, there in no chance in hell that warrants like this would be sought, let alone authorized by a long list of people from the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York (who was appointed by Trump), to the acting head of the Criminal Division of the Justice Department, to the Deputy Attorney General (who was also appointed by Trump), to the U.S. District Court judge. Authorizing raids on the presidents lawyer that seek his presumptively privileged communications is a sure-fire career ender, and anyone in the chain of this process could and would have put an end to the idea if it wasnt on the most irrefutably sound foundation.
That this happened at all isnt just glaring evidence that a huge crime is about to surface but also an indication of just how furious the Justice Department and the FBI is with the behavior and rhetoric of the president. They are not going to tolerate it.
As for the consequences, Michael Cohen is the weak spot in Trumps Death Star. There is probably more evidence of crime in his files than you could find from any other source. The scope of the criminality implicated here is mind-boggling and possibly involves everything from the giant fraud of Trump University to bribes of foreign dignitaries to sophisticated money laundering schemes, to countless payouts for hush money, to a comprehensive list of paramours, to thuggish threats to feed people their own testicles. It also has direct relevance to the Russia investigation on almost every level.
Cohen was negotiating a Moscow Trump Tower with the help of Felix Sater (who is already cooperating) throughout 2015. He carried a message to Michael Flynn on how to implicate the current Ukrainian president in crimes. His brother is married to the daughter of a recently deceased oligarch and he was implicated as the contact with the Rus...

It was late March and Arafat Hasan Riad was entering his seventh day in solitary confinement. Speaking over a fuzzy phone line from a privately run Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center in rural Georgia, the Bangladeshi immigrant was struggling to cope.
Riad explained, in rudimentary English, that his punishment had followed a pay dispute with CoreCivic, the billion-dollar prison corporation that runs the Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, Georgia, where he was being held. The amount in question was $8.
Riads account marks the latest instance in which CoreCivic, formerly known as Corrections Corporation of America, stands accused of using the punishing conditions of solitary confinement to manage its detainee labor program, which pays detainees well below minimum wage for jobs that keep its facilities running.
Other instances of CoreCivic using isolation to punish detainee workers are detailed in a class-action lawsuit filed in Georgia this week, which claims that CoreCivics operations at Stewart amount to a deprivation scheme intended to force detained immigrants to work for nearly free. Punishment, including solitary confinement, is used to ensure work gets done, the suit alleges.
Riad, who is not named in the lawsuit, told The Intercept that he worked as a cook in the detention facilitys kitchen for a wage of 50 cents per hour, and said he was locked in solitary confinement after CoreCivic accused him of dishonestly claiming two days of wages that facility officials said he wasnt owed. (Riad rejects the allegation, arguing that he did work the hours. He did not specifically allege that solitary confinement was used to force him to work.)
Every human needs to talk to somebody else, Riad said. But in segregation, I am only alone.
In 2011, a report by Juan E. Mndez, then the United Nations special rapporteur on torture, found that solitary confinement can lead to irreversible psychological disorders in a matter of just a few days and, as a result, can constitute serious violations of international laws and conventions, including prohibitions against cruel and inhumane punishment and torture.
After just a week in CoreCivics solitary confinement cell, Riad said he was already feeling the effects of isolation. Even one day 24 hours in segregation is very difficult, Riad said. Every human needs to talk to somebody else, he said. But in segregation, I am only alone.
I asked them to go outside I tell them: I feel like Im sick; I have too much headache. I need to go outside in the yard, Ri...

The Wall Street Journal quotes a Trump lawyer
saying that Michael Cohen is likely to flip:
One of President Donald Trumps longtime legal advisers said he warned the president in a phone call Friday that Michael Cohen, Mr. Trumps personal lawyer and close friend, would turn against the president and cooperate with federal prosecutors if faced with criminal charges.Jonathan Chait finds this curious.
Mr. Trump made the call seeking advice from Jay Goldberg, who represented Mr. Trump in the 1990s and early 2000s. Mr. Goldberg said he cautioned the president not to trust Mr. Cohen. On a scale of 100 to 1, where 100 is fully protecting the president, Mr. Cohen isnt even a 1, he said he told Mr. Trump....
Speaking from his experience as a prosecutor, he said even hardened organized-crime figures flip under pressure from the government. The mob was broken by Sammy The Bull Gravano caving in out of the prospect of a jail sentence, Mr. Goldberg said.
... as a public-relations strategy, isnt Trumps lawyer supposed to say he believes Cohen is innocent, and would be shocked to learn if he did something wrong, because of course Trump has never engaged in any illegal behavior and would never tolerate it among his employees? Hes probably not supposed to casually liken the president of the United States to the boss of a criminal syndicate.Chait has a similar response to a quote from voluble Trump loyalist Anthony Scaramucci:
Asked today by Katy Tur if theres any chance [Michael Cohen] would end up cooperating, flipping, Anthony Scaramucci said no, because Cohen is a very loyal person.Chait is right -- in politics, if you're defending an officeholder under investigation, you're supposed to say that that officeholder wouldn't dream of violating the law. These guys have let the mask slip.
You meant because Trump is innocent, right? Cohen is not going to testify against Trump because Trump did nothing wrong?

never a believer in Emanuel Macron. He posed as a new man
untainted by past mistakes and scandals, and when his new party
swept into power some people heralded a new dawn for France.
(Others were just relieved that he beat Le Pen, but really there
was a lot of "new beginning" rhetoric in some quarters.) But so far
as I could see, Macron had no new ideas about how to improve either
the quality of life or the quality of politics. His election
presaged, not a new departure, but more of the same: more debates
about immigration, and more argument over the neo-liberal economic
policies he has promoted. And now, with danger of a far-right
government pushed aside for now, millions of French people are
turning against him:
The undisguised hostility has made clear that, less than a year into this new presidency, anti-Macron sentiment is emerging as a potent force. It is being fueled by a pervasive sense that Mr. Macron is pushing too far, too fast in too many areas nicking at the benefits of pensioners and low earners, giving dollops to the well-off and slashing sacred worker privileges. The French railway system has been shut down by strikes, universities are closed, nurses and orderlies are "working to rule" in many hospitals, and more. Challenged by an interviewer to explain why all these disturbances have broken out at once, Macron could only fume,
The souring of the public mood is reflected in Mr. Macrons drooping poll numbers among workers and the middle class. (His popularity remains high among those that the French call executives.) It is also seen in the streets, where a wave of strikes and demonstrations is testing Mr. Macrons resolve as never before.
Your question is biased! The discontent of the railway workers has nothing to do with the discontent in the hospitals!Which is not true; whatever the particulars, all of these disputes flow from the attachment of French people to their system of lengthy vacations, early retirements, generous healthcare, and safe jobs. Macron, along with most mainstream economists, believes that France must curb its welfare state and encourage entrepreneurship to compete in the 21st century. His main defense of his policies is to accuse his opponents of "intellectual dishonesty." Today, I introduced a resolution formally calling on EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt to resign. I was joined on this resolution by 38 of my Senate colleaguesthe highest number of senators to sign a resolution formally calling for a cabinet officials resignation in U.S. history. This historic resolution sends an unequivocal message to the administration: the American public has lost faith in Scott Pruitt, and its time for him to go. During his time in office, Pruitt has waged all-out war on the bedrock protections that keep our air and water clean, prevent toxic chemicals from contaminating our communities, and safeguard the health of our kids and families. He has done lasting damage to public health and safety gutting the EPAs core mis...
Familys Shipping Company Could Pose Problems for Trumps Transportation Pick: Elaine Chaos family owns ships flagged abroad, a way to avoid U.S. taxes and higher labor costs. But one of Chaos missions at the Transportation Department will be to press American-owned ships to fly the U.S. flag, by ProPublica Dec. 12, 2016, 11:15 a.m. EST ( Albertson-Grove and Hirsch are with the Stabile Center for Investigative Reporting at Columbia University.)
President-elect Donald Trump has named Elaine L. Chao to head the U.S. Department of Transportation, overseeing the nations vast network of highways, railroads and airports. The job also means leading the Maritime Administration, which supervises the shipping industry and has as one of its primary missions to advocate for American-owned ships to fly the U.S. flag.
That could pose a conflict for Chao, whose family owns a shipping business that, while headquartered in New York, operates 17 ships flagged in Liberia and Hong Kong. The ships are owned by subsidiaries of the main business, now called Foremost Group, and most of the subsidiaries are registered in the Marshall Islands, a secretive jurisdiction where companies disclose little about their finances or officers.
Chao, 63, has not worked for Foremost Group except for a two-year stint before going to Harvard Business School. A spokeswoman for Chao said theres no conflict between her duties as secretary of transportation and her ties to her familys company, stressing that Chao has no ownership stake in Foremost.
Financial disclosure statements filed by Chao when she was George W. Bushs secretary of labor from 2001 to 2009 declare no interest in the company, nor do disclosure statements filed by her husband, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky.
The company declined to respond to a detailed list of questions sent by email and to several telephone calls.
Chaos nomination has been widely praised by industry and trade groups.
Throughout her distinguished career in the public, private and nonprofit sectors, she has worked to strengthen our nations economy and competitiveness in a global economy, Matthew Paxton, president of the Shipbuilders Council of America, said in a statement.
When reporters asked council officials if they were aware of her familys holdings, and how that squared with Paxtons statement, the council said it had nothing to add.
Washington University in St. Louis law professor Kathleen Clark, who focuses on ethics, said that Chao would have to recuse herself from proceedings dealing directly with Foremost as transportation secretary, but that most of the...
News Release from the Office of New York Attorney General
A.G. Schneiderman Sends Letter Urging State Lawmakers To Close New Yorks Double Jeopardy Loophole To Prevent Those Pardoned By The President From Evading Potential State Prosecution
Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman sent a letter to state lawmakers today urging them to close a loophole in New Yorks double jeopardy law.
Closing the loophole would ensure that individuals who broke New York law could not evade accountability for any state crimes as a result of a strategically-timed pardon by the president.
The letter is available here: https://ag.ny.gov/sites/default/files/letter_from_ag.pdf
Long ago, the Supreme Court made clear that presidents cannot pardon for state crimesnow its time for New York law to do the same, said Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman. By closing New Yorks double jeopardy loophole, lawmakers can ensure that no one accused of breaking New Yorks laws will escape accountability merely because of a strategically-timed presidential pardon.
We are disturbed by reports that the President is considering pardons of individuals who may have committed serious federal financial, tax, and other crimesacts that may also violate New York law. We must ensure that if the President, or any president, issues such pardons, we can use the full force of New Yorks laws to bring such individuals to justice. https://ag.ny.gov/press-release/ag-schneiderman-sends-letter-urging-state-lawmakers-close-new-yorks-double-jeopardy
From the letter:
April 18, 2018
Dear Governor Cuomo, Speaker Heastie, Majority Leader Flanagan, Minority Leader Stewart-Cousins, and Minority Leader Kolb:
The Presidents power to pardon federal crimes is sweeping and subject to limited review by the other branches of government. Our countrys founders argued this power was benign and would be used by presidents with scrupulousness and caution. Thus far, they have generally been right. Since the Nations founding, presidents have used this power sparingly, largely to do justice, rather than subvert it.
Yet recent reports indicate that the President may be considering issuing pardons that may impede criminal investigations. This is disturbing news, not only because it would undermine public confidence in the rule of law, but also becausedue to a little-known feature of New York law that...

A few weeks ago, President Donald Trump was an outwardly happy man because of the utterance of one solitary word from the lips of special counsel Robert Mueller to one of Trumps lawyers. The word that thrilled the president and his legal team was subject.
It seems that Mueller and one of Trumps lawyers had been negotiating the terms under which the president would submit to an informal interrogation by Mueller and his team of prosecutors and FBI agents. Muellers request for such an interview was not unusual.
Investigators are usually looking to trap an unwary potential defendant into lying to them a crime in that environment, even though the potential defendant is not under oath or unwittingly admitting to them an allegation for which they need proof. The potential defendant often believes foolishly, as history has shown he can actually talk the investigators out of indicting him.
In preparation for this type of interview, the government often tells the lawyer for the person being interviewed whether that person is a witness, a subject or a target. A witness is a person whose knowledge and memory the government wishes to examine. A subject is a person whose behavior is under criminal investigation. A target is a person whom the government plans to indict.
When Trump and his team learned that he was just a subject and not a target, they rejoiced. And then, in a series of bizarre events, all hell broke loose, and his joy turned to gloom. Here is what happened.
In the course of its continuing investigation of Trump, Muellers team came across evidence of criminal behavior on the part of Michael Cohen, Trumps longtime New York City lawyer. Because the evidence was related to activities that took place in New York City, Mueller sent the evidence to the chief federal prosecutor in Manhattan.
After a team of federal prosecutors there examined whatever Mueller brought them, in conjunction with what they already knew about Cohen, they applied to a federal judge for search warrants of venues where they believed Cohen kept files of his work. The search warrants were executed simultaneously at 5:30 in the morning two Mondays ago.
Cohens lawyers then filed a motion that asked a federal judge to prevent the federal prosecutors in Manhattan from examining what the FBI seized enough to fill a small pickup truck arguing that it was Cohens records of the legal work he had performed for his clients and thus was protected by the attorney-client privilege.
In opposition to Cohens motion, federal prosecutors argued that Cohen and Trump have engaged in behavior together that may have been criminal or fraudulent and that they used the attorney-client privilege to mask their communications.
The federal prosecutors also argued that Cohen...
Modern medicine likes to pull off hoaxes, like the great cholesterol hoax that is still in play after four decades. It likes to produce expensive cures on deliver them on its own terms. Inexpensive remedies are shunned, go untested, are said to be unproven (but not disproven), and are peddled by hucksters.
Now that you have that straightened out in your mind, you will love/loathe to hear that humans are about to be genetically edited. No, this is not an attempt to build a super-race of humans. But it is, well, a bit of an expensive scientific high-wire act that will be used to cure a blood disorder.
European researchers have been given the go-ahead to splice DNA to treat a blood disorder known as beta thalassemia, an inherited disease characterized by low production of hemoglobin, the red pigment in red blood cells that carries oxygen.
Stem cells will be harvested from thalassemia patients and then genetically edited and infused back into the patients as a stem cell transplant.
The idea is to cut away the component that represses hemoglobin production. To do that a virus carrying a guided RNA missile will be instilled into the patients stem cells to produce an enzyme (Cas) that will cut away a flawed portion of DNA. To actually insert a new gene sequence, a template DNA would be required.
The plan is to edit the aberrant gene so bone marrow can make high levels of hemoglobin again and release thalassemia patients from chronic dependency upon blood transfusions to overcome their anemia.
Researchers are attempting to reactivate the kind of hemoglobin produced by infants. The BCL11a gene represses the fetal hemoglobin and is the target gene. This gene technology has been shown to dramatically increase fetal hemoglobin in blood stem cells in a lab dish. But now to instill them back into the blood circulation and see if they produce high-hemoglobin daughter cells.
However, there is just one glitch in this gene-editing scheme. Altering the sequence or removal of a faulty gene altogether only addresses the inherited structural defect.
Genetic testing now makes it possible for many people to find out the exact sequences and alterations in their DNA. However, just knowing the DNA sequences is not the whole story. Researchers write: There is another layer of com...
Legendary investor Jim Rogers says market participants should enjoy the rally in stocks while it lasts, issuing a dire warning that the worst correction of his lifetime is coming.
U.S. stocks opened higher on Monday as the corporate earnings season continued, with Bank of America reporting better-than-expected quarterly results.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 182 points, or 0.75%, to 24,542, the S&P 500 was up 0.6% and the Nasdaq rose 0.35%. Leading the Dow higher were Merck & Co. (MRK) and UnitedHealth Group Inc. (UNH) .
Soon somethings going to happen that will make everyone happy again and the market will go up one more time, and that will probably be the last hoorah. Next year will be not a lot of fun, Rogers said in an interview with Kitco News on Monday.
He added, Its been 10 years since we have had a bear market. That is very, very unusual, so the next bear market is going to be the worst in my lifetime.
When promoted to quantify the correction, Rogers said it would easily be over 50%.

Every theory, from every angle, has been stated and restated. Surely at this point there can be no fresh analysis of this man and his presidency. At least thats what I thought, until a few weeks ago, when I spent the afternoon with Ann Coulter, having lunch at one of Beverly Hills most revered Jewish delis.
Ann Coulter and David Cole walk into a Jewish deli. Ill let you write your own punchline.
After surviving a surprisingly pleasant encounter with the paparazzi, as we walked along Rodeo Drive past the fancy boutiques catering to gullible Asian tourists, Ann shared a theory about why Trump has elicited so much irrational hatred from one particularly influential U.S. demographic group. And what she said hit me right in the gut. Shes never publicly written about this theory, but with her permission Ill present it here. Suffice it to say, it falls into the category of Wish Id said that.
A brief preamble. Ever since Trump announced his candidacy, Ive been baffled by the outpouring of blind, irrational hatred directed at Trump by my fellow Jews. Its a hatred that goes beyond partisan politics. Sure, Jews always hate the Republican. But this is something different; this is a hostility, a bitter antagonism, that I typically see directed at people like me. Or actual Jew-haters like David Duke. But Trump? This was a man with absolutely no history of being anti-Jewish. Hes a gentile whos mixed with Jews his entire life, in business, in family, and hes gotten along just fine.
Millionaires and magnates who actually are anti-Jewish (like Henry Ford) develop a reputation long before they hit their 70s. When I was a kid, my mom, a Brooklyn-born Jew, worked as a commercial graphic artist, and it was common knowledge among the people in her field which companies didnt hire Jews. For example, the Hall family (of Hallmark Cards) and the Knotts family (of the eponymous Berry Farm) h...
Dont think you can escape the Fourth Turning the way you might today distance yourself from news, national politics, or even taxes you dont feel like paying. History warns that a Crisis will reshape the basic social and economic environment that you now take for granted. The Fourth Turning necessitates the death and rebirth of the social order. It is the ultimate rite of passage for an entire people, requiring a luminal state of sheer chaos whose nature and duration no one can predict in advance. Strauss & Howe The Fourth Turning
In Part One of this article I laid out the reasons for Gray Champions arising to meet challenges during crisis periods in history. We are ten years into this Crisis and I have been pondering where we go from here. The plot line of the Game of Thrones has opened my eyes to the fact there isnt just one Gray Champion during a Fourth Turning. During the Civil War, Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee were Transcendental prophet generation representatives of the Confederacy. Abraham Lincoln and William Tecumseh Sherman were Gray Champions of the Union.
These were men who would do anything to further their cause, from ordering thousands of men to their deaths on Cemetery Ridge, to burning down cities, to suspending the writ of Habeas Corpus, and seceding from the Union. They were destined to brandish their terrible swift swords in achieving total indisputable victory. But, we know only one side could win.
During the World War II/Great Depression crisis FDR is known as the Gray Champion who took drastic measures on the economic front with his New Deal and sent 16 million young men into battle on a scale never seen in history. Douglass MacArthur commanded many of those men in battles to the death across the Pacific. What is less discussed is the fact Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin were also members of the Missionary prophet generation and were the Gray Champions of their nations.
Churchill defied all odds in holding out during the darkest hours and showed no mercy in bombing Germany into submission when he gained the upper hand. Stalin, a man who had slaughtered millions during his purges, was willing to sacrifice millions more to halt Hitler from conquering his country. The alliance of these three Gray Champions virtually assured victory for the Allies in World War II. An epic crisis required unyielding men to face the challenges without blinking resulting in the deaths of 65 million people.
Since Donald Trumps election, it has become fashionable for his opponents to use a #Resist hashtag on their social media postings. Public demonstrations have become more fashionable than at any time since the Vietnam War. Federal agencies are actively working to thwart the Trump administration; the Obama holdover chief of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau even refused to vacate her office for a Trump appointee. Government employees are avidly leaking documents to the Washington Post and other papers in a way probably never seen before in American history.
Despite such efforts, Trump remains president. Barring death, resignation, impeachment, or Twenty-Fifth Amendment removal, he will continue in the White House until 2020. The controversies around his power should spur Americans to ask fundamental questions about what they owe to Washington.
For generations, politicians have talked as if citizens are obliged both to revere and obey their government. But there are few things more dangerous than swallowing the notion that government is entitled to boundless obedience. Throughout history, governments have occasionally overstepped the bounds of their legitimate power. What should be done when government betrays its promises?
John Lockes work Two Treatises of Government was written in the 1680s, when Englishmen were chafing under the growing tyranny of the Stuart kings. Locke aimed to awaken people to the danger of servile doctrines that the monarchy was promoting. He wrote,
That subjects, or foreigners attempting by force on the properties of any people, may be resisted with force, is agreed on all hands. But that magistrates doing the same thing, may be resisted, hath of late been denied: as if those who had the greatest privileges and advantages by the law, had thereby a power to break those laws, by which alone they were set in a better place than their brethren.
Locke helped Englishmen recognize the folly of presuming that the rulers power was on a moral high ground compared with anyone else who assaulted them:
Should a Robber break into my House, and with a Dagger at my Throat, make me seal Deeds to convey my Estate to him, would this give him any title? Just such a title by his Sword, has an unjust Conqueror, who forces me into Submission. The injury and the Crime is equal, whether committed by the wearer of a Crown, or some petty villain. The title of the offender, and the number of his Followers make no difference in the Offence, unless it be to aggravate it.
We often hear that we need a conversation on race. Considering that Americans are a brainwashed people living in a false history, such a conversation would resemble the one the Russians were expected to have with the British in regard to the Skripal poisoning: Yes, we are guilty. We will pay reparations. Where would you like us to send Putin for trial? In other words, the only acceptable race conversation in the US is one in which white people accept the accusation that they are racist and offer to make amends.
Considering that the only slavery experienced by any living black or white person is income tax slavery, race is an issue only because it has been orchestrated as an issue along with gender and sexual preference. These divisive issues are the products of Identity Politics spawned by cultural Marxism.
In real Marxism, conflict is class conflict. Workers and capitalists have different interests, and history is a struggle between material interests. The capitalist is the villain and the workers are the victims.
In the pseudo Marxism of Identity Politics, the white race is the villain, especially the white heterosexual male, and racial minorities, women, and homosexuals are the victims.
There is, of course, no such thing as a white or black race. There are many different nationalities of whites, and they have done a good job throughout history of killing each other. Similarly, there are many different black tribes and Asian ethnicities who also have fought more among themselves than with others. But all of this goes by the wayside, along with the fact that in the world the racial minorities are actually majorities and the white majority is actually a minority. There are more Chinese or Indians alone than there are white people.
But orchestrated histories are not fact-based.
The working class, designated by Hillary Clinton as the Trump deplorables, is now the victimizer, not the victim. Marxism has been stood on its head.
The American ruling class loves Identity Politics, because Identity Politics divides the people into hostile groups and prevents any resistance to the ruling elite. With blacks screaming at whites, women screaming at men, and homosexuals screaming at heterosexuals, there is no one left to scream at the rulers.
The ruling elite favors a conversation on race, because the ruling elite know it can only result in accusations that will further divide society. Consequently, the ruling elite have funded black history, womens studies, and transgender dialogues, in universities as a way to institutionalize the divisiveness that protects them. These studies have replaced real history with fake history.
For example, it was once universally known that black slavery originated in slave wars between black Afri...
I told you over the weekend that Trumps presidency was over. As a practical matter it is. His yielding to his advisors on every foreign policy issue makes it clear that he cant or wont stand up to the relentless pressure to do what his instincts tell him.
This mornings article at the
State Washington Post paints a very clear
picture of what the situation is. The advisors whose
loyalties are dubious run the show. Their thinking has not
evolved one whit from previous administrations.
Remember what Russian President Vladimir Putin always says, Presidents change. Policies do not.
Case in point they manipulated Trump into over-reacting to the Skripal poisoning by ousting 60 Russian diplomats, even though Trump clearly wanted to match Germany and France.
The United States, they explained, would be ousting roughly the same number of Russians as its European allies part of a coordinated move to punish Moscow for the poisoning of a former Russian spy and his daughter on British soil.
Well match their numbers, Trump instructed, according to a senior administration official. Were not taking the lead. Were matching.
The next day, when the expulsions were announced publicly, Trump erupted, officials said. To his shock and dismay, France and Germany were each expelling only four Russian officials far fewer than the 60 his administration had decided on.
You can almost see the evil glee on the part of the WaPo writer and Trumps staffers who misled him into signing an order they knew he disagreed with.
And this is why Trump is not president currently. This is not the first time hes been backed into a bad decision by the nest of vipers in his administration.
And he wont be until he removes the worst people from his cabinet. Unfortunately, the trend on that front is definitely not our friend.
Tillerson out. Pompeo promoted. McM...
Is ours a government of the people, by the people, for the people, or a kakistocracy rather, for the benefit of knaves at the cost of fools? James Russell Lowell, 19th century American novelist
Let us not mince words.
We are living in an age of war profiteers.
We are living in an age of scoundrels, liars, brutes and thugs. Many of them work for the U.S. government.
We are living in an age of monsters.
Ask Donald Trump. He knows all about monsters.
Any government that leaves mothers and fathers, infants and children, thrashing in pain and gasping for air is evil and despicable, said President Trump, justifying his blatantly unconstitutional decision (in the absence of congressional approval or a declaration of war) to launch airstrikes against Syria based on dubious allegations that it had carried out chemical weapons attacks on its own people. They are crimes of a monster.
If the Syrian government is a monster for killing innocent civilians, including women and children, the U.S. government must be a monster, too.
In Afghanistan, ten civilians were killedincluding three children, one an infant in his mothers armswhen U.S. warplanes targeted a truck in broad daylight on an open road with women and children riding in the exposed truck bed. They had been fleeing airstrikes on their village.
In Syria, at least 80 civilians, including 30 children, were killed when U.S.-led air strikes bombed a school and a packed marketplace.
In Yemen, a U.S. drone bombed a caravan of vehicles on their way to or from a wedding, leaving scorched vehicles and body parts scattered on the road. As investigative journalist Tom Engelhart documents, that 2013 bombing was actually the eighth wedding party (almost 300 civilians dead) wiped out by the U.S. military, totally or in part,...
USA In the aftermath of the Parkland shooting, theres been a fierce debate on how to best protect our schools. This conversation often arises after school shootings, and undoubtedly, gun control comes up as one of the solutions for protecting our schools. Other measures are of course brought up; The ideas of hardening our school with things like metal detectors, more secure entrances, etc. but more often than not the proposal for gun control often takes center stage.
Unfortunately, when these gun control measures are brought up, they are often marketed as common sense or reasonable.
I wouldnt blame those who dont know much about firearms for thinking that these gun control measures they hear about seem reasonable; theyre meant to sound reasonable. But despite the amount of coverage the topic of gun control gets from the media, rarely do they ever go into detail on what the specific gun control legislation or bills actually say.
In my home state of Minnesota, where we have seen gun control bills proposed and pushed into committee hearings in the aftermath of Parkland, the media often gives there one minute sound bite on the legislation being proposed with little detail on what the bill actually says and does. I get it; their viewership probably doesnt want to see a half hour piece on proposed gun legislation going line by line through bills.
But again, the issue this creates is that for most who dont know much about firearms or gun laws, these proposed changes seem reasonable. Its only once you dive into these proposed bills themselves (many of which are very similar from state to state) where you find the issues. And these issues could be a blatant violation of Second Amendment rights, complete disregard for due process, or a back channel for gun registration.
Besides all these issues, too often it seems like theres another important element being completely overlooked in the conversation on gun control and school safety: Efficacy.
Does the proposed solution have some evidence supporting its effectiveness? If we look at many of these shootings, we usually find that the gun control proposed in the aftermath would have done very little to stop the shooting or minimize the casualties.
However, as I mentioned, in the wake of the Parkland shooting, other strategies have been proposed as well. While there are plenty who have criticized the idea, the Parkland shooting seems to have brought up the conversation of allowing those in schools to be armed more than any other previous school shooting.
Im not going to try to dive into all the different ways that this could happen. There have been many ideas proposed, some good, and some bad. Rather I would like to look at the effi...

Google and Facebook are two of the largest and clearest monopolies in the world, and between them, the harvesting of your personal information goes far beyond what most people realize was even possible.
I have recently removed Google Search from this website and replaced with a search engine without the privacy concerns, but has similar capabilities. The search bar at the top of the website is the most used and essential feature for you to research the many thousands of pages Ive published over the last 20 years.
Google catches every single thing you do online if youre using a Google-based feature, and Facebook has a record of everything youve ever said or liked. All of this data is being used to build very powerful personality profiles that are sold for profit and used in a variety of different ways. As previously reported by Gawker:1
Every word of every email sent through Gmail and every click made on a Chrome browser is watched by the company. We dont need you to type at all, [Google co-founder Eric] Schmidt once said. We know where you are. We know where youve been. We can more or less know what youre thinking about.
Facebook Sells Your User Data, and It Can Be Used Against You
Googles data harvesting is particularly concerning in light of its military connections,16 and the fact the company has repeatedly been caught infringing on privacy rights and misrepresenting the type and amount of data it collects and shares on its users. Make no mistake about it: Capturing user data is Googles primary business.17 The fact that it provides practical services while doing so only serves as a convenient distraction from the fact that privacy violations are taking place.

A missing German submarine said to have taken the defeated Nazi leadership to South America has been discovered after nearly 73 years.
The U-3523 was one of Hitlers Type XXI submarines a new and highly advanced design which came too late to stop the allied victory.
It was the first class of U-boats designed to sail submerged for a prolonged period of time and had a range which allowed it to sail non-stop to South America.
The U-3523 was thought to have been sunk by a British B24 Liberator attack on May 6, 1945, but the inability to locate the wreck fuelled rumours that it had escaped.
The U-3523 was located by Denmarks Sea War Museum, whose director said it was on its way to Norway
Now the wreck has been located ten nautical miles north of Skagen Denmarks northernmost town and nine miles west of the position reported by the British bomber.
Denmarks Sea War Museum, which found the submarine, said there was no evidence that it was escaping with Nazi leaders or loot.
After the war, there were many rumors about top Nazis who fled in U-boats and brought Nazi gold to safety, and the U-3523 fed the rumors.
The Type XXI was the first genuine submarine that could sail submerged for a prolonged time, and the U-3523 had a range that would have allowed it to sail non-stop all the way to South America.

Meanwhile, Disney World and Disneyland workers are living in and out of motels or homeless shelters. They are getting by paycheck to paycheck and demand a living wage of $15, which Iger and his company refuse to pay.
Thirty-six thousand unionized Disney workers claim the company is denying them $1,000 bonuses, which were to be offered as a result of tax cuts. However, the company is holding the bonuses hostage until contract negotiations are resolved.
Journalist Michael Sainato recently spoke with several Disney workers and published his report at Shadowproof. He also covered the unionizing efforts of workers at one Burgerville location in Portland, which we published.
We asked Sainato to share more of his thoughts on these workers struggles happening in the United States.

Disney workers describing life in motels because they are paid poverty wages was one of the more stunning parts of your report. How common is this in the United States?
Budget motels are a last refuge for people with nowhere else to go. There isnt a lot of data on the number of people living out of motels, but there have been a lot of reports on how these motels are becoming more popular in areas with a lack of affordable housing and impacting low-income workers in a wide variety of professions.
One aspect your reports on Burgerville workers and Disney workes have in common is the fact that workers are so vulnerable to workplace retaliation, especially if they organize or speak out. What has to happen to protect t...

Instead, senior aides are hoping Trumps trip to South America and subsequent summit with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at Mar-a-Lago will provide a distraction, as well as an opportunity for the president to appear above the fray.
Imagine working someplace where you know your company is about to be the subject of a sustained period of red-hot international news that will be incredibly damaging to your reputation, but you dont even bother to think about how to respond because it would be a futile exercise to lay out a plan that your boss would just ignore.
Now imagine the exact same environment for setting a policy for Syria or Ukraine or the opioid epidemic, immigration policy or anything else of critical interest to the country.

The Washington Post reports that buying weapons in Europe
... an international group of researchers is warning that the firearms trade that enabled militants to obtain ... assault rifles [for the 2015 Paris attacks] is, in fact, still expanding. Militants determined to strike European targets are among the groups and individuals benefiting the most from what the researchers are describing as an arms race. And what's America doing as weapons become easier to obtain in Europe? This:
The study, funded by the European Commission and due to be released Wednesday as part of the Studying the Acquisition of illicit Firearms by Terrorists in Europe (SAFTE) project, warns the increased availability of firearms has contributed to arms races between criminal groups across the European Union.
... Legal firearms sales are much more tightly regulated in Europe than in the United States, so weapons are often smuggled from the western Balkans into the borderless Schengen area that includes countries such as France, Germany and Italy.
U.S. gunmakers are on the verge of getting something theyve wanted for a very long time: a streamlined process for exporting their handguns and rifles, including AR-15 assault-style weapons that have been the focus of national debate.Ya think?
Under a long-awaited rule the Trump administration is expected to propose within weeks, a large number of commercially available rifles and handguns would move off a munitions list controlled by the State Department and onto a different one at the business-friendly Commerce Department....
Opponents of relaxing the export rules argue that decision could come back to haunt the United States if the weapons end up in the wrong hands.
The proposal under review by the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA) has yet to be made public, but experts fear it will lead to less oversight of commercial sales of assault weapons like submachine guns and flame throwers to foreign buyers....Oh, but ... but ... deregulation!
The State Department said it is shifting responsibility to Commerce for approving exports of nonmilitary firearms and ammunition that are already commercially available those under Categories I, II and III on the U.S. Munitions List. The goal is to reduce regulatory bur...

Walmart feels their latest title God Damn Evil is too offensive for their stores.
Stryper released the album last month.
Here is their hit Sorry from their latest album God Damn Evil.
Expressing concerns over the album title, leading national retail chain Walmart has refused to carry chart-topping rock band STRYPERs upcoming 10th studio album, God Damn Evil available April 20, 2018 from Frontiers Music SRL. Several Christian retail chains have also objected to the title and declined to carry God Damn Evil in their stores.
Were disappointed, says STRYPER frontman Michael Sweet. Stryper has always been about making people think outside the box. Our new album title God Damn Evil is a statement thats needed in our society. Weve seen evil rise to new levels and this title is simply a prayer request asking God to damn or condemn all the evil around us. Many chains have joined us in making such a statement. Walmart unfortunately has not. The odd thing is of all the chains out there we assumed Walmart would be one to understand exactly what our point and purpose is. Unfortunately not. Although we respect their decision and whats done is done, its frustrating to see something thats meant for good get misinterpreted and misunderstood.
Rocking since 1984, STRYPER is responsible for such classic 80s metal albums as Soldiers Under Command, To Hell with the Devil and In God We Trust. In fact, STRYPER is the first band (and the only Christian band) to ever have two songs in MTVs Top 10 simultaneously with their hits Free and Honestly. After a sabbatical for much of the 1990s, STRYPER returned strong in the early 21st century. To date, the Dove Award-winning and GRAMMY-nominated band has sold over 10 million records worldwide.

A New Jersey community college professor is under investigation after being caught on camera berating a conservative student.
Brookdale Community College sociology professor Howard Finkelstein shouted f your life while pounding his hand on a table after student Christopher Lyle stated that both men and women can be victims of sexual harassment.
The unhinged professors outburst took place during a Sociology 105, Intercultural Communication class Wednesday, according to a report from NJ Advance Media.
Lyle, 23, told the outlet that this was one of many disagreements he has had with the professor.
I am being discriminated against at my school because of my beliefs, Lyle said. Its a shame.
Lyle told NJ Advance Media that the professor regularly tells him to shut up, has criticized him for owning a gun and dismissed his opinions as the reason America is not great.
Joey Smith, 26, the student who filmed the outburst, said that Finkelsteins class frequently devolves into lectures directed specifically at Lyle. While he doesnt necessarily share many of the views his classmate holds, he does not appreciate the way that Finkelstein treats him. He said that he filmed the outburst to show friends why he hates that course.

Not one hardball was thrown at Comey, naturally since Stephanopoulos is a long time Democrat operative and Clinton sycophant.
Comey just doesnt know when to shut up; we have caught ANOTHER whopper from the former FBI chief from his ABC interview.
On Sunday. Stephanopoulos asked Comey if the Steele dossier triggered the FBIs Russia investigation.
Comey responded with another whopper.
Crooked cop Comey told Stephanopoulos that it was the Papadopoulos information that came in late July that triggered the investigation. He also went on to say the FBI didnt get any information thats part of the Steele dossier until after that.
Partial transcript via ABC:
GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: While this is all going on in July of 2016, the FBI also opens an investigation into the Trump campaign. Why?
JAMES COMEY: Well to be more clear, we opened an investigation into whether there were any Americans associated in any way with the Trump campaign who were working with Russia as part of Russias effort to influence our election. And so in late July, the FBI got information that there was somebody who had had was a foreign policy advisor named Papadopoulos to the Trump campaign.
GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: George Papadopoulos.
JAMES COMEY: Right, who had been talking to someone in London about getting dirt that the Russians had on Hillary Clinton as part of their effort to influence our campaign the our election. And the reason that was important was that was long before the there was any public indication that the Russians had material they were going to dump, which they started dumping in mid-June.
And so we opened, our counterintelligence division, in late July, an investigation to try and figure out we know the Russians are trying to mess with our election. Are any Americans working with them, trying to help them?
GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: You also had had your eye on Carter Page, who had also been working with the Trump campaign.
JAMES COMEY: Correct....

presidency. He doesn't think impeachment is coming any time soon,
even after what he expects to be an "extremely damning" report from

to be a steady decline in Tump voters' enthusiasm.
Meanwhile, the figure of Trump himself gets less and less impressive, as we've seen this week from the ridiculousness-cum-criminality of Scott Pruitt and Ryan Zinke and above all Cohen the feared gangster, with his implosion and defeat by Kimba Wood and WTF Hannity?!??!; after who knows what foreign policy failures, and no Wall, no Muslim Ban, no transgender ban, troops in Syria, the tax law incomprehensible but people notice they're not rich, and the coal industry dying, and NAFTA renegotiated in a way that nobody can differentiate from the way it used to be and talk about the TPP as well and we're talking 2006, the year after Katrina and the evident failure of the Iraq campaign to accomplish anything, and the clarity with which the entirely population was beginning to see the hollowness of W Bush. Trump's base still won't desert him, exactly, no doubt, but there will be discouragement in the ranks, diminished expectations, weeping Alex Joneses, fewer interviews with The New York Times, and their turnout will be very bad.I don't see it -- not before the midterms, and probably not for a couple of years after that.

During a Wednesday morning stop on former-FBI Director James Comeys media tour, he explained why he is no longer a Republican.
Defenders of Comey frequently point to the fact that he was a Republican to defend him from claims of bias.
When asked on the ABC News Start Here podcast if he still considers himself a Republican, Comey responded by saying no, the Republican party has left me, and many others.
Comey also stated that these people dont represent anything I believe in.
The author went on to discuss a website that was created by the Republican National Committee LyinComey.com, which clearly hurt his feelings. The website points out claims made by Comey and his defenders before thoroughly debunking them.
Even Democrats and members of the liberal media have slammed Comey as a partisan, political leaker, LyinComey.com explains.
Though Comey presents himself more as a political pundit than an impartial actor, he appears to be very upset about people pointing that out.
I just think theyve lost their way and I cant be associated with it, Comey said on the podcast.
The disgraced former-FBI leader claimed that changes within the party happened probably over the Trump presidency.
I see the Republican Party, as near as I can tell, reflects now entirely Donald Trumps values, it doesnt reflect values at all. Its transactional, its ego-driven, its in service to his ego, Comey continued while self-promoting. And its, I think, consoling itself that were going to achieve important policy goals a tax cut or something.
Comey stated that he hasnt lost respect for all Republicans however, he still likes Mitt Romney.

If its true that the Republicans are losing their edge with educated white voters over sixty, theyre going to suffer a political bloodbath in November bigger than anything most people have given themselves the right to dream about. And there are signs that theyre already moving in triage mode. If they cant save their majority in the House of Representatives, then the smart thing to do is to divert resources into protecting their majority in the Senate.
There are problems with this strategy, however. People dont die a little bit or a lot. They either die or they survive. Its one thing to lose their house majority, but its another thing to give up on trying to save it. They could make a bad election night into an historically catastrophic one. This election season is setting up in a counterintuitive way, and Im not sure the Republicans understand the dynamics yet.
The founding fathers envisioned the Senate as a bulwark against rash populism and extremism, but the midterms right now look like theyll be the exact opposite of this. The Republicans Senate majority hinges on them holding states like Tennessee and Mississippi and taking over seats in states like West Virginia, Indiana, Missouri and North Dakota. There are other important contests, like the ones in Nevada, Arizona and Florida, but the battlefield is going to be waged almost entirely on Trumps turf. If the Republicans somehow have a big night, they do it by winning seats in traditionally Democratic states like Wisconsin and Michigan but, until proven otherwise, those are Trump states now. As a result, Senate Republicans know they can win these elections if they can turn out Trumps voters but they dont have confidence that they can win them if they produce too much distance between themselves and the president.
The House is the opposite, for the most part. The evidence is mounting that even heavy Trump districts are at risk provided that they have enough upscale voters. Holding traditional Republicans in line is very important to GOP candidates running in even partially suburban districts. These voters had a long history of opposing the Clinton political dynasty, which proved to be crucial to Trumps success. He lost a lot of them, but not so many that it doomed him. He will do much worse in...

One reason its so easy to get an American administration, the mainstream media, and the American people to jump on an anti-Russian bandwagon is of course the legacy of the Soviet Union. To all the real crimes and shortcomings of that period the US regularly added many fictitious claims to agitate the American public against Moscow. That has not come to a halt. During a debate in the 2016 Republican presidential primary, candidate Ben Carson (now the head of the US Housing and Urban Development agency) allowed the following to pass his lips: Joseph Stalin said if you want to bring America down, you have to undermine three things: Our spiritual life, our patriotism, and our morality. This is a variation on many Stalinist quotes over the years designed to deprecate both the Soviet leader and any American who can be made to sound like him. The quote was quite false, but the debate moderators and the other candidates didnt raise any question about its accuracy. Of course not.
Another feature of Stalinism that was routinely hammered into our heads was that of the non-person or unperson the former well-known official or writer, for example, who fell out of favor with the Stalinist regime for something he said or did, and was thereafter doomed to a life of obscurity, if not worse. In his classic 1984 George Orwell speaks of a character who was already an unperson. He did not exist: he had never existed. I was reminded of this by the recent sudden firing of Rex Tillerson as Secretary of State. Matthew Lee, the courageous Associated Press reporter who has been challenging State Department propaganda for years, had this to say in an April 1 article:
Rex Tillerson has all but vanished from the State Departments website as his unceremonious firing by tweet took effect over the weekend.

Immigration and Customs Agents were forced to take matters into their own hands after the NYPD refused to follow orders. In a six-day blitz titled Operation Keep Safe, ICE agents made 225 arrests, 180 of whom were convicted of numerous crimes.
According to an ICE press release, more than 80 had been issued a final order of removal and failed to depart the United States, or had been previously removed from the United States and returned illegally.
New York Citys sanctuary status under Mayor Bill DeBlasio has prevented the NYPD from doing more than catching and releasing illegals, even those convicted of multiple crimes. Looking at the following list, you might remember the flak that then-canidate Trump took for pointing out the disproportionate number of crimes committed by illegals. One look at those rounded up below and there is a sigh of relief that these 225 people will no longer be in our country. unfortunately there are millions more that still need rounded up
Among those rounded up by ICE agents:
Despite headline-grabbing reports of a healthy US labor market, millions of Americans remain unemployed and underemployed. It is a problem that plagues our economy in good times and in bad-- there are never enough jobs available for all who want to work. The problem is most acute for women, youths, blacks, and Latinos, although research also finds a persistent lack of employment for large numbers of working-age men. This report asks a set of big questions: What if we sought to eliminate involuntary unemployment across all demographic groups and geographic regions, by directly creating jobs in the communities where they are needed through a federally funded Public Service Employment program? How could such a radical transformation of the labor market be implemented? What would it cost, and what would it mean for the US economy?
A number of important implications emerge from this analysis. Joblessness, defined as the inability to secure a job at a living wage ($15 per hour), can be eliminated in every corner of America for every eligible person who desires to work. With a standing job offer-- a public option-- available at all times, the US labor market would transition to a permanent state of true full employment. Millions of American families would be lifted out of poverty, and the economy would grow as the benefits of the program spill over into the private sector. Perhaps most astonishingly, this can all b...

The Clinton camp disguised the fact that they were funding the anti-Trump Russia dossier by sending payments to the Perkins Coie law firm who then paid Fusion GPS for the junk document. DeSantis added, If youre going after (Michael) Cohen then why isnt anybody also looking at how the Clintons handled this.

No one believes me, but your ass tastes good. It was always a pleasure to eat it, without exception. People who try and tell you otherwise are no better than people who tell you youre fat.
I would eat your ass right now. Id eat it right after you took a shit. Id eat it and go to work without brushing my teeth. Id eat it and give you a kiss. Id eat it and spit in your mouth and have you spit back at me. You know all of this is true.
People ask me pretty regularly what ass tastes like. If its a man, I tell them to eat a bunch of peanut butter out of the jar with a spoon, then jerk off, then smell their fingers. That smell is close to the taste. Sweet like sugar, a bit nutty, quite a bit like sweaty flesh, and very carnal. Your ass tastes carnal. Like sexuality itself, like seduction or an affair.
If a woman asks me the same question, my mind always flickers back to the same recollection. We were making out on the bed and I was slapping your tits. You were moaning and started to touch yourself when I began sucking on your tits. Your spare hand was buried deep in my hair, pushing my head down like you wanted me to swallow your tits whole. I scooched down and yanked off your panties. They were good ones: light grey with little pink flowers all over them and cute pink trimming around the top. I looked over the insides like always and saw that you really had been enjoying yourself and my dick got even harder. The crotch was wet with streaks of cum and they smelled like youd just given birth to them. I gave them a big lick before I wadded them up and slipped them inside your pussy.
You wanna taste?
You wanna taste all the nice pussy juice your panties are soaking up right now?
I pulled them out and they had gone from moist to wet. When I looked up, your eyes were locked on mine and your mouth was agape and waiting as your hand kept on your clit like it was magnetized. Those panties went straight in your mouth and you looked just about perfect. They were the final mantelpiece needed for your resplendent body. I started fingering you and sucking on your tits again. After a few minutes, it seemed like you were getting close to cumming, so I fished those panties out of your mouth and started laying them across my fingers.
Please keep fingering me, please dont stop now! you yelled out as you increased the pace of your right hand.
How about I finger your asshole, huh?
Anything! Please, just finger me!
With your panties draped over my middle finger, I started to open up your as...
As the 2018 midterm election cycle ramps up, Republican operatives are busy strategizing about how to protect incumbent GOP lawmakers. In one case, though, Republicans are working to overthrow one of its incumbents: Rep. Walter Jones of North Carolina.
Jones, who is in his 11th term in office, cuts an unlikely figure in Washington, D.C. He has fought for a higher minimum wage, tougher regulations on Wall Street, and stronger limits on big money in politics. He has called for restrictions on government surveillance, sharply criticized the leadership of his party for being too cozy with K Street lobbyists and corporate interests, and waged a one-man battle to rein in United States-backed wars raging throughout the Middle East. Though once a strong supporter of the Iraq War, Jones changed his tune as the disastrous war unfolded: Lyndon Johnsons probably rotting in hell right now because of the Vietnam War, and he probably needs to move over for Dick Cheney, he once quipped.
These sorts of strident positions have put him at odds with Republican-aligned special interest groups and the GOP establishment over the years, with party leadership at one point revoking a plum committee assignment, and also dispatching a parade of Washington insiders to undermine him in his Republican primary. Jones has beaten back every attempt in the past, but faces a spirited challenge again this year.
Scott Dacey, a casino and tax lobbyist who also serves on the Craven County Board of Commissioners, will be Joness opponent in North Carolinas 3rd Congressional District Republican primary on May 8. Dacey divides his time between Washington, D.C., and North Carolina. According to a recently filed ethics form, he manages a Washington lobbying firm, from which he collected $509,899 last year in salary and profit-sharing, and co-owns a lucrative investment property on Capitol Hill.
In the past, interest groups aired foreign policy-focused ads alleging that Jones undercut the U.S. alliance with Israel and had been too friendly to Iran. This time, Dacey is hoping to cast Jones as disloyal to President Donald Trump by making Joness vote against Trumps tax reform bill a highlight of the campaign.

As you probably know, Nikki Haley
won't take the blame.
President Trump was watching television on Sunday when he saw Nikki R. Haley, his ambassador to the United Nations, announce that he would impose fresh sanctions on Russia. The president grew angry, according to an official informed about the moment. As far as he was concerned, he had decided no such thing.Anti-Trump GOP strategist Steve Schmidt responded by tweeting this:
It was not the first time Mr. Trump has yelled at the television over something he saw Ms. Haley saying. This time, however, the divergence has spilled into public in a remarkable display of discord that stems not just from competing views of Russia but from larger questions of political ambition, jealousy, resentment and loyalty.
The rift erupted into open conflict on Tuesday when a White House official blamed Ms. Haleys statement about sanctions on momentary confusion. That prompted her to fire back, saying that she did not get confused.
Trump has obliterated Nikki Haleys ability to credibly represent and speak for the United States. She should resign and relax for a couple of weeks before she enjoys a bit of New England springtime. Im thinking New Hampshire might be nice in late May.Steve Schmidt (@SteveSchmidtSES) April 18, 2018

Homeland Security Investigations, or HSI, is the nations second-largest federal investigative agency yet few Americans have ever heard of it. Housed within the Department of Homeland Securitys U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, HSI has operated largely out of the public spotlight for over a decade, even as its agents cases have led to multimillion-dollar seizures and high-profile arrests.
Over the last year, however, HSI has begun to attract more public attention, amid reporting from The Intercept and other outlets. Media reports have shed light on HSIs multibillion-dollar collaborations with Palantir Technologies, the data-mining firm founded by Silicon Valley billionaire Peter Thiel; the agencys access to databases shared with the CIA and the Pentagons Defense Intelligence Agency; HSIs reliance on questionable gang databases as a means to facilitate deportations; and HSIs guidelines for asset seizures.
In February, another layer was peeled back when the independent media website Unicorn Riot began publishing internal policy handbooks for HSI agents from a 2012 manual outlining how HSI operates on the ground. The Intercept has previously reported on HSI handbooks covering denaturalization authorities and search and seizure guidelines.
Federal law enforcement agencies dont like to share any information that they dont have to.
Despite being six years old, the manual, which was obtained by The Intercept, is still considered privileged by the agency. And ICE isnt interested in commenting on the content of the documents, despite the fact that they have become public. ICE spokesperson Matthew Bourke told The Intercept that the internal training materials are law-enforcement sensitive, not publicly available, and were therefore not prepared to comment on any of the handbooks.
Secrecy surrounding internal federal policies pervades all law enforcement communities, said Jonathan Blanks, a research associate for the Cato Institutes Project on Criminal Justice. Federal law enforcement agencies dont like to share any information that they dont have to, he said. Usual...

Most stories about Comeys best-selling memoir have focused on its Hamlet-like agonizing over his potential role in tilting the 2016 election, and his horror at discovering that Trump, once in the White House, was as thuggishly corrupt as the mafia dons Comey had prosecuted before he led the FBI and got fired by Trump. But Comeys insistence on upholding the law is devotional to the point of ruthlessness, as he makes clear when explaining the need to send Martha Stewart to jail in 2003 for lying about an insider stock tip she had received.
People must fear the consequences of lying in the justice system or the system cant work, Comey writes. There was once a time when most people worried about going to hell if they violated an oath taken in the name of God. That divine deterrence has slipped away from our modern cultures. In its place, people must fear going to jail. They must fear their lives being turned upside down. They must fear their pictures splashed on newspapers and websites. People must fear having their names forever associated with a criminal act if we are to have a nation with the rule of law.
This is ridiculous and dangerous, because it suggests Americans are insufficiently cowed by the necessarily God-like wrath of the machinery of law enforcement. Comey is worried that the country risks degenerating into criminality and sloth and that all thats standing between us and chaos is the FBIs lash and our submission to it. Rather than separating himself from the Trump administrations extremism, Comey sounds much like retired Gen. John Kelly, the White House chief of staff who recently bemoaned the lost discipline of an earlier and supposedly sunnier era.
You know, when I was a kid growing up, a lot of things were sacred in our country, Kelly said during a bitter press conference, in which he tried to smear a member of Congress who had accurately reported that a grieving war widow was offended by comments Trump made in a fumbled condolence call. Women were sacred, looked upon with great honor. Thats obviously not the case anymore, as we see from recent cases. Life the dignity of life is sacred. Th...

Ten days ago, President Trump was saying the United States should withdraw from Syria. We convinced him it was necessary to stay.
Thus boasted French President Emmanuel Macron Saturday, adding, We convinced him it was necessary to stay for the long term.
Is the U.S. indeed in the Syrian civil war for the long term?
If so, who made that fateful decision for this republic?
U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley confirmed Sunday there would be no drawdown of the 2,000 U.S. troops in Syria, until three objectives were reached. We must fully defeat ISIS, ensure chemical weapons would not again be used by Bashar Assad and maintain the ability to watch Iran.
Translation: Whatever Trump says, America is not coming out of Syria. We are going deeper in. Trumps commitment to extricate us from these bankrupting and blood-soaked Middle East wars and to seek a new rapprochement with Russia is inoperative.
The War Party that Trump routed in the primaries is capturing and crafting his foreign policy. Mondays Wall Street Journal editorial page fairly blossomed with war plans:
The better U.S. strategy is to turn Syria into the Ayatollahs Vietnam. Only when Russia and Iran began to pay a larger price in Syria will they have any incentive to negotiate an end to the war or even contemplate a peace based on dividing the country into ethnic-based enclaves.
Apparently, we are to bleed Syria, Russia, Hezbollah and Iran until they cannot stand the pain and submit to subdividing Syria the way we want.
But suppose that, as in our Civil War of 1861-1865, the Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939, and the Chinese Civil War of 1945-1949, Assad and his Russian, Iranian and Shiite militia allies go all out to win and reunite the nation.
Suppose they choose to fight to consolidate the victory they have won after seven years of civil war. Where do we find the troops to take back the territory our rebels lost? Or do we just bomb mercilessly?
The British and French say they will back us in future attacks if chemical weapons are used, but they are not plunging into Syria.
Defense Secretary James Mattis called the U.S.-British-French attack a one-shot deal. British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson appears to agree: The rest of the Syrian war must proceed as it will.
The Journals op-ed page Monday was turned over to former U.S. ambassador to Syria Ryan Crocker and Brookings Institute senior fellow Michael OHanlon: Next time the U.S. could up the ante, going after military command and control, political leadership, and perhaps even Assad himself. The U.S. could also pledge to take out much of his air force. Targets within Iran should not be off limits.
When World War II ended, Washington, D.C.s population was about 900,000; today its about 700,000. In 1950, Baltimores population was almost 950,000; today its around 614,000. Detroits 1950 population was close to 1.85 million; today its down to 673,000. Camden, New Jerseys 1950 population was nearly 125,000; today it has fallen to 77,000. St. Louis 1950 population was more than 856,000; today its less than 309,000. A similar story of population decline can be found in most of our formerly large and prosperous cities. In some cities, population declines since 1950 are well over 50 percent. In addition to Detroit and St. Louis, those would include Cleveland and Pittsburgh.
During the 1960s and 70s, academic liberals, civil rights advocates and others blamed the exodus on racism white flight to the suburbs. However, since the 70s, blacks have been fleeing some cities at higher rates than whites. It turns out that blacks, like whites, want better and safer schools for their kids and dont like to be mugged or have their property vandalized. Just like white people, if they have the means, black people cant wait for moving companies to move them out.
At the heart of big-city exoduses is a process that I call accumulative decay. When schools are rotten and unsafe, neighborhoods become run-down and unsafe, and city services decline, the first people to leave are those who care the most about good schools and neighborhood amenities and have the resources to move. As a result, cities lose their best and ablest people first. Those who leave the city for greener pastures tend to be replaced by people who dont care so much about schools and neighborhood amenities or people who do care but dont have the means to move anywhere else. Because the best people those who put more into the citys coffer than they take out in services leave, politicians must raise taxes and/or permit city services to deteriorate. This sets up the conditions for the next round of people who can do better to leave. Businesses which depend on these people, either as employees or as customers also begin to leave. The typical political response to a declining tax base is to raise taxes even more and hence create incentives for more businesses and residents to leave. Of course, theres also mayoral begging for federal and state bailouts. Once started, there is little to stop the citys downward spiral.
Intelligent mayors could prevent, halt and perhaps reverse their city decline by paying more attention to efficiency than equity. That might be politically difficult. Regardless of any other goal, mayors must recognize that their first order of business is to retain what economists call net positive fiscal residue. Thats a fancy term for keeping those people in the city who p...
New schools are popping up. Some offer one year programs but no college degree. Good idea? Ben Carlson at Wealth of Common Sense is irked by the question: Is College Worth the Cost?
Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian gave some advice to young people in a recent interview with the New York Times:
Do you really need to go to college? There is a huge student loan debt problem in this country. I think theres going to need to be a drastic change in how these universities work. And I also think weve lambasted the trades for way too long. You can make six figures as a welder.
These kinds of statements irk me, especially when they come from rich entrepreneurs. This line of thinking reeks of survivorship bias.
Successful entrepreneurs must understand theyre the minority. Most businesses fail and most 18 year-olds dont have what it takes to start, let alone run their own business. I certainly would have been lost at that age trying to make a go at it on my own.
I get what Ohanian is trying to say here. There are plenty of problems with the higher education system. Its too expensive. Most students arent given enough guidance in terms of how their preferred area of study will lead to actual employment or how much that employment will pay. Student loans can also be a huge burden after school for many.
In many ways, much like personal finance, people are mostly on their own when it comes to figuring these things out, which is a shame.
Are we really expecting 18 year-olds to perform a cost-benefit analysis on whether or not they should go to college or skip it altogether and go straight to the working world to save on the tuition costs? Better yet, how many adults perform a cost-benefit analysis when they purchase a new car or house? How many adults do you know who track their spending? Create a household budget? Pay down their debt every month? Save enough for retirement?
One Year of College With No Degree
Lets now consider One Year of College With No Degree, But No Debt And a Job at the End.
As a high-school senior in Hampton, Va., Aidan Cary applied last year to prestigious universities like Dartmouth, Vanderbilt and the University of Virginia.
I will join with many of the other reviewers and say that this book is a must-read for anyone who has any type of self-defense weapon on their person or in their home. After reading the book, Ive come to the sober conclusion that the law doesnt seem to favor the ordinary person who is simply trying to defend themselves. In order to prevail, it would seem that each person needs to have a law degree from Harvard, and the ability to slow down time in the event of lethal force situation. This is the case because the legal system chops up your deadly force encounter, which is measured in seconds, into an esoteric academic exercise where the actions of the parties are scrutinized at the nanosecond level. One can almost imagine a panel of ancient philosophers, psychologists, and scholars evaluating who is in the right and who is in the wrong at any given fraction of a second in the timeline of events. In our system of justice, such reflection is done by the police, the DAs office, your defense attorney, and a jury of your peers folks who know nothing about the law.
The author presents a very sobering view of how the legal system works for those who choose to defend themselves in a violent encounter. Yes, you may have killed the bad guy, and you may feel that you are right, but if the legal system chooses to pursue your actions, you will have two outcomes; the price tag of your legal defense and your freedom, or, 20 years to life in prison. On several occasions, while reading, I thought that death or serious bodily injury might actually be a good option given the real possibility of jail for the rest of my life, a fate that might be assigned by a gun hostile jury or some real error I made in the deadly encounter.
For all of those folks with high capacity magazines, heed this warning. Every single shot you fire in self-defense will be evaluated by the DA. As the author pointed out, there was a case where a subject fired 6 shots. Three were deemed self-defense, while the last 3 were considered attempted murder. The defender was convicted on the 3 bad shots and got a life sentence plus 90 years. So, a magazine with 20 rounds is a joke. If you shoot 20 rounds in a self defense case, you are in for a world of trouble with the justice system.
Lastly, know your state laws. The author goes to great length to compare differences in state law for self-defense. In fact, the last third of this book, is a comprehensive digest of every state law for a meriad of serif-defense issues.
This book is a must read for all gun owners.
The purpose of this book, in my opinion, is to form a proper mental attitude for a self-defense situation....
Nick Giambruno: The migrant crisis is tearing Europe apart. Whats your take Doug?
Doug Casey: Im all for immigration and completely open borders to enable opportunity seekers from anyplace to move anyplace else. With two big, critically important, caveats: 1) there can be no welfare or free government services, so everyone has to pay his own way, and no freeloaders are attracted 2) all property is privately owned, to minimize the possibility of squatter camps full of beggars.
In the absence of welfare benefits, immigrants are usually the best of people because you get mobile, aggressive, and opportunity-seeking people that want to leave a dead old culture for a vibrant new one. The millions of immigrants who came to the U.S. in the late 19th and early 20th centuries had zero in the way of state support.
But what is going on in Europe today is entirely different. The migrants coming to Europe arent being attracted by opportunity in the new land so much as the welfare benefits and the soft life. For the most part they are unskilled and poorly educated.
What were talking about here is the migration of millions of people of different language, different race, different religion, different culture, different mode of living. If youre an alien and youre 1 out of 10,000, or 1,000, or 100, youre a curiosity, an interesting outsider. But an influx of millions of migrants is only going to destroy the old culture, and guarantee antagonismespecially when the locals have to pay for it. In many ways, whats happening now isnt just comparable to what happened 2,000 years ago with the migration of the Germanic northern barbarians into the Roman Empire. Its potentially much more serious.
Nick Giambruno: I think pretty much anywhere in the world, whenever theres an influx of foreigners to the degree that it changes the demographics or upsets the local economic applecart, its obviously going to cause problems.
For example, the Chinese are wearing out their welcome in many parts of Africa.
We saw this ourselves when we went to Zimbabwe earlier this year. Their numbers have grown so much that there are numerous Chinese mini cities within Zim.
Many people in Zim arent too happy with the Chinese dumping cheap products and upsetting the local economy. When we asked our driver to take us through a rough neighborhood, all we saw was a seemingly endless market, as far as I can tell, completely filled with Chinese products.
Doug Casey: Incidentally, its supposed to be official Chinese policy to migrate about 300 million Chinese to Africa in the years to come. Theyre employed in building roads, mines, railroads, and other infrastructure. The Africans like the goodies, but dont lik...
US officials and the presstitutes tell us that the illegal US missile attack on Syria destroyed chemical weapons sites where chlorine and sarin are stored/manufactured. If this were true, would not a lethal cloud have been released that would have taken the lives of far more people than claimed in the alleged Syrian chemical attack on Douma? Would not the US missile attack be identical to a chemical weapons attack and thus place the US and its vassals in the same category as Washington is attempting to place Assad and Putin?
What about it, you chemical weapons experts? Do chemical weapons only release their elements when they explode from intended use but not when they explode from being militarily attacked?
There is no evidence in Syria of chemical residue from the chemical weapons facilities allegedly destroyed by US missiles. No dead victims. No reports of hospitals treating Syrian casualties of the American chemical attack. How can this be if such sites were actually hit?
When I was a Wall Street Journal editor newspapers had competent journalists to whom such a question would occur. But no more. Stephen Lendman takes the New York Times to task for its unprofessionalism. The NY Times is no longer a news source. It is a propaganda megaphone.
Russell begins his specific examination of the acceptance of Christianity by the Germanic people, the first covering the period 376 678. This covers the period from the Germanic entrance into the Roman Empire until the Anglo-Saxon mission by Bishop Wilfrid of York to Frisia.
When speaking of Christianity in this context, there are two prominent theologies: Germanic Arianism and Frankish Catholicism. Seeking refuge from the Huns, the Visigoths negotiated with Valens, the Arian Christian emperor of the Eastern Empire: Arianism was adopted in exchange for asylum.
In Christianity, Arianism is a monotheistic Christological doctrine which asserts the belief that Jesus Christ is the Son of God who was begotten by God the Father at a point in time, is distinct from the Father and is therefore subordinate to the Father. The Arian concept of Christ is based on the belief that the Son of God did not always exist but was begotten by God the Father.
Several characteristics can be noted from this first encounter, characteristics that would repeat for even centuries into the future: political leaders vouched for their subjects regarding Christianization; Christianity was associated with Roman culture and the Roman polity; there was little or no religious instruction prior to baptism.
By the middle of the sixth century, several tribes to include the Bavarians, Thuringians and Lombards accepted the Arian form of Christianity; others including the Franks, Alamanni and Saxons remained unaffected.
Yet Valens suffered defeat and death in the battle of Adrianople; with him, Arianism was on the wane in the empire. The Arian heresy suffered condemnation in the Council of Constantinople in 381.
Why did the leaders of most of the Germanic peoples accept the Arian form of Christianity, just as this heresy was in the process of being extirpated throughout the Roman Empire?
Some believe it is due to the Arian belief that the Son is subordinate to the Father a characteristic easily understood and accepted by a hierarchical culture. Others believe that Arianism spread because it wasnt Roman in this manner, less of a possibility that the Germanic tribes would be absorbed into the Universal Church and therefore into the empire.
It was Clovis, ascending to the thro...

When poor old battered Odysseus landed on Circes island, having lost all his ships except his flagship when he tangled with the Laestrygonianstheir king liked to eat Greek flesh and swallowed up most of his crews, yummyCirce turned the few survivors into swine except for Odysseus, whom she wanted for some old-fashioned hanky-panky.
Odysseus serviced her rather well and stayed in her palace for a year. He also used the moly, the antidote Hermes had given him in the form of a magic herb that turned pigs back into men. When Circe realized that Odysseus was not just a dumb shipwrecked schmuck, she played nice, although kindness was not an everyday happening on her island of Aiaia. But unlike some hardcore feminists of today, Circe developed a soft spot for Odysseus and told him how to get to the underworld and then on to Ithaca and his family. If the kindness toward Odysseus got out, however, I dont think shed crack the glass ceiling and make it to the White House. Hate right now is much more important than love.
Circe came to mind after reading that a female American novelist has recast the goddess as a very nice girl, a hero in her own right, the type youd like to bring home to mother. American women do not particularly like to be considered second-best, yet Circe was just a pit stop of one year in the heros ten-year peregrinations. No longer. Madeline Millers novelone I do not plan to read, incidentallyplaces Circe as a sort of avenging angel. In an interview, Ms. Miller said the following: Circe as a character is the embodiment of male anxiety about female power. Now she tells us. Why, that arch phony Homer, how dare he lead us astray all these 3,000 years. It was all about female power all along and how we men are scared shitless of it.
La Miller has perfect timing. She reads the mood of the culture and writes accordingly. About seven years ago, when being gay became de rigueur among the bien-pensants, she wrote her first anti-classic about the romance between Achilles and Patroclus. Dress designers, hairdressers, Hollywood types, closeted sailors, TV writers, book reviewers, Cond Nast journalists, and others of that ilk all went bananas. Why make war when you can stay in your tent and bugger one another? Back home where it all began, we have never accepted the Achilles-Patroclus friendship as anything but that. But the drop-the-soap-in-the-shower crowd says it aint necessarily so. Too much time in the tent and under the sheets makes Achilles and Patroclus naughty boys. La Miller knew how to catch t...
Part of the production hell that Teslas Model 3 has been going through was due to too much automation along the manufacturing lines, Elon Musk said, indicating that robots are not all they have cracked up to be, and human contributions have been undervalued.
After Teslas chief executive Musk took CBS This Mornings co-host Gayle King on a tour of the Silicon Valley factory, Musk said later on Twitter commenting on the CBS story Yes, excessive automation at Tesla was a mistake. To be precise, my mistake. Humans are underrated.
To CBS, Musk said:
We got complacent about some of the things that we felt were our core technology. We put too much new technology into the Model 3 all at once. This this should have been staged.
Asked by CBS host King whether robots actually slowed production, Musk said:
Yes, they did.We had this crazy, complex network of conveyor belts. And it was not working, so we got rid of that whole thing.
Musk said that he was back to sleeping at the factory in an effort to solve the Model 3 production issues, and that he was now more optimistic about the rate of Model 3 production, after solving some critical things that were holding back Tesla from producing more Model 3s and from reaching its self-imposed production target.
Asked if the 2,000 Model 3s per week rate is sustainable, Musk told CBS Well probably have, I dont know, a three or four-fold increase in Model 3 output in the second quarter.
Tesla had promised 2,500 Model 3s per week by the end of the first quarter, and 5,000 cars by the end of the second quarter. It fell short of the Q1 target, as was widely expected, and confirmed in early April that it continues to target a production rate of approximately 5,000 units per week in about three months.
On Friday, Musk reported that Tesla would be profitable and cash flow would be positive in the third and fourth quarters this year, reiterating that the electric vehicle maker is in no need of raising cashcontrary to the opinion of many analysts who see the company burning cash far too quickly to be sustainable.

As Ron pointed out, its hard to keep up with all of the distortions in the marketplace thanks to a decade of Federal Reserve easy money.
How do you cover all the bubbles? The nature of what the Fed does by manipulating interest rates to lower than the market rate, everything has to be affected to some degree by a bubble and a distortion and a malinvestment, and excessive debt.
Ron pointed out that bubbles are inevitable when central banks tinker with interest rates. They destroy the market signals we need to guide economic decision-making.
Once you get involved in destroying the most important measuring rod for people to make decisions in business and investment, and that is the real interest rates. The market rate of interest tells you a whole lot, at least in a free market economy.
Of course, we dont really have a free market. As Ron put it, you pretty much just have to guess what the Fed is going to do.
Liberty Report cohost Daniel McAdams said the fact that the powers-that-be have managed to pump up subprime bubbles in both autos and housing makes you wonder where their heads are.
But they are addicted to creating new money into credit and this is what it looks like.
Ron said its not only the central bankers who havent learned the lessons of the past. Politicians in DC never learn either.
They try to say, Yes, youre right. Theres mistakes, and they acknowledge that, even when we dealt with the bailouts before. Yes. But the answer is not going to free markets and reining in the Fed. Its to take the mistakes of the Fed and take all the mistakes that business people make and solve the problem with more regulation.
Ron noted that Congress has created its own bubble a giant debt bubble.
Thats probably the biggest bubble were going to be dealing with.
Ron said eventually, the whole fiat system will collapse when the world decides to give up on the dollar. He said he doesnt believe were on the verge of that yet, but thats what the current course of things will eventually lead us to.
Ron didnt just focus on the problems. He pointed out a solution. Get rid of the fiat money sy...
She sits patiently in millions of homes, an unremarkable cylinder commonly referred to as Alexa. But Amazons new virtual assistant has been touted as nothing short of technological revolution.
In response to spoken commands, she answers questions which previously required an internet search, can perform mundane domestic tasks such as turning on lights, and makes online purchases through Amazon, obviously.
Can it all be as innocent as it seems, particularly in an age rife with internet snooping? Or is Alexa a spy? Some users have even reported bone-chilling cackles emanating from their speakers at random moments.
What, then, could possibly go wrong when Peter Hitchens welcomed Alexa into his Oxfordshire home?
How would Alexa fare with a grilling on matters ranging from Beethoven to Bob Dylan, and from the Mid-East crisis to Einsteins theory of relativity?
I am enslaved by machines. But, like most slaves, I know deep down that I chose my fate. I calculated long ago that I preferred a life with mobile phones and computers to one without them. The price is high. It includes the loss of privacy, the unceasing availability to outsiders, the time wasted on the internet, the books unread, the conversations which never happened, the views from train windows that I completely missed as I checked my Twitter feed. I am sorry, but I am not that sorry.
But because my mind hardened before the age of the internet, I can resist much of it. Facebook is a mystery to me. I cannot see the point of it, or Snapchat or Instagram. My use of Twitter is brutally selfish, and if there were a Twitter Police, they would long ago have detained me for questioning.
So I am not the ideal subject for the new electronic fad, the thing most people call Alexa. This is a device about the size and shape of an extra-large family size can of baked beans, adorned with pretty flashing lights, now being widely promoted. The idea seems to be that you talk to it, it replies to you in a soothing voice and it then helps you buy things.
But I dont need this. I like to buy my food at markets, and my books (if possible) from bookshops. I mistrust electronic banking and wont use contactless cards. My experience of voice-activated switchboards is that they misunderstand all but the most simple words.
So with great reluctance I brought...
According to the US Government, MK ULTRA was the code-name for a secret program run by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to conduct mind-control experiments on human beings from 1953 to 1964. The people used in these experiments did not suspect it, seemed to be chosen at random, and were often left emotionally crippled for the rest of their lives.
The rationale for this type of activity? Well, its the typical answer, for national security purposes. Basically, the program was designed to make people do things they normally wouldnt do whilst under mind control, for the purposes of whoever is in charge and calling the shots atop the military industrial complex.
Dr. Ewen Cameron, whos since passed away, was a Scottish-born psychiatrist who served as President of the American Psychiatric Association and Canadian Psychiatric Association, among others. He was one of many who conducted these experiments on patients. Again, the subjects were never told that they were being used as guinea pigs.
This topic became so serious, and a lot of information and research was being conducted by independent researchers to the point where the United States government could no longer deny that these programs took place. Eventually, they declassified what they had, and the government issued an official apology for the program and its victims in the mid 90s.
Multiple victims have also come forward sharing their disturbing experiences.
You can access those files via the CIAs electronic reading room. Simply use MKULTRA as the key word in the search.
As with any sensitive and controversial subject, the disclosure of information is usually, based on my research into Black Budget Special Access Programs, a way to put the subject to rest, or claim that this is all there was to this program. Its a quiet way to stop the concern and questioning from citizens, without really disclosing the full extent of the program, and whether it still runs today.
I believe our television, mainstream media and more were all birthed out of mind-control programs and intentions, but thats just speculation.
Was the program really terminated? Well get to that a little later on in the artic...

Earlier Tuesday, a spokesman for the family confirmed former First Lady Barbara Bush passed away at the age of 92.
People from all sides of the political spectrum set politics aside for a moment and offered condolences.
The hateful professor at Fresno State, however, cheered Mrs. Bushs death then doubled down and wished for the rest of the Bush family to fall to their demise.

One of the nations most powerful anti-minimum wage lobbying groups tapped a longtime Republican pollster to survey the public about a range of issues impacting the industry.
A significant chunk of the survey focused on attitudes toward the minimum wage and many members of the powerful lobby group arent going to like the results.
The poll which was presented on a slide deck obtained by The Intercept and Documented found that seven in 10 Americans want to see the minimum wage raised even if it means that theyd have to pay more for meals. It also found that the industrys various talking points against raising the wage are mostly falling flat with the general public.
Conducted by GOP pollster Frank Luntzs firm LuntzGlobal on behalf of the other NRA the National Restaurant Association the poll found that 71 percent of people surveyed support raising the minimum wage to at least $10 an hour.
The NRA, which did not respond to a request for comment, is the trade association for the massive restaurant industry. It has estimated that restaurant sales reached $799 billion in 2017, up 4.3 percent over 2016, and boasts eight years of consecutive growth in revenue for U.S. restaurants.
The restaurant industry now in the United States is larger than 90 percent of the world economies, said Hudson Riehle, senior vice president of the NRAs Research and Knowledge group.
The NRA paid its CEO, Dawn Sweeney, more than $3.8 million in total compensation, including a bonus of $1.7 million. If her total compensation were computed hourly, it would amount to $1,867.88 per hour (as of four years ago), which would take a minimum-wage worker 247 hours, or six weeks of full-time work, to earn.
The NRA has long claimed that increasing the government wage floor would ratchet up restaurants labor costs and result in thousands of jobs lost, but these result...

On March 4, 2017, President Donald Trump accused his predecessor Barack Obama of spying on him during the 2016 election.

Trump was right!
Not only was the Obama White House spying on him but the Obama administration instructed the DOJ and FBI to surveil Trump.
Freedom Caucus leader Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC) went on with Patrick Johnson on WPTF last week to discuss the latest developments in the Obama-Comey DOJ-FBI spying on Republican Donald Trump.
Rep. Mark Meadows: It now appears that the State Department and the White House at the very highest levels including the president himself were involved in this whole narrative in investigating Donald Trump. And much of that started with a fake dossier that was put together by Democratic opposition research firm as we now know, Fusion GPS that was paid $12 million to come up with this dirt that would suggest that the FBI and DOJ could surveil Donald Trump and spy on an American citizen. Its just not the way we normally think of our FBI and DOJ officials in fact the mass majority of them are great patriots serving their country We believe that contrary to his public statements that not only was President Obama aware but his Chief of Staff Denis McDonough had a briefing on August the 12th of 2016. And then there was another briefing in September. The text messages that Ive had the privilege of reviewing and some of the other correlating information which strongly suggests that there was not only information given to the White House but indeed they were involved in drafting some of the action of the Department of Justice and FBI in the fall of 2016. CIA Director Mike Pompeo reportedly met with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un in a top secret visit during Easter weekend.
President Donald Trump is expected to meet with Kim Jong Un in June or earlier.
POTUS Trump told reporters today his administration has held talks at the highest level recently with Kim Jong Un.

The Hill reported:
CIA Director Mike Pompeo flew to North Korea earlier and met with the nations leader Kim Jong Un, The Washington Post reported Tuesday.
The shocking, top-secret trip took place during Easter weekend ahead of a possible summit between Trump and Kim later this year to discuss Pyongyangs nuclear program.
Trump said Tuesday that the U.S. had direct talks with North Korea at very high levels but did not provide more details.
We have had direct talks at very high levels, extremely high levels, with North Korea, the president said. I really believe theres a lot of good will. Well see what happens, as I always say. Because ultimately its the end result that counts.
He added that the meeting with Kim could take place probably in early June or before that, but cautioned it is hardly a guarantee, based on Kims actions.
Trump has nominated Pompeo as his next secretary of State, though multiple Democratic senators have expressed reticence amid his confirmation process.

Vice Admiral Nancy A. Norton took charge of the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) on February 1, 2018, replacing Army Lt. Gen. Alan Lynn. DISA is a combat support agency of the Department of Defense responsible for planning, developing, fielding, operating and supporting command, control, communications, and information systems. It serves as the Defense Departments IT agency. The agency works to make information virtual and on-demand through its core services, including enterprise services, contracts, spectrum services, network services, voice services, information assurance, computing services, and testing. With more than 8,000 military and civilian employees, DISA oversees defense technology programs with an annual budget of more than $10 billion.
Norton is from Oregon, growing up in Coquille and Roseburg. She graduated from Roseburg High School in 1982 and went to Portland State University, where she earned a B.S. in general science in 1986. Norton subsequently earned an M.S. in computer science from the Naval Postgraduate School in 1994 and an M.A. in national security and strategic studies at the Naval War College in 2008.
Norton originally had her eyes on a medical career, so she joined the Navy after earning her bachelors degree to save money for medical school. However, she grew to love the communications field she entered in the Navy and made a career of it. She was commissioned as a general unrestricted line officer in 1987. Nortons early duty stations included the Naval Communications Area Master Station Eastern Pacific in Hawaii, and the Naval Telecommunications Center in Fallon, Nevada. In 2004-2005, she was in Bahrain, where she commanded Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station Bahrain. She later directed communications for Cruiser Destroyer Group 12 aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise and for the U.S. 6th Fleet and Naval Forces Europe.
She served as chief of Naval operations strategic studies group fellow in Newport, Rhode Island, from 2010 to 2012.
In 2013, Norton was promoted to rear admiral and named director for command, control, communications and cyber for the U.S. Pacific Command in Hawaii. She was transferred to the Pentagon in 2015 as director of the Warfare Integration Directorate in the office of the Chief of Naval Operations.
Norton was named vice director of DISA in 2017 in preparation for taking over as the agencys director.

McConnell says he will not hold a floor vote on the bill even if it gets approved in the Senate Judiciary Committee.
McConnell said the bill is unnecessary because President Donald Trump will not fire Mueller.
Well not be having this on the floor of the Senate, McConnell said on Fox News.
His comments came amid widespread opposition to the bill among members of his caucus, with several GOP senators saying the bill is unconstitutional. Others said its simply not good politics to try and tell Trump what to do, likening the legislation to poking the bear.
Robert Mueller isnt a king. He is not immune from criticism or from being fired.
In fact, the whole point of a special counsel is to avoid a conflict of interest which clearly Mueller has being that hes buddies with Comey.
Just like GOP Rep Louie Gohmert recently said, not only does Mueller need to be fired, he needs to be investigated for his role in the Uranium One scandal.
There is nobody in America that needs firing more than Mueller, Gohmert said.
He needs not only to be fired, he needs to be investigated for his part in helping the Clinton Foundation make $145 million from the sale of Uranium when nobody knew more than Mueller did about the investigation, about the Russian efforts to get our Uranium. He participated. He needs to be the target, not investigating, Gohmert continued.

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., who has been increasingly vocal on the need to recognize the rights of the Palestinian people, laid out a vision for United States policy on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on Monday that is far more sympathetic to the rights of Palestinians than the pro-Israel orthodoxy that dominates both major parties.
Sanders, speaking at the national conference of the Middle East advocacy group J Street in Washington, D.C., called on the U.S. to adopt a more balanced policy toward Israel-Palestine. He condemned recent Israeli attacks on nonviolent protesters, called for an alleviation of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, and even threw in some harsh words for Arab autocrats who express concern for Palestinians but dont put their money where their mouth is.
Sanders may be veering away from the establishment line, but hes still far from being the ally many Palestinians look for in U.S. policymakers. He opposes the boycott, divestment, and sanctions campaign, or BDS, a Palestinian-led movement that aims to hold Israel accountable for its violations of international law, including the expansion of settlements. Sanders has also consistently voted in favor of U.S. military aid to Israel. The U.S. gives billions of dollars in military aid to Israel every year, and generally shields the country from accountability at the United Nations. But in a political system where mainstream politicians in both major parties usually shy away from any vocal criticism of Israeli human rights abuses, the fact that a leading presidential contender and member of the Senate Democratic leadership is willing to do so is noteworthy and a sign that debate in the U.S. is shifting.
To oppose the reactionary policies of Benjamin Netanyahu does not make us anti-Israel, Sanders said to standing applause, opening his remarks. He first spoke at J Streets national conference last year, using that address to applaud the Obama administration for refusing to veto a U.N. Security Council resolution that was critical of Israels settlements, and to encourage a more balanced policy in the Middle East. J Street is an organization that seeks to change the U.S. conversation on Israel and Palestine by organizing within the American Jewish community; it has courted a number of federal politicians to advocate for a two-state solution, but it is far less influential than the hawkish American Israel Public Affairs Committee, or AIPAC.
Sanderss appearance at J Street was significant in a number of ways. The fact that a popular national politician appeared two years in a row at the conference helped bring a national spotlight to the relatively niche organization. And considering that Sanders is a...
Saturday, women gathered in Austrias capital to protest against the ever-growing rape epidemic in Europe. Left-wing activists from Europes ANTIFA wing attempted to shut-down the demonstration until the police had to intervene. I guess they dont believe in the #MeToo movement?
That didnt stop left-wing activists, however, with some demonstrators throwing eggs at the female marchers.

After introductory speeches at the Vienna Ballhausplatz, the protesters marched peacefully towards the German Embassy. In this way, they wanted to express their solidarity with further German protests against asylum and immigrant violence!
Despite 2017 being a banner year for conservative media and conservative journalism, youll notice one major pattern with the announcement of the 2018 Pulitzer Prizes: conservatives need not apply.
Nearly every category was won by a far leftist news source or far left individual. Nearly all organizations that won, The New York Times and Washington Post among them, are fully staffed by individuals who dont just hate the President but have been tirelessly working to discredit the Administration and flood the media cycle with far-left anti-conservative propaganda. You also have Ryan M. Kelly, a photographer who attended the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville (a goldmine for the progressive dogmas) and Andrew Sean Greer, a gay man who has been a vocal mouthpiece for SJW causes since he entered the scene. And then, out of nowhere, you have Kendrick Lamar who won for his virtuosic (their words, not ours) album titled DAMN.
Thats right. Kendrick Lamar. The musician who made a recent career of vitriolically attacking the President and anyone else who actually believes in American values. Breitbart writer Jerome Hudson wrote a wonderful breakdown of a few of these genius tracks on Lamars album:
On the first track, Blood, Lamar takes a swipe by sampling audio of two Fox News reporters reciting anti-police lyrics from his Black Lives Matter anthem Alright And they hate popough, I dont like it which he performed standing atop a police car at the 2015 BET Awards.
The second song, DNA, sees another Fox News audio sampling: Hip-hop has done more damage to young African Americans than racism in recent years.Lamar takes aim at Geraldo Rivera on the third song, YAH, noting that his niece watched the Fox correspondent criticizing her famous uncle.
The Grammy-winner doubled down on politics on LUST, recounting the feeling of watching the news in the hopes that Donald Trump had not won the election.
We all woke up, tryna t...

Oddly enough, Pelosi didnt criticize Obama after he attacked Libya. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) told reporters in San Francisco on Sunday that President Donald Trump had behaved as if he were above the law in ordering precision strikes on Friday targeting Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assads chemical weapons infrastructure. Trump ordered the strikes after
A recent study found that almost 90% of refugees are still not working after 2 1/2 years in The Netherlands.
The refugees found that they make as much money sitting at home as they do at low skilled jobs.
A 2017 study
found similar numbers in Austria.
And a German study found only 1 in 5 refugees were working.
Voice of Europe reported:
Refugees with a residence permit barely have a job, Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf reports. Almost 90% of refugees, who received their residence permit in 2014, were unemployed two and a half years later, according to figures from the Dutch statistics office CBS.
While 11% of refugees do work, a large majority of them still dont have a full-time job. After two and a half years only 15% are fully employed. The group mostly consists of Syrians and Eritreans: 75% of refugees come from one of those two countries.
Dutch migration researcher Jan van de Beek, tells De Telegraaf that a lot of migrants didnt have decent education. According to Van de Beek especially low skilled jobs are unattractive for migrants because sometimes the benefits they receive are just as high as the income from a low skilled job.

On Tuesday, fired FBI Director James Comey responded to Trumps jail threat in an interview with NPR saying its not normal, and its not OK for the president to be tweeting a private citizen should be put in jail.
He misled the FISA court when he signed off on a FISA application to extend a spy warrant on Trump knowing the dossier was a piece of garbage paid for by Hillary but hes the innocent victim.
Comey leaked classified information to the liberal media and may have also perjured himself, but lets all feel sorry for this innocent boy scout.
Crooked Comey also exonerated Hillary Clinton for mishandling classified information before interviewing 17 witnesses, including Hillary Clinton a...
