Project Adolf Unveiled: Meet Honest Adolph! "IndyWatch Feed"

I spoke not long ago about Project Adolph. But what is it?

Well, from Monday 26 September onwards, Neocon Surveillance will be serializing a new anti-war novel. The novel's  name is:

Honest Adolph.

The first volume of the novel will become an ebook in October 2016: more precise release date details to be announced soon! The ebook will also be accompanied by a print version. This first  volume is entitled:

Hunger for Justice.

The novel is set in the near future, leading up to a new Presidential election.

The warmongering Republican and Democratic establishment are expecting to sweep the board, and fortify the current neoconservative/liberal interventionist consensus.

Dissident Republican Senator Saul Friedman is one of the very last of a dying breed of libertarian Republicans.

Expelled from the party, Friedman implores his old friend Adolph Adams to run for the presidency. The plainspeaking and sober Adams is deemed a pitiful joke by the establishment, but he does have some succeed in garnering votes. However, it is simply impermissible that a non-interventionist could ever gain the Democratic ticket. Adams is no more welcome in the Democrats than Friedman was in the Republican Party.

Is there any hope at all that Adams can roll back the tide of interventionist barbarism?

Either way, he faces some truly formidable and cunning foes, who will not relinquish their privilege lightly. Caught between a rabble-rousing firebreather Republican Frontrunner, a hideously callous Democratic leader and various cynical, unprincipled, talented mediocrities, it is not only the career of Adolph Adams that is in peril.

If his enemies can only but have their way, Adolph's defiance of the status quo will eventually cost him his life.

Can this sober and levelheaded man of principle manage to evade the devious plots and schemes of 'the great and the good?'

The only way to find out is to follow this serial.

U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines: Who Is Sung Y. Kim? "IndyWatch Feed"

Sung Y. Kim was nominated on May 19, 2016, to be the U.S. ambassador to the Philippines. If he’s confirmed, it will be his second such post and he’ll be the first person of Asian heritage to serve as American ambassador to that country.

Kim’s father, Kim Ki-wan (a.k.a. Kim Jae-kwon) was a member of the Korean CIA and was posted as a diplomat to Japan. He was implicated in the 1973 kidnapping of dissident (and future president) Kim Dae-jung. Kim himself had been kidnapped, by North Korea, and held for 20 days in 1958.

Born in 1960, Kim was 13 years old when his father, following the kidnapping, moved his family to Los Angeles. Kim received his U.S. citizenship in 1980.

He earned his B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania and received a J.D. from Loyola University Law School in Los Angeles in 1985 as well as an LL.M. from the London School of Economics.

Prior to joining the Foreign Service, Kim worked as a prosecutor in the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office.

Kim’s early assignments included postings to Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong. He also took a year off from the State Department to help nurse his father, who died in 1993. In Washington, Kim worked in the Office of Chinese Affairs and served as staff assistant in the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs.

From 1999 to 2002, he served as a political officer in Tokyo and was the political-military unit chief at the U.S. embassy in Seoul from 2002 to 2006. He then headed the Office of Korean Affairs in Washington from 2006 to 2008.

In July 2008, Kim became the special envoy for North Korean affairs and chief representative to the Six-Party Talks regarding North Korea’s nuclear weapons program. For this position he was accorded the rank of ambassador following confirmation by the Senate.

In 2011, Kim became the first American of Korean descent to serve as ambassador to South Korea. He served there until 2014, when he was named special representative for North Korean policy and deputy assistant secretary for Korea and Japan. Kim has traveled to North Korea at least 10 times and is known for using only English, despite his fluency in Korean, in negotiations with officials of that country.

Kim and his wife, Jae, have two daughters, Erin and Erica. His uncle is a former news anchorman in Korea and he has two cousins who are well-known entertainers there.

Why Andrew Stein, a lifelong Democrat & former NY state assemblyman, will vote for Trump "IndyWatch Feed"

Andrew Stein (born Andrew J. Finkelstein), 71, is a former New York State Assemblyman, had served on the New York City Council, and was a Manhattan Borough President. Stein’s father, Jerry Finkelstein, was the multi-millionaire publisher of the New York Law Journal, among other publications. Andrew shortened his last name to Stein when he entered politics.

A lifelong Democrat, Stein explains in an op/ed for the Wall Street Journal why he’ll be voting for Donald Trump and not Hillary Clinton because the Democratic Party has become “the party of the elites and moneyed class”.

Andrew Stein

Andrew Stein

Party Loyalty Can’t Make Me Vote for Clinton

By Andrew Stein • Wall St. Journal • Sept. 23, 2016

I have been steeped in the Democratic Party all my life. My father, Jerry, was a New York City Democratic chairman and power broker, and I grew up in and around the Democratic Party. When I was a young man, former senators and Democratic presidential and vice-presidential nominees Hubert Humphrey and Estes Kefauver stayed at my apartment and we would proudly discuss the great traditions of the Democratic Party.

My father was a pallbearer at St. Patrick’s for Bobby Kennedy’s funeral. When I was young, Robert F. Kennedy and John F. Kennedy were (and remain) my political heroes. Four years ago, former New York Gov. and liberal lion Mario Cuomo spoke at my father’s funeral. I think his son, current Gov. Andrew Cuomo, is a very effective leader.

I was elected five times to the New York state Assembly as a Democrat. In 1977, I beat David Dinkins and Robert Wagner Jr. in the election for borough president of Manhattan, and then was elected twice as City Council president.

With this background it is very hard for me not to support the Democratic nominee for president this year. But I believe my party has become the party of the elites and moneyed class and has deserted its historic mission as the party of the working class and disadvantaged.

Given my level of discomfort with the current leftist orientation of the Democratic Party, I am now supporting Republican nominee Donald Trump for president. I urge my fellow Democrats to vote for Mr. Trump. I have known him since the early 1970s and have seen his deep concern for people, and how effective he has been while working on behalf of the average citizen.

Donald Trump is no racist. On the contrary, he offers the best hope for rebuilding our inner cities and creating better education and jobs for those trapped in poverty and lacking hope. When a hurricane devastated Puerto Rico in 1984, I asked Mr. Trump to provide a 727 airliner to bring critical supplies to the island. He did so and without publicity. I asked him to rebuild the Wollman Skating Rink in Central Park because the city couldn’t complete it in 10 years. Mr. Trump did it in under six months and under budget.

While he has made some controversial and provocative statements, I strongly believe he will bring needed change and vitality to our nation and shake up our political system, which is in...

Naked Shorts Can’t Stay Naked Forever "IndyWatch Feed"

A few years into his personal quest to understand how he had lost a million dollars on a penny stock, Chris DiIorio developed a sweeping hypothesis involving Knight Capital, the mammoth brokerage company that frequently traded in them.

Knight earned $333 million in pre-tax profits in 2008, and another $232 million in 2009. But DiIorio didn’t think Knight was making that kind of money simply from executing transactions for clients.

As a market maker, Knight was in the rare position of being able to legally sell a stock it didn’t have (the principle being that it will get that stock soon, so no worries). That’s called naked shorting. It’s illegal when regular people do it.

DiIorio suspected that Knight, either on its own behalf or on behalf of clients, made a practice of artificially increasing the number of shares available in a stock through naked shorting, thereby depressing the price.

His suspicion grew when he noticed that Knight often traded in securities that were red-flagged on the Depository Trust Company’s “chill list.”

The DTC is an obscure financial industry-owned company that manages the custody of more than $1 quadrillion in securities annually, recording the transfers with journal entries and guaranteeing the trade. The company makes it easy for people to buy and sell securities without needing to exchange paper stock.

But when the DTC senses trouble, it will stop clearing trades on a stock temporarily.

A chilled stock can still trade — as long as the market participants handle the physical certificates themselves. But it can be a sign that something is gravely wrong. The DTC states on its website that it chills stocks “when there are questions about an issuer’s compliance with applicable law.”

That doesn’t stop Knight from buying and selling them, though. Its chief legal officer, Thomas Merritt, acknowledged at a 2011 Securities and Exchange Commission roundtable that the company actively traded chilled stocks, saying that as long as the security still trades, “we are going to be involved in that business.” And DiIorio found numerous examples of Knight trading chilled penny stocks.

“I didn’t know they did that,” said Jim Angel, a Georgetown University business school professor. “I’m kind of shocked to think that Knight would be working with paper stock certificates.”

He suggested that Knight might simply want to accommodate customers trying to get out of chilled stocks. “Or maybe they feel there’s enough interest in a security that they can trade profitably, even if they have to shuffle the certificates.”

Because most other market makers flee chilled stocks, however, this means Knight can assume even more control over the stock price.

Naked Manipulation

The thing about naked short sales is they can’t stay naked forever.

Even if you don’t have the stock when you sell it, at some point it is expected that you hand it over.

And even with its market-maker exemption, Knight is required by SEC rules to eventually deliver the shares in a naked short transaction to the buyer and close out the trade.

Not doing so results in a “fail to deliver,” which D...

Messages of Anger and Hope from Charlotte as Protests Continue "IndyWatch Feed"

Peaceful protests continued for a fourth night in Charlotte, North Carolina, after a video released by the family of Keith Scott revealed new details about the moments leading up to his death and raised a series of questions about police’s account of the incident.

But despite ongoing anger at city officials, who continued to refuse to release their own video of Scott’s shooting, protests on Friday night were mostly somber and reflective, as protesters and residents grappled with the released video’s emotional content, and with the death of Justin Carr, a protester who was shot earlier this week.

Hundreds of protesters continued to defy the midnight curfew imposed by Charlotte’s mayor, and after rallying, and even dancing, by the city’s police department and marching through the city for a few hours, they gathered by the spot where Carr was shot in the head, where they paid tribute to his life with a minute of silence and took a knee in a gesture inspired by Colin Kaepernick that is quickly becoming a signature of this latest wave of protests against police violence.

Police have arrested a suspect in Carr’s murder — though several of those who were present have raised doubts about the official account of the shooting. Earlier in the evening, at a nearby church, his family and neighbors came together to try to grapple with the absurdity of his death.

“If Mr. Scott hadn’t been killed, then Justin would be here,” an uncle said speaking from the altar. “He was a humble man.”

But while the service mostly steered clear of the polemics raging on the streets, those who took to the podium were quick to point out that Carr’s and Scott’s deaths were both unnecessary and reflective of a growing fear dominating the lives of black men.

“This feels very different,” said a speaker at the church, who talked about being profiled regularly throughout his life, being pulled over up to 15 times a year — “and once, twice in one day,” — but never fearing for his life as much as in recent years. “I have been pulled over before, and I know to keep my hands visible on the wheel. But today that may not matter,” he said.

“We, as men of color, we don’t even have to commit a crime, and we know what the results can be. Look around you. Who’s next?” he asked, before joining the chorus of voices in Charlotte calling for police transparency. “We’ve gotta let them know they’re not serving the city by not releasing the videos.”

The video that was released on Friday — which was filmed by Scott...

Italy: ‘Muslims, Atheists’ Blast Christian TV News Anchor for Wearing Crucifix "IndyWatch Feed"

An Italian television news anchor has ignited a firestorm of criticism by wearing a crucifix around her neck while reporting the news, drawing the ire of “Muslims, atheists and many viewers,” according to reports. Marina Nalesso, a well-known news anchor on the State-owned Tg1 television news show, wore a crucifix around her neck several times last week while on the air, a choice that Silvio Viale, a leftist politician and vocal atheist, has described as “arrogance.” “TG is a public, secular news show, not a Vatican news show,” he said. On her FanPage, Nalesso defended her actions saying that she wears the crucifix “out of devotion and to offer witness,” though she can say nothing further because “we RAI journalists are not permitted to grant interviews without the authorization of management.” This is not the 44-year-old TV anchor’s first offense. She has also been criticized for wearing small medals around her neck bearing the face of Jesus or the Virgin Mary. Despite the storm of criticisms, however, Nalesso has also received support from several public figures such as Giorgia Meloni, an Italian politician and leader of the Fratelli d’Italia party. “We have now reached the point of absurdity,” Meloni wrote

‘I hate my life now’: Parents reveal why they REGRET having children "IndyWatch Feed"

From Daily Mail: Mothers have been taking to social media to reveal what it really feels like to regret having children. Posting anonymously on sites like Facebook, Reddit and Quora, the disgruntled women have made startling confessions describing parenthood as ‘drudgery and monotony’.

Citing reasons from sleep deprivation to financial security – and ‘not liking kids’ – some go as far as confessing they wish their offspring had never been born.

Many have taken to the Facebook page I Regret Having Children in recent months. The group, started in July 2012 by a mother known only as ‘R’, has some 3,200 members and serves as a platform for parents to let off steam without being identified.

One anonymous member told how she was still feeling ‘intense regret’ three months after giving birth to her first child. ‘We had a great relationship before the baby, and I always felt like we could have continued the way we were,’ she said, adding that she had ‘never wanted’ a child but her husband had persuaded her. ‘A few days after having the baby I felt intense regret, and it hasn’t gone away,’ she explained.

‘I just hate my life now, the sleep deprivation, the drudgery, the monotony, and I feel so guilty and ashamed for feeling this way. It’s not my baby’s fault, and he deserves a good mother who wants him. I am needing advice on how to deal with these feelings.’

One 30-year-old father-of-two said he felt he was ‘slipping away from everyone and everything I used to love doing’ as none of his friends were parents. ‘I made the children it’s my job to look after them and i will until the day I die,’ he wrote. ‘But I can’t can’t get the feeling out of my head that my life’s missing… Any men feel the same ?’

A heart-wrenching confession came from the mother to a two-year-old whose lack of sleep had forced her mother to miss work – before suffering a panic attack and a ‘meltdown’ where she threatened to leave her husband. ‘I do not know what to do,’ she admitted. Even when she goes back to sleep, my nerves are so shot that I lie awake and anger consumes my soul.’

The woman added: ‘I hit her yesterday and feel so guilty. I wish I never had her, she takes and takes and we are empty. We have tried letting her cry, sleeping next to her, even put a lock on her room so she would not get out. She still wakes us up.’

One woman told how she had uprooted and moved from Venezuela to the US to be with her now-husband – who was now threatening to divorce her if she didn’t...

There is a Lack of Christianity in the Church of Sweden "IndyWatch Feed"

Church of Sweden
Sweden isn’t famous for being a religious country. In fact, it is considered one of the most secular countries in the world. Despite that, Christianity has been a defining factor in the development of the Western values and lifestyle we have today. In a world where terrorism has become all too commonplace and we are seeing a clash between civilizations and cultures, Sweden desperately needs a Church that stands up for Christianity and for our values. Today, the leader of the Swedish Church has more than just a religious responsibility. They also must stand up against the slaughter of Christians in Syria, Iraq and other Middle Eastern countries. They have a diplomatic duty to reach out to Muslim religious leaders and to persuade them to speak out against fundamental Islam, which is the root of the terror we see today. And unfortunately, that is exactly what the Swedish Church is sorely lacking. Recently, Swedish Archbishop Antje Jackelén wrote a joint article with the Chairman of the Swedish Council for Imams, Mahmoud Khalfi, and other high-profile figures in the Catholic Church and the Jewish community. Instead of taking a clear stance against radical Islamism, the article argued that the situation should

When it comes to Syria, the level of disinformation fraud from US Coalition-aligned agencies shows no sign of diminishing. Labour Councillor Suspended For Calling Gay People ‘Deviants’ "IndyWatch Feed"

A Labour councillor in Scotland has been suspended after allegedly referring to LGBT people as “deviants”. Tom McAughtrie, who has served as a councillor in the Labour party for more than 30 years in Dumfries and Galloway, has been placed under “administrative suspension” by the party’s Scottish branch after making the comments on social media. An inquiry was launched last month after a complaint was received alleging that McAughtrie had called a prominent gay rights activist in Dumfries and her friend, Anglican priest Andrew Crosbie, “deviants” on Facebook. The offending post on McAughtrie’s Facebook account about Dr Belle Doyle, who chairs the area’s LGBT+ group, and Crosbie read: “Thankfully you two deviants were dealt what you deserved by the people of Dumfries.” A source told The National that while it’s unclear what circumstances the Labour councillor’s comments refer to, Dr Doyle, who is a lesbian, found the reference to “deviants” abusive. Crosbie, a priest at Dumfries’ St Bride’s Anglican Church, allows the religious building to be used by Doyle’s LGBT+ society for their monthly meetings and fundraising events. Police interviewed and detained the 65 year old Labour councillor last month for the comments found to have been posted on social

In Case You were Confused about the Out of Africa News "IndyWatch Feed"

Many news outlets are running headlines this week like this one in the Times:

A Single Migration From Africa Populated the World, Studies Find
But others are running headlines like this:
Mysterious Branch of Humanity Possibly Discovered
That story goes on to explain that a "new, ancient" branch of humanity was in Australia before fully modern humans.

Both stores are based on the same group of three articles just published in Nature. Those articles describe studies that analyze large samples of human genomes from indigenous people around the world, 787 in all. They use mutation counts to estimate the date of the common ancestry for all those people. For the most part they come up with dates between 50,000 and 75,000 years ago. Also, they find that all the people outside of Africa are more closely related to each other than they are to most people in Africa, hence, they descend from a single African group.

But wait – what about the skeletons found in Israel, apparently fully modern humans, that have been dated to between 90,000 and 120,000 years ago? What about the tools kits from Saudi Arabia that look like those of fully modern humans and date to 100,000 years ago? Modern human teeth from China dated to 80,000 years ago?

Two of these studies found no evidence for any such people; if they existed, these scientists suggest, they simply went extinct without leaving any descendants. But didn't modern humans interbreed with Neanderthals and Denisovans? Um, yes, they did. And why would they breed with semi-humans they encountered in their travels but not other modern humans?

Which brings us to the third study, based on genomes from Australia and New Guinea:
But on that question, Dr. Metspalu and his colleagues ended up with a somewhat different result. In Papua New Guinea, Dr. Metspalu and his colleagues found, 98 percent of each person’s DNA can be traced to that single migration from Africa. But the other 2 percent seemed to be much older. Dr. Metspalu concluded that all people in Papua New Guinea carry a trace of DNA from an earlier wave of Africans who left the continent as long as 140,000 years ago, and then vanished.
I have some personal history on these questions. When the first genetic arguments for the "one wave out of Africa" were made 15 years ago, I accepted them wholeheartedly. Back then the upper bound for this migration was set at 55,000 to 60,000 years ago, and I began to write and talk about how this date would effect studies of things like language and folklore, given that we now had an actual date for when all the non-African culture of the world diverged. And then came the steady drip of counter-evidence: the Israeli skeletons, the Middle Eastern tool kits, interbreeding with Neanderthals, different genetic calculations that made the date more like 120,000, and so on. That moment of certainty and clarity was, for me, gone. I've never been able to get it back, and these studies don't get me there. It seems quite clear now that all sorts of people and semi-people were wandering around Eurasia 80,000 years ago, leaving traces in Israeli caves and DNA from New Zealand. Plus, my confidence in these genetic dates has been drastically undermined by the work done on the population of the Americas, because it turns out that some geneticists have been calibrating their clocks by asking archaeologists what the date should be and then tweaking their models to get the right date.

So while all of this is very interesting, there is a lot of work yet to be done.

The Lie That Launched Black Lives Matter "IndyWatch Feed"

The Black Lives Matter movement began as a hashtag in July 2013 immediately after the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. Although the movement would be reinforced along the way by any number of lies — “Hands up don’t shoot” comes quickly to mind — not enough attention has been paid to the original lie, one that may eventually launch a thousand riots before it burns itself out, namely that Trayvon Martin was an innocent little boy.

On the night of February 26, 2012, George Zimmerman shot and killed the seventeen-year-old Martin. For a week the story went nowhere until the attorneys representing Martin’s family reached out to Ryan Julison, an Orlando-based media strategist and the one white member of what was rapidly becoming Team Trayvon.

Team leader, attorney Benjamin Crump, understood that the national media were suckers for a story with a racial angle, specifically one that featured a black victim of white injustice. If Zimmerman’s parents had named their son Jorge´ Zimmerman — he was named after his Uncle Jorge´– there might not have been a Black Lives Matter movement.

Current Prices on popular forms of Silver Bullion

After meeting with Crump, Julison immediately began pitching the Trayvon saga to the larger world. Reuters bit first. On March 7, just two days after Julison was contacted, Reuters posted an article headlined “Family of Florida boy killed by Neighborhood Watch seeks an arrest.”

The oversized opening sentence establishes a thesis that has proved irresistible to the major media for the last half century: “The family of a 17-year-old African-American boy shot to death last month in his gated Florida community by a white Neighborhood Watch captain wants to see the captain arrested.” Trayvon was a “good kid.” He hoped to be a pilot. He was carrying the soon to be iconic ice tea and Skittles, the latter for the “thirteen-year-old” son of Trayvon’s father’s girlfriend, now elevated to the role of Martin’s “brother.” Said Crump, “Trayvon only has skittles. He has the gun.”

On March 8, Current TV’s “The Young Turks” took up Trayvon’s cause. Co-host Ana Kasparian, an impressively self-righteous twenty-five at the time, made no fewer than a dozen errors in her five-minute presentation, including this whopper, “There was no self-defense in this situation.” As Kasparian envisioned the action, Zimmerman called 911 and said: “there was someone in the gated community who looks very suspicious, i.e. a young black man who makes me uncomfortable.” Apparently to ease his discomfort, “George Zimmerman decides to go ahead and shoot the 17-year-old black boy in the chest which led to his death.”

“Oh, my God,” gasped her co-host, Cenk Uygur. “He just shot him?”

“He just shot him,” affirmed Kasparian, who then pontificated, “I get so angry when people deny there is racism in this country.”

How Trump Wins the Debate "IndyWatch Feed"

On one of my first trips to New Hampshire in 1991, to challenge President George H. W. Bush, I ran into Sen. Eugene McCarthy.

He was returning to the scene of his ’68 triumph when he had inflicted the first crippling wound on Lyndon Johnson.

“Pat, you don’t have to win up here, you know,” he assured me. “All you have to do is beat the point spread.”

“Beat the point spread” is a good description of what Donald Trump has to do in Monday night’s debate.

With only a year in national politics, he does not have to show a mastery of foreign and domestic policy details. Rather, he has to do what John F. Kennedy did in 1960, and what Ronald Reagan did in 1980. show, she sets no one on fire. Blacks, Hispanics, and millennials who invested high hopes in Barack Obama seem to have no great hopes for her. She has no bold agenda, no New Deal or New Frontier.

“Why aren’t I 50 points ahead?” wailed Hillary Clinton this week.

The answer is simple. America has seen enough of her and has no great desire to see anymore; and she cannot change an impression hardened over 25 years — in 90 minutes.

But the country will accept her if the only alternative is the Trump of the mainstream media’s portrayal. Hence, the strategy of the Democratic Party for the next seven weeks is obvious:

Trash Trump, take him down, make him intolerable, and we win.

No matter how she performs, though, Donald Trump can win the debate, for he is the one over whom the question marks hang. But he is also the one who can dissipate and destroy them with a presidential performance.

In that sense, this debate and this election are Trump’s to win.

Neocons Remove the Mask "IndyWatch Feed"

Jeff Jacoby describes himself as a conservative columnist. He has written for the Boston Globe as the house broken “conservative” since the early 1990’s. According to his Wikipedia page, he is “the region’s pre-eminent spokesman for The Conservative Nation,” and a columnist who had “quickly established himself as a must-read.” Also according to Wiki, he takes a paycheck from the radical left-wing TV station WBUR, one of the many governments run NPR affiliates in New England. He’s also been on the payroll of the Progressive cable outlet CNN.

It’s fair to say Jacoby is typical of Official Conservatism™ the last two decades, which is to say he is a neocon. There used to be a time when there was a big enough distinction between Official Conservatism™ and the Trotskyites that migrated from the Left in the 70’s, but all of them are neocons now. Jacoby was gonzo for the Bush policy of invading the world – invite the world. He continues to say the Iraq War was a success and he is endlessly going on about the Czar and how Trump is a tool of Russia.

If opposition to the Soviets defined the neocons in the Cold War, opposition to Trump is what defines them now. You see that in this Jeff Jacoby column from the other day. The gist of the piece is to remind the reader of America’s past terribleness and then to tie that history of terribleness to the rise of Trump. You’re supposed to come away with the belief that voting for Trump is the same as forming a lynch mob and hanging some coolies. Just as all good thinkers look back with disgust at America’s past, future good thinkers will be revolted by Trump voters.

Current Prices on popular forms of Gold Bullion

Logically, of course, this is nonsense. It is the fallacy of the undistributed middle. There’s nothing connecting today’s voters with the lynch mobs of 150 years ago. More important, no sane person would define America of the 19th century by these rare outbursts of violence. In every age, there are examples of people acting savagely to one another. That is the human condition. What we have here is a rather sleazy attempt to slime the people of the past, and by extension the heritage of everyone alive today, in order to disparage current Americans.

The implication is that discussing immigration is off-limits because to do so risks being just as bad as those imaginary bigots that haunt our past. We can debate how much we bomb the Muslims, but we cannot have a public debate about how many foreigners we allow to settle in our country. Incinerating half a million Arabs over the last twenty years is perfectly fine, but hurting the feelings of would-be migrants from Mexico would make us worse than Hitler. It’s as if Americans don’t have a right to define what it means to be an American.

At the same time, neocons are forever prattling on about how America is not a blood and soil country. Instead, it is a propositional nation. In other words, all you have to do is sign onto the bargain for what it means to be an American and you are an American. That sounds good until they follow that with the argument that Americans don’t get a say in what it means to be an American. The proposition, according to guys like Jacoby, is that they get to use Americans as cannon fodder for waging pointless wars of choice and they also get to replace those Americans with foreigners of their choice.

You can be forgiven for thinking that guys like Jacoby really doesn’t like Americans very much. When he is not comparing us to bloodthirsty, xenophobic murderers, he’s insisting...

Evil, Deceitful, Unspeakable "IndyWatch Feed"

We are all jurors in an ongoing trial to find the truth of John Kennedy’s murder. Most of us have fallen asleep; some left the chamber, and others don’t even care anymore. But a few, a very small few, have been paying attention for the last 45 years as arguments for the prosecution of Lee Harvey Oswald, headed up by government lawyers and their lackeys have been constantly countered by a volunteer and unpaid defense team for the truth made up of laymen, clergymen, historians, teachers, researchers, republicans, democrats, non-affiliates of all ages shapes and sizes.

It has been a bewildering experience to have been patted on the head and told to go to sleep by the Warren Commission only to be rudely awakened by a garrulous DA from Louisiana, followed then by a government report which said, well, there might have been two, but go on back to sleep. Dazed and confused we began to leave the room but were called back in by Oliver Stone who told us to take a look at his evidence of Oswald’s innocence. We were intrigued, but an impish Gerald Posner convinced Dick Cavett and other icons of American mainstream media that Stone’s myth was just that and the case was indeed closed: Oswald did it.

When it was finally opened, the muse of Arlen Spector sauntered forth speaking in only a language that he could understand. Talk shows raved about Vince’s masterpiece; gatekeepers swooned, and the prosecution let out a huge and foul-smelling sigh of relief as they said, There! That ought to put this damn thing to rest finally! Everyone began to pack up and leave, most never having read briefs by Scott, Gerald McKnight, Larry Hancock, etc., defense advocates who had built their arguments on the works of Vince Salandria, Marrs, Howard Roffman, Sheim, Weisberg, etc., and the thousands of pages of released and obscure documents.

But just as the courtroom almost emptied, looking like a Senate Chamber with a wobbling old man named Byrd trying to make a point, in comes a Jesuit priest. I’m no Catholic, I thought, as I was getting up to leave with the two or three other jurors who had sat through the whole case so far, trying to pay attention, but this guy seems to know his stuff. He’s talking about everything we have already heard but putting it all into context. His summation is actually making sense- reason, logic, truth, honesty, footnotes, primary source interviews, follow-up questions, giving the benefit of the doubt to all sides. I sat back down. As James Douglass presented his case, scales fell from my eyes. Oswald was innocent. I look around. Is anybody there?

Last year the flu season was predicted to peak in February.  However, this year the news media, on cue from the Centers for Disease Control, is starting their vaccination campaign early by planting the idea of vaccination in the minds of senior Americans who are most at risk for the flu and suggesting in doubletalk that seniors wait and get their vaccine later rather than sooner (??).

US News & World Report continues with the annual drivel that 36,000 people in the US die from the flu annually.  [US News Sept 21, 2016] The Centers for Disease Control states: “Hundreds of thousands are hospitalized and thousands or tens of thousands of people die from the flu every year.” [ Aug 3, 2016]

The Global Vaccine Institute sets the record straight.  For reference, in the era prior to flu data manipulation, there were only 257 deaths attributed to influenza in 2001.  [

Physical Gold & Silver in your IRA. Get the Facts.

Flu vaccination rates are so low as to be of little significance in heading off a flu epidemic.   Most of the population is unvaccinated for the flu strain in circulation yet the flu is at all time low marks.

Adults over age 65 have the highest flu vaccination rate, close to 70%, probably because they are most at risk for mortal consequences from the flu.  [FoxNews Sept 21, 2016]  Persons age 85 years and up are 16 times more likely to succumb from a flu-related illness compared to adults aged 65-69 years.  [Journal American Medical Assn. 2003]

But flu vaccination has not been effective in older age groups because the ability to produce antibodies to mutating flu viruses is limited among the aged.   This fact is evidenced by the newly licensed high-dose flu vaccine specifically for adults over age 65.  [Morbidity Mortality Weekly Report Aug 6, 2010] The primary reason why retirees get the flu is because their immune system is in decline, not because they are not vaccinated.

Top 18 Secret Mercenary Armies "IndyWatch Feed"

The United States have a well-known history of providing military support to countries in need. But from time to time, the US Government has provided secret forces. While many are successful, there have also been a number of failures. This is a list of the ten top secret armies of the CIA.

1. Ukrainian Partisans Wikipedia

From 1945 to 1952 the CIA trained and aerially supplied Ukranian partisan units which had originally been organized by the Germans to fight the Soviets during WWII. For seven years, the partisans, operating in the Carpathian Mountains, made sporadic attacks. Finally, in 1952, a massive Soviet military force wiped them out.In an attempt to overthrow Indonesian president Sukarno in 1958, the CIA sent paramilitary experts and radio operators to the island of Sumatra to organize a revolt. With CIA air support, the rebel army attacked but was quickly defeated. The American government denied involvement even after a CIA b-26 was shot down and its CIA pilot, Allen Pope, was captured.

5. Khamba Horsemen Wikipedia

After the 1950 Chinese invasion of Tibet, the CIA began recruiting Khamba horsemen – fierce warriors who supported Tibet’s religious leader, the Dalai Lama – as they escaped into India in 1959. These Khambas were trained in modern warfare at Camp Hale, high in the rocky mountains near Leadville, Colorado. Transported back to Tibet by the CIA-operated Air American, the Khambas organized an army number at its peak some 14,000. By the mid-1960s the Khambas had been abandoned by the CIA but they fought on alone until 1970.

Drink Alcohol? "IndyWatch Feed"

By Dr. Mercola

According to the latest statistics, 57 percent of Americans drink alcohol at least once a month.1 Alcohol consumption is a controversial issue. Some studies suggest “moderate” consumption is harmless; others propose it may even have some health benefits.

For instance, research shows people who have one to two drinks a day may have a significantly reduced risk of death from heart disease and “all causes” compared to those who never drink alcohol.2

The latest Dietary Guidelines for Americans also notes that “moderate consumption of alcohol [is a component] of a beneficial dietary pattern in most studies.”3 That said, “moderation” can be a moving target, depending on your age, height, weight, gender, health status, emotional state and more.

And, while some studies show benefits, others show alcohol consumption increases your risk of chronic diseases such as cancer — even at moderate intake levels.4 Moreover, when compared to other recreational drugs, such as tobacco and marijuana, alcohol is the deadliest.5

While it’s certainly good to know you can mitigate the effects of alcohol by exercising more, I would be remiss were I not to mention that chronic alcohol consumption tends to impede your fitness goals.

Not only are you less inclined to exercise if you don’t feel well from the night before, but alcohol also contributes to dehydration and weight gain, and in higher doses can affect testosterone production, muscle protein synthesis, and leucine oxidation, thereby reducing your chances of improving your fitness and building muscle mass.

So, as long as you continue drinking, your exercise merely ends up serving as a stop-gap of sorts, to prevent more serious health problems from developing. And, if you’re making all that effort, wouldn’t it make more sense to maximize your payout by cutting out the booze?

Barney Fife Runs North Carolina "IndyWatch Feed"

NEW YORK—I’m gonna explain this Pat McCrory thing to you.

As his world crumbles around him, Pat McCrory keeps doubling down on the “Keep Our Public Bathrooms Safe” issue.

Surely the man knows he’s losing.

So you may be wondering: Is he insane?

Doesn’t he have some lobe in the Political Survival region of his brain with a neon sign blinking “Bail Out! Seek Refuge! Career Killer Ahead!”

Doesn’t he know this is one of those public Dogpile Jamborees that stays with you the rest of your life and goes on your tombstone?

And yet he keeps churning away. He keeps saying that the nation’s “liberal agenda” is driving his agony. He believes, apparently, that Fortune 500 companies, professional sports leagues, and coaches who belong to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes are all part of the vast “Punish North Carolina” conspiracy, just because we Carolinians are not politically correct.

Myths, Misunderstandings and Outright lies about owning Gold. Are you at risk?

He’s become a states’ righter. The federal gummint needs to keep outta our binness.

Meanwhile, the economic damage to the state is approaching a billion dollars and is almost certain to go higher. McCrory can gaze out the window of his office in the state capitol and watch 18-wheelers full of hundred-dollar bills heading for Interstate 40 West. If it were fifty years earlier, I’d expect him to start claiming a Communist conspiracy. As it is, he’s left with the straw men of “political correctness,” the federal courts, and the Civil Rights Division of the Justice Department, all soft targets that don’t really work anymore because Obama-bashing is simply passé in a year when Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton are occupying all the sniper-rifle target space available.

There’s only one solution to this, and I know what it is because I myself am a Southern white male, therefore fully capable of getting myself into a situation like this.

We need a Southern Female Intervention.

Ideally, this would be his grandma. McCrory is only 60, so there’s a possibility that one of his grandmothers would be alive, but if that’s not an option, it can be his mother, his wife, an older sister, or—if all of those are absolutely unavailable—any pissed-off spinster aunt related by blood.

This designated Southern female will approach McCrory at the breakfast table, withhold the biscuits until she has his attention, and then say, “Pat, you’re either gonna stop this nonsense or I’m gonna slap you nekkid.”

And then she’s gonna serve the biscuits and gravy—and that’s all it will take.

Pat McCrory knows this. He grew up in Jamestown, North Carolina, a town of 3,300 people just 45 minutes down Highway 52 from Pilot Mountain. Pilot Mountain is the town cited by Andy Griffith as the inspiration for Mayberry on The Andy Griffith Show. This is one of the most beloved sitcoms ever made, and the reason is that it always drew a contrast between two ways of solving a problem.

What do evil dictators  look like?  What do they talk like?  Just how wicked is an evil dictator’s wife ?  Should she be toppled along with her husband?  Who am I talking about? President Assad of Syria and his wife, Asmas Al Assad.

These are the same ones boy Rubio, McCain, Lyndsay Graham, Ryan, the Bush’s, Obama, Kerry and Hillary all want to topple down to bring peace to Syria. That is THE LIE  they are and have been shouting.  What they really want to do is take over Syria in order to hurry along their New World Order agenda.  The media whores push the establishment narrative that president Assad of Syria is evil and a corrupt dictator. They fear that when you realize who these people really are, you will be sorry you ever believed any lies told about them, let alone what they have conspired to do against them and all the citizens of Syria.

The real truth is – President  Assad and his wife Asmas Al Assad, care about their people. Syria has been invaded with Islamic radicals that have terrorized their nation. We should be helping Assad, not the radical rebels who have infiltrated in the same manner the US manufactured ISIS has infiltrated throughout the entire region.  President Assad is fighting terrorists.

Meanwhile before Obama’s push to topple Assad and take over Syria, the media wrote wonderful stories about President Assad and his wife Asmas.  Vogue magazine issued a wonderful story calling Asmas the “Rose of The Desert”.  After Obama’s regime targeted Syria, the media buried any good stories and began a cut throat propaganda campaign to match their new narrative of Assad as an evil dictator.  (You know the drill).  They have taken great lengths to rewrite wonderful stories where they once called Asmas Al Assad wonderful things and were amazed at the good will being done by Asmas to people of all faiths. Now they want you to believe that she was faking her lifetime of caring and sided with her so-called evil husband dictator.

The news of the visit was revealed by Clinton aide Nick Merrill, a day after Trump signaled that he was also thinking of visiting the riot stricken city. “Trump is considering trip to Charlotte next week after Monday’s debate, I’m told,” wrote CNN’s Jim Acosta on Twitter on Thursday. “Officials now looking at logistics for a visit.” In an interview with Breitbart News Daily on Friday morning, Omarosa Manigault, the director of African-American outreach for Donald Trump’s campaign, signaled he was considering it. “What he wants to do is to be there for Americans who feel like people have turned their backs on them. And so as long as everything logistically works out, certainly, yes, he will go visit those folks,” she said of Trump’s possible Charlotte visit. But it appears that Clinton has jumped ahead of Trump’s plans, interrupting four planned days of rest and debate preparations at home. The first presidential debate is scheduled for Monday. Clinton has not made a public

U.S. Maternal Mortality Rate Rises, Bucks Trend of Fewer Such Deaths Worldwide "IndyWatch Feed"

Sabrina Tavernise, © 2016 New York Times News Service

WASHINGTON — One of the biggest worldwide public health triumphs in recent years has been maternal mortality. Global death rates fell by more than a third from 2000 to 2015. The United States, however, is one of the few countries in the world that has gone against the grain, new data show. Its maternal mortality rate has risen despite improvements in health care and an overwhelming global trend in the other direction.

The United States has become an outlier among rich nations in maternal deaths, according to new data released Wednesday by the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation, a research group funded by the Gates Foundation and based at the University of Washington.

There were 28 maternal deaths — defined as deaths due to complications from pregnancy or childbirth — per 100,000 births in the United States in 2013, up from 23 in 2005, the institute found. The rate in 2013, the most recent year for which the institute had detailed data for the United States, was more than triple Canada’s. The institute is projecting that the American rate dipped in the last two years to 25 by 2015.

A rise was extremely rare among rich countries. In all, 24 countries had a rise between 2000 and 2015, including South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo, though their rates were much higher. America’s rise put it above a number of poorer countries whose rates had declined with the global trend, including Iran, Vietnam, Russia and Romania.

In all, the U.S. rate was up by more than half since 1990, according to the institute, which uses many different data sources — including countries’ vital records systems — to calculate hundreds of health measures.

The findings are part of a gathering body of evidence on the dismal numbers for maternal mortality among American women and how they keep getting worse. This summer, a group of researchers published an analysis that found the maternal mortality rate had increased by 27 percent for 48 states and the District of Columbia from 2000 to 2014. Texas, analyzed separately, had nearly doubled.

Another analysis this month looked at increases by state, and found particularly high rates in the District of Columbia, New Jersey, Georgia and Arkansas, especially among black women. (The absolute rate can vary by data set, but the upward trend has been clear.)

How is it that the United States, a country with some of the most cutting-edge medical treatments, has some of the worst maternal mortality rates in the developed world?

Most people imagine maternal mortality as 19th-century-style deaths, for example hemorrhage in childbirth or death from eclampsia, a condition involving high blood pressure. Those types of deaths still happen, but their rate has not changed much.

Instead, the rise in recent years has been driven by heart problems and other chronic medical conditions, like diabetes, which has increased sharply in the population. Researchers have theorized that a rise in obesity, particularly acute among poor black women who have much higher rates of maternal mortality than whites, may be contributing to the problem.

“The really scary thing to us is all the deaths from cardiovascular disease and heart failure,” said Dr. William Callaghan, who runs the Maternal and Infant Health Branch in the Division of Reproductive Health at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “It’s a quarter of all deaths. There were almost none in the remote past.”

Maternal deaths are notoriously hard to count. There is of...

Singer Cancels University of Texas Show Because of Concealed Gun Policy "IndyWatch Feed"

By Ryan Kocian, Courthouse News Service

AUSTIN, Texas — Singer-songwriter Ray LaMontagne canceled his Thursday show at the University of Texas’ Bass Concert Hall over the school’s policy to allow patrons to carry concealed handguns at the venue.

LaMontagne who won a Grammy for his 2010 album “God Willin’ & The Creek Don’t Rise,” announced the cancellation in a statement Tuesday.

“This Thursday’s show at Bass Concert Hall in Austin, TX has been canceled due to concerns over the state of Texas’ recently enacted campus-carry law, which allows licensed holders to bring concealed handguns into many performance venues on public university campuses, including the Performing Arts Center at The University of Texas at Austin,” LaMontagne said.

He continued: “I consider myself to be a very open-minded human being, and I always try and see things from another’s point of view. I realize this is a controversial issue and there are strong feelings on both sides of it. But no matter how hard I try to understand the rationale for allowing guns on campus or more broadly, the ‘concealed-carry’ law in general, I just cannot in any way support that ideology.

“There are a lot of things this country needs more of, but guns aren’t one of them. On behalf of myself and the band, and everyone involved in the tour, I want to express our collective disappointment in the decision to allow guns on campus, and within the campus venue. All tickets will be refunded at the point of purchase,” he said.

A university representative provided Courthouse News with this statement: “The university regrets that Ray LaMontagne made this decision but respects his right to do so. Under Texas state law, licensed permitholders are allowed to bring concealed handguns into many performance venues on public university campuses, including the Performing Arts Center at The University of Texas at Austin.”

Senate Bill 11, also called campus carry, was passed in 2015 by the Texas Legislature. It allows concealed carry of handguns by license holders on state college and university campuses, and bars schools from prohibiting them except in certain areas. The law took effect Aug. 1.

In July, the university’s board of regents gave final approval to rules for carrying concealed handguns on campus in order to comply with SB 11.

As to why guns are allowed at Bass Concert Hall but not the Frank Erwin Center, the UT representative said state law allows establishments that sell alcohol to ban license holders from carrying concealed handguns only if the establishment earns 51% or more of its revenue from alcohol sales. He said that while neither the Erwin Center nor the Bass Concert Hall reaches this 51% threshold, the Erwin Center’s events make the difference.

“Concealed handguns are excluded from ticketed events at the Erwin Center because of the unique nature of events held in its arena-style configuration, featuring high levels of excitement, low lighting, loud sounds which may include pyrotechnics, and often the consumption of alcoholic beverages,” he said.

Other barred areas for campus carry include places where formal hearings are being conducted; solo offices for UT faculty and staff; campus residence halls (except for University Apartments); places where a pre-K-12 school-sponsored activity is conducted; at sporting events or interscholastic events; patient-care areas; animal-research facilities; laboratories, where the discharge of a firearm might cause great harm; a polling place during voting; any government court or office used by the court; and the UT Tower observation deck.

The University is in the midst of a lawsuit by three of its professors who sued Attorney General Ken Paxton, UT President Gregory Fenves, and the board...

Government Urges That Bumble Bee Be Placed on Endangered Species List "IndyWatch Feed"

By Gillian Flaccus, Associated Press

PORTLAND, Ore. — Federal wildlife officials on Thursday made a formal recommendation to list the rusty patched bumble bee as an endangered species because it has disappeared from about 90% of its historic range in just the past two decades.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service made the recommendation after the Portland, Oregon-based Xerces Society petitioned the agency on behalf of the bee in 2013 and presented studies showing it was struggling due to a combination of disease, habitat loss, climate change and overuse of pesticides on commercial crops.

If approved, the species would be the first bee listed as endangered in the continental United States, said Rich Hatfield, senior conservation biologist with the Xerces Society.

The group, which advocates for the preservation of pollinator insects such as butterflies and bees, used “citizen scientists” to take counts of the rusty patched bumble bees.

The bees once ranged over 28 states stretching from Minnesota to Maine and into parts of Canada, but are now limited to small and scattered colonies in about a dozen states, including Illinois, Ohio and Minnesota, and one Canadian province, the Fish and Wildlife Service said in a statement Thursday.

Even those populations may have disappeared or been reduced because the last counts were done in 2000, the agency said.

“This is a very difficult thing to track. It’s not like honey bees that are out in boxes that people can go out and count so keeping track of them in the wild is very difficult,” Hatfield said of the bumble bee’s numbers.

The rusty patched bumble bee gets its name for a crescent-shaped, reddish patch on its abdomen. It is one of 4,000 native bee species in North America, Hatfield said.

It is an important pollinator for crops such as cranberries, blueberries and tomatoes and has increasingly been used in commercial farming because it is bigger and stronger than the honey bee. Because of its bigger size, it causes a higher vibration in the pollen-laden anthers of the flowers it is visiting, resulting in more and better fruit harvests, Hatfield said.

But the populations of bumble bees being used to pollinate greenhouse tomatoes, cranberry bogs and blueberry fields have become infected by disease and spread a virulent pathogen to their wild cohorts, causing those colonies to collapse, he said. The phenomenon is similar to the colony collapse that has affected honey bees in recent years, he said.

Honey bees create hives of up to 50,000 individuals and make honey to survive through the winter. Bumble bees live in small colonies of 50 to 500 individuals and don’t make honey because they don’t live through the winter, Hatfield said.

They rarely sting because they don’t have large colonies to protect and don’t have a honey stash to defend, he added.

Seven species of yellow faced bee in Hawaii were proposed for listing by the Fish and Wildlife Service last year, but the recommendation has yet to be finalized, Hatfield said.

“I think one of the great things about pollinator conservation in general is that no matter where you live, you can do something about this,” Hatfield said. “All these animals need our flowers from spring through fall and if we can help create or restore some habitat that’s been lost, we can give bees a chance to recover.”

The public has 60 days to comment on the proposed listing for the rusty patched bumble bee and the agency will make a final ruling within a year of Thursday’s date, said Georgia Parham, an agency spokeswoman.

Defense Attorney Backs Down, Removes “Black Lives Matter” Button in Courtroom "IndyWatch Feed"

By Ken Ritter, Associated Press

LAS VEGAS — A deputy public defender in Las Vegas gave in to a judge’s request on Thursday to remove a “Black Lives Matter” pin in court, after a free-form discussion about the politics of protest and free speech amid a national debate over police brutality and race relations.

In a new show of defiance that wasn’t directly addressed by the judge, Deputy Public Defender Erika Ballou and several attorneys in the audience behind her wore black arm bands.

“I’m taking off the button. I will not wear it in this courtroom in the future,” Ballou told Clark County District Court Judge Douglas Herndon.

“You’ve expressed the fact that you intend to be viewpoint-neutral, and so I will take it off,” she said, “and I believe we can go forward.”

In front of an audience full of supporters, including several who kept wearing their “Black Lives Matter” buttons, Ballou and her boss, Clark County Public Defender Phil Kohn, acknowledged that case law wasn’t on their side.

They agreed with the judge, who said courts have ruled a courtroom is a “non-public forum” where judges can enforce “reasonable and viewpoint-neutral” restrictions on free speech.

“It doesn’t have anything to do with Black Lives Matter,” Herndon said. “It’s about political speech. It’s about remaining neutral and impartial in the court.”

“A black defendant or a white victim ... or a Hispanic witness, or a member of the public,” the judge added. “Nobody should come in and think, ‘Gee, is the judge focusing on that?’“

Outside court, Ballou, who is black, compared the arm band to ribbons that uniformed police and court officers wear on badges to mourn colleagues killed in the line of duty.

She said she believes such displays are also political in nature, and suggested that the issue may end up before state and federal appeals courts.

“It might have to go higher up than this,” she told The Associated Press.

Ballou balked Tuesday at Herndon’s request that she remove the small round “Black Lives Matter” pin from her blouse while representing a white domestic battery defendant at his sentencing hearing.

Herndon sentenced the man on Thursday to five years of probation with strict in-patient substance abuse and domestic violence counseling.

Ballou’s protest came two months after a black defense attorney in Youngstown, Ohio, was arrested on a contempt of court charge for wearing a similar pin in a municipal courtroom.

That attorney, Andrea Burton, said Wednesday she settled her federal civil rights lawsuit with an agreement that allows her to wear the pin in the courthouse — but not in the courtroom.

She said she believed the agreement means uniformed officers also won’t be able to wear black bands on badges in court.

Ballou and Burton said they’ve never met or communicated with each other, and didn’t know of the other’s protest until they were informed by a reporter.

Ballou said she knew wearing her pin this week would be controversial after the Las Vegas police union sent a letter to judges complaining about what the union executive termed “‘Black Lives Matter’ propaganda” in courtrooms.

Scientists Prove Texas Earthquakes Were Caused by Fracking "IndyWatch Feed"

By Seth Borenstein, Associated Press

WASHINGTON — Scientists used radar from satellites to show that five Texas earthquakes, one reaching magnitude 4.8, were caused by injections of wastewater in drilling for oil and gas.

In 2012 and 2013, earthquakes — five of them considered significant — shook East Texas near Timpson. A team of scientists for the first time were able to track the uplifting ground movements in the earthquake using radar from satellites. A study in the journal Science on Thursday says it confirms that these were not natural, something scientists had previously said was likely using a more traditional analysis.

Study co-author Stanford University William Ellsworth said the technique provides a new way to determine what quakes are man-made.

The team looked at two sets of wells, eastern and western. The eastern wells were shallow and the satellite radar showed that the eastern wells weren’t the culprit, but the high-volume deeper western ones were, Ellsworth said.

Cornell University seismologist Rowena Lohman, who wasn’t part of the study, said it shows that satellite data of ground changes provide good ways to complement what’s measured on the ground.

The quakes have stopped, but Ellsworth said, “the area was shaken pretty thoroughly over a period of about 18 months.”

Ellsworth said the shaking stopped when injection of wastewater dramatically decreased. And that’s a lesson that other areas — such as Kansas and Oklahoma — also have learned.

“Part of the solution is how we manage this problem,” Ellsworth said. “If we get the pressure to go down at depth, the earthquakes stop.”

House Intelligence Panel Gets Dozens of Whistleblower Complaints Every Year "IndyWatch Feed"

Critics of leakers have often argued that whistleblowers have legitimate channels through which they can report their grievances, but in the murky world of intelligence, it’s hard to know how many complaints are filed, and what, if anything, happens as a result. Now, the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence says it sees “dozens” of such complaints every year.

The committee will not disclose details on individual cases, however.

“We receive whistleblower-type complaints both through the [Intelligence Community inspector general] — which includes complaints filed through the Intelligence Community Whistleblower Protection Act — and via individuals who approach the committee directly,” said Jack Langer, communications director for Committee Chair Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif. Those complaints number in the “dozens” each year, he added.

The legal process for whistleblowing has been at the center of renewed debate following public disclosures made by Edward Snowden in 2013. Snowden, who worked as an NSA contractor, insists he tried to raise complaints internally, but eventually gave up on the system, for fear of reprisal or dismissal.

Government officials have argued that various legal avenues were fully available to Snowden, and would have been a better option.

The House intelligence committee dropped a blistering three-page summary of its investigation into Snowden last week. In the report, the authors suggest the committee “routinely” receive complaints, and that Snowden’s failure to approach them nullifies his status as a legitimate whistleblower.

There isn’t, however, a public record of statistics on how many whistleblower complaints that Congress receives from the intelligence community; the Senate Intelligence Committee did not respond to request for comment.

The law provides for a “secure means” for intelligence community employees to raise an “urgent concern” to Congress, according to the Department of Defense inspector general. Employees can file a complaint through classified servers online or going directly to the committee; contractors can also file complaints, but they must be assigned to projects within the Defense Intelligence Agency, the National Security Agency, the National Reconnaissance Office, or the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency.

Employees and contractors working for the Central Intelligence Agency are also covered by the law, but report to their own inspector general, or the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

The complaint needs to be about something serious or flagrant — legal abuse, perjury, or an illegal action, and should “not include differences of opinion concerning public policy matters,” the Pentagon inspector general website reads.

“The majority of whistleblower complaints that are brought to the attention of the congressional intelligence committees are heard and addressed in relative obscurity,” Bradley Moss, a national security attorney who has represented whistleblowers, but is a critic of Snowden’s leaks, tells The Intercept. “This is arguably how the system was designed to work, as the complaints generally involve classified information and the process permits the complaint to be heard without exposing the information itself to unauthorized individuals.”

The official whistleblowing system “is by no means a perfect process, as protections against retaliation remain legally flawed,” Moss wrote in an email. “But it should surprise no one that there are numerous people who blow the whistle on things withou...

Hillary cackles like a witch about taking a neurological test, then tells another bald-faced lie "IndyWatch Feed"

Several physicians have spoken out and offered their professional assessment of Hillary’s health. Some say she has Parkinson’s disease — a neurological disease that is progressive, i.e., it’s incurable and only gets worse.

None other than Obama’s former physician, Dr. David Scheiner, has said that Hillary should have neurological testing. Referring to Hillary’s well-known concussion in December 2012, after which a brain scan showed she had a blood clot, for which she continues to be treated with Coumadin, a blood-thinner or anticoagulant, Dr. Scheiner said:

“I think she should have had a neurological examination, a thorough neurological examination in 2016. We know what happens to football players who have had concussions, how they begin to lose some of their cognitive ability….”

On Sept. 21, 2016, while visiting Orlando, Florida, Hillary was interviewed by ABC Action News anchor Sarina Fazan.

At the 3:02 mark in the video below, the reporter brought up Hillary collapsing at the 9/11 memorial ceremony:

“Last week, you were remembering 9/11. I want to talk about your health for a moment. It was startling for many Americans to see you get into that van. I certainly hope you’re feeling better. I wanted to ask you that I know you provided documents from your doctors saying that you are fit to be the president of the United States. Some doctors have said because of your age, as well as your opponent’s age, that you could be at higher risk for dementia or even Alzheimer’s and have suggested that you take some neuro-cognitive test.”

At which, Hillary cackled, like a Hollywood central-casting witch (3:33 mark).

After her mocking cackling subsided, Hillary in effect refused to take a neurological test when she said:

“I am very sorry I got pneumonia; I am very glad that antibiotics took care of it and that’s behind us now. I have met the standard that everybody running for president has met in terms of releasing information about my health.”

Beginning at the 6:44 mark, the reporter asked Hillary about the “scandals” in her past, especially her using an unsecured email server to conduct her work as secretary of state.

Here’s Hillary bald-faced lie (7:19 mark):

“If people are concerned about information, I’ve had some of the most secret information that anybody in government could have. I was involved in the small group advising President Obama about whether or not to go after [Osama] bin Laden. I am very committed to and careful with classified information, and I think that anybody who looks at my whole record knows that.”

What a load of horse manure.

To begin, Hillary had said she didn’t know that ‘C’ stood for ‘classified’ in emails, assuming that we actually believe her ludicrous claim.

The fact is the email that then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton accessed using her unsecured email server contained not just classified information but some of America’s top top secrets, as well as the nam...

FBI and DOJ Vow to Continue Using Junk Science Rejected by White House Report "IndyWatch Feed"

Although a report released this week by the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology concludes that there is scant scientific underpinning to a number of forensic practices that have been used, for years, to convict thousands of individuals in criminal cases, the U.S. Department of Justice has indicated that it will ignore the report’s recommendations while the FBI has blasted the report as “erroneous” and “overbroad.”

The report, titled “Forensic Science in Criminal Courts: Ensuring Scientific Validity of Feature-Comparison Methods,” concludes that a number of common, pattern-matching forensic disciplines – bite mark analysis, fingerprint and firearm comparison, shoe tread analysis, and complex DNA mixture analysis – need additional support to be deemed scientifically valid and reliable – a conclusion in line with that reached in the groundbreaking 2009 report on forensics issued by the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council.

In a statement reported by the Wall Street Journal, Attorney General Loretta Lynch said that the agency remains “confident that, when used properly, forensic science evidence helps juries identify the guilty and clear the innocent, and the department believes that the current legal standards regarding the admissibility of forensic evidence are based on sound science and sound legal reasoning.” As such, she said, while “we appreciate their contribution to the field of scientific inquiry, the department will not be adopting the recommendations related to the admissibility of forensic science evidence.”

The DOJ did not respond to The Intercept’s request for additional information, but based on her statement, it appears Lynch is saying there’s simply nothing to see here and that the criminal justice system is working just fine.

Subjective Eyeballing vs. Scientific Method

The Intercept first reported on the report’s conclusions earlier this month, after obtaining a draft copy. The text of the final report, released Sept. 20, appears to be nearly identical to the leaked draft.

Foundational validity and reliability are essential to shore up forensic practices, the report concludes – attributes that are largely absent in the disciplines it reviewed, which rely heavily on the subjective determinations of practitioners. Pattern-matching forensics involve an examiner determining whether a piece of crime scene evidence can be visually matched to a suspect – whether an alleged bite mark on a victim’s hand matches a suspect’s dentition, for example, or whether a partial, or smudged, fingerprint found at the scene of a crime matches a clean print obtained from a suspect – determinations currently based primarily on a subjective eyeballing of the objects at issue.

“Foundational validity requires that a method has been subjected to empirical testing by multiple groups under conditions appropriate to its intended use,” reads the report. Such studies must demonstrate that a practice is “repeatable and reproducible” and must provide “valid estimates of the method’s accuracy” – in other words, a meaningful error rate. “The frequency with which a particular pattern or set of features will be observed in different samples, which is an essential element in drawing conclusions, is not a matter of ‘judgment.’ It is an empirical matter for which only empirical evidence is relevant,” the report continues. “For forensic feature-comparison methods, establishing foundational validi......

Students Are Pulling a Kaepernick All Over America — and Being Threatened for It "IndyWatch Feed"

Students are being threatened with punishment for not participating in rituals surrounding the national anthem or Pledge of Allegiance — and they are fighting back.

Since NFL 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick sat during the national anthem in August to protest oppression of people of color, many Americans, particularly professional athletes and students, have followed suit. But their constitutional right to engage in such gestures of dissent is not always being respected.

Threats from school administrators and teachers have put free speech advocates like the ACLU on high alert. At Lely High School, a public school in Naples, Florida, the principal told students that they would be removed from athletic events if they refused to stand during the national anthem — though he said the quote was misunderstood when the ACLU of Florida reached out.

“You will stand, and you will stay quiet. If you don’t, you are going to be sent home, and you’re not going to have a refund of your ticket price,” Lely High School Principal Ryan Nemeth told students.

“The Supreme Court ruled in 1943 that public schools may not constitutionally force students to salute the flag,” Lee Rowland, a First Amendment attorney who works with the ACLU, told The Intercept. “That ruling is crystal clear about a student’s right not to be compelled into patriotism by their government, and it is over 70 years old.”

The ruling that Rowland references came after many Jehovah’s Witnesses in the United States began to refuse to salute the flag in solidarity with their brethren in Nazi Germany who were being arrested for refusing to salute that country’s fascist flag.

The action by the American Jehovah’s Witnesses provoked a backlash, and a number of followers of the faith were persecuted for refusing to salute. In West Virginia, a family of Jehovah’s Witnesses brought suit after their children were sanctioned for doing so.

The court ruled in favor of the family. In his opinion, Supreme Court Justice Robert Jackson wrote, “Compulsory unification of opinion achieves only the unanimity of the graveyard.”

Notwithstanding this history, students exercising their right are now being challenged.

In Worcester, Massachusetts, a high school football player was told that he would be forced to sit out a game for kneeling during the national anthem — since then, his suspension was terminated.

“I’m standing up for the injustice that happens to black people every day, not just cops killing black people. We are disrespected and mistreated everywhere we go on a daily basis because of our skin color and I’m sick of it,” Mike Oppong, a junior at Doherty Memorial High School, told a reporter.

A student at Lower Lake High School in Lower Lake, California, Leilani Thomas, was punished for the first time since she first began sitting out the Pledge of Allegiance...

Chelsea Manning Sentenced to Solitary Confinement for Suicide Attempt "IndyWatch Feed"

U.S. Army whistleblower Chelsea Manning has been sentenced to 14 days in solitary confinement — punishment the U.N. recognizes as torture — for charges related to her suicide attempt in July, and for possession of an unmarked book in her cell.

Half of her 14-day punishment was “suspended,” meaning it can be reinstated later, so Manning now faces seven days in isolation. It is unclear when Manning’s sentence will begin.

According to a dictated statement from Manning, once she receives notification of her punishment in writing, she will have 15 days to appeal it.

At a four-hour disciplinary hearing Thursday, at which Manning was not allowed a lawyer, Manning was found guilty of “conduct that threatens,” broadly defined as “any conduct which interferes with the orderly running, safety, good order and discipline, or security of the facility.”

According to a column she wrote in The Guardian, Manning was not allowed to consult with a lawyer while reviewing nearly 100 pages of evidence against her, which she could only examine for an hour the week before.

She was also found guilty of possessing “prohibited property” in her cell — an unmarked copy of “Hacker, Hoaxer, Whistleblower, Spy” — a book about the hacker group and activist movement Anonymous. Manning was acquitted of “resisting the force cell move team,” possibly because she was unconscious when the team arrived.

After being informed of the charges in July, Manning learned that she was facing possible indefinite solitary confinement.

Manning is a transgender woman, but the Army has repeatedly forced her to cut her hair and refused to allow her to receive gender-affirming surgery, despite her psychologist formally recommending it in April 2016.

Earlier this month, after Manning mounted a hunger strike to demand the surgery, the Army relented after five days. She will be allowed to consult with a surgeon, but will still be forced to cut her hair.

Since her arrival in prison, Manning has endured one form of mistreatment after another — including denial of recommended medical care, repeated threats of solitary confinement, and punishment for frivolous charges, like having an expired tube of toothpaste in her cell.

In 2013, Manning was sentenced to 35 years in military prison for sending hundreds of thousands of documents about the U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to WikiLeaks. The documents revealed a far higher number of civilian casualties than the Department of Defense admitted, and included a video of Apache attack helicopters gunning down two journalists in Baghdad.

Chase Strangio, Manning’s lawyer with the ACLU, told The Intercept by email that he was afraid for his client’s well being.

“I am deeply concerned about Chelsea’s well-being after being sentenced to serve time in solitary confinement,” said Strangio. “In July she reached a breaking point and felt that the only agency she had left was to take her life. Thankfully she survived, but the message is clear with yesterda...

Big Players, Little Stocks, and Naked Shorts "IndyWatch Feed"

Chris DiIorio had lost a million dollars when the penny stock he was betting on shed 98 percent of its value in a matter of weeks. But when he looked deeper, he found this wasn’t a typical penny stock pump-and-dump scheme. He was determined to get to the bottom of it.

For one thing, there were two huge companies involved.

UBS, one of the world’s largest private banks, seemed to have no business trading in penny stocks. “This was a $50 billion-plus bank, it didn’t seem like penny stocks would move the needle,” DiIorio said. But just in December 2011, UBS’s trades in 32 penny stocks represented over half of the firm’s total share volume, according to his calculations.

In a one-line response to a series of detailed questions from The Intercept, UBS media relations director Peter Stack wrote in an email: “UBS applies strict due diligence and anti-money-laundering standards to all its business.”

After some research, DiIorio became even more disturbed by the presence of the other company, Knight Capital, which has traded an average of more than 2 billion shares of penny stocks daily for the past three years.

Based in Jersey City, N.J., Knight is what is called a “market maker,” a dealer that facilitates trading by actually holding shares itself, if ever so briefly, so investors can buy and sell without any delay. “They’re selling the service of convenience to investors, like a car dealer makes it easier to buy or sell a car quickly,” said Jim Angel, an associate professor specializing in market structure at Georgetown University.

Knight Capital is a giant in the field; it alone was responsible for 11 percent of all trading in U.S. stocks by volume as of 2012. It’s known in particular for speed. The ability to jump in and out of stocks quickly through electronic markets is attractive to customers and enables Knight to trade nearly $30 billion every single day. “Market making is a business where the spreads are small but the volumes are large,” Angel said. The spread is the difference between the buy price and the sell price, and it’s how Knight makes money.

DiIorio looked closely at how Knight operated. He determined that between 80 and 90 percent of its share volumes came from penny and fractional penny stocks. According to DiIorio’s calculations, Knight traded over 10 trillion shares of OTC and Pink Sheets securities from 2004 to 2012.

This level of volume persists — the most recent statistics show that 73 percent of the company’s equity share volumes in August 2016 came from penny stocks, and 81 percent as recently as May.

A share in a penny stock is worth magnitudes less than a share in Google or Apple. But the spreads — where the market makers cash in — are proportionately bigger on a penny stock. For example, if the market maker earns a penny per share of a $50 stock, that’s only a spread of .02 percent. But a stock worth 25 cents where a market maker sees even a tenth of a penny in profit represents a spread of 2 percent — a 100-fold increase.

Still, DiIorio wondered how much volume a broker would need to make any money through penny stock trading. “You would have to move hundreds of millions of shares per trade,” he said.

And, because his personal investigation had started after his shares in a company called Best Rate Travel tanked precipitously, he also wondered: Why was Knight so involved with them in particular?

While DiIorio wa...

Who Decides When a Protest Becomes a Facebook “Disaster”? "IndyWatch Feed"

The police killing of Keith Scott, only the latest in a chain of black Americans gunned down by law enforcement, has prompted two days of furious and at times destructive protests. But even a violent protest is still a protest — so why is Facebook responding to it by activating a feature built for terrorist attacks, gun massacres, and earthquakes?

Facebook’s “Safety Check” option was first offered to the company’s hundreds of millions of users in 2014, an occasional tool deployed in case of a typhoon or other act of God — “disasters and crises” as the company put it at the time. Since then it’s been activated for manmade catastrophes, including this year’s mass shooting in Orlando, and the November 2015 attack on the Bataclan theater in Paris. It’s a quick way for, say, a student studying abroad to calm worried family members, or anyone else who may be affected by a nearby disaster. The word “disaster” here is important, and it’s one Facebook deliberately uses to describe Safety Check, which itself can be found at

What was originally a feature that had to be manually flipped on by humans at Facebook is now another portion of the service that’s been yielded to the control of an “algorithm.” Facebook hopes to offload all Safety Check disasters onto autonomous software and the crowd, i.e. its more than 1.7 billion monthly active users. This mirrors a similar shift within Facebook’s trending news unit, which went from human to bot control earlier this year. The results have been, you might say, disastrous, with the bots promoting patently false hoax “news” stories. As has been the case with virtually every other decision Facebook has made in recent years, it completely misses that the presentation of information on a mass scale is a deeply political function.

Calling a protest a “disaster” is a case in point: It’s a framing actively exploited by the nation’s increasingly rabidly racist right wing, for whom a Black Lives Matter rally is as much a terrorist gathering as a public ISIS execution in Raqqa. Publications like Breitbart News have been quick to depict this week’s protests as a lawless, orgiastic mob, a non-ideological swell of pure violence tantamount to, well, an earthquake. Converting a protest — even an angry and sometimes violent protest — into a “disaster” strips away the reasons why that protest is happening, distorting the nature of the demonstrations further and further every time a scared white Facebook user assures the world they’re “safe.” This is a move now typical to Facebook: An attempt to wash its hands of editorial and political judgment, to hand off all such responsibility to an opaque “algorithm” we’re supposed to trust as impartial and democratic. How these algorithms actually work is, like all good democratic processes, a trade secret.

Hundreds of people continued to protest on the streets of Charlotte, North Carolina, for the third night in a row on Thursday, marching through the city peacefully for more than five hours, calling for justice for Keith Lamar Scott, and pausing by the spot where a protester was shot in the head on Wednesday.

Twenty-six-year-old Justin Carr died yesterday after sustaining a gunshot wound the night before in a chaotic scene. The official police account — that the shot was not fired by a police officer — has been called into question by some eyewitnesses.

“It could only have come from police,” said a young man who said he had witnessed the shooting, who did not give his name. Flowers and candles marked the site.

But the tragic turn of Wednesday’s protest didn’t prevent people from coming out in large numbers Thursday and continuing to demand that officials release dashcam video of the shooting of Scott, the 43-year-old who was killed by police earlier this week.

Charlotte police chief Kerr Putney said yesterday that the department would not release video of the incident. “I never said ‘full transparency.’ I said ‘transparency,’ and transparency’s in the eye of the beholder,” he said in a widely ridiculed statement.

But after viewing the video yesterday, Scott’s family said through their lawyer that the video raises “more questions than answers,” and that it should be released publicly. In the streets of Charlotte last night, that’s all that people were asking for. “Let us see for ourselves,” someone shouted, as throughout the night people chanted “We want the tapes.”

“He had a motherfucking book!” screamed someone else — referring to early accounts that Scott was holding a book when he was killed, not a gun. His family’s attorney said yesterday that “it is impossible to discern from the videos what, if anything, Mr. Scott is holding in his hands.”

Wake up call — Bumble Bee just proposed for U.S. Endangered Species status "IndyWatch Feed"

Earlier this month, mosquito eradication efforts in South Carolina, gone horribly wrong, resulted in almost total devastation to the indigenous bee populations. The pesticide used to target the Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti species of mosquito, which can carry and transmit the Zika virus, killed off millions of bees. This single incident is one of many that have been laying waste to beneficial pollinators which has now led to the bumblebee’s proposed listing as an endangered species.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on Wednesday proposed listing the rusty patched bumblebee, a prized but vanishing pollinator once widely found in the

Chuck Todd: Trump Is Picking Up Support of Third-Party Candidates Losing Ground "IndyWatch Feed"

chuck todd
Friday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” while commenting on several state polls showing a surge for Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump “Meet The Press,” host Chuck Todd said while the third party candidates are losing ground, “What is mildly surprising is that Trump is benefiting in some of those places more so than Clinton.” Todd said, “One of the reasons why Trump’s numbers have gained a little bit is in some places you do see Republicans coming home. That’s one of the things you noticed there. The other part of is there’s one consistency in all of those new state polls and that’s the two third party candidates are losing ground. What is mildly surprising is that Trump is benefiting in some of those places more so than Clinton. Particularly if you look at the two Colorado polls.” “There’s a second one that shows her with a slightly bigger lead but in each case you see third party candidates sort of fading a little bit,” he continued. “That’s something to watch for after Monday night, without Gary Johnson getting into the debate, I think you probably will see more fading of those third party numbers and then we’ll know for sure

Brazil’s Big Media Ignores Temer’s Confession — Except Estadão Columnist Who Falsely Claimed Video Was Altered "IndyWatch Feed"

The Intercept Brasil’s Inacio Vieira yesterday reported one of the most significant pieces of evidence yet about the real reason for the impeachment of Brazil’s elected president, Dilma Rousseff. Speaking to a group of U.S. business and foreign policy elites, the country’s installed president, Michel Temer, admitted that what triggered the impeachment process was not any supposed “budgetary crimes,” but rather Dilma’s opposition to the neoliberal platform of social program cuts and privatization demanded by Temer’s party and the big-business interests that fund it.

But what’s as revealing as Temer’s casual acknowledgement of coup-type motives is how Brazil’s large media — which is united in favor of impeachment — has completely ignored his comments. Literally not one of Globo’s countless media properties, nor the nation’s largest newspaper, Folha, nor any of the nation’s large political magazines have even mentioned these stunning and incriminating remarks from the country’s president. They’ve imposed a total blackout. While numerous independent journalists and websites have reported Temer’s admission, none of Brazil’s major media outlets have uttered a word about it.

The only exception to this wall of silence was a columnist from the right-wing newspaper Estadão, Lúcia Guimarães, who spent several hours on Twitter yesterday completely humiliating herself in a spirited attempt to deny that Temer actually said this. She began by insinuating that The Intercept Brasil made a suspicious “cut” in the video that altered reality — basically accusing Vieira of committing fraud without the slightest evidence, all to protect Temer.

Then, after a Folha columnist sent her a link to the full video showing that nothing was distorted, she nonetheless announced that she would only believe Temer said this once she saw the drives from each camera simultaneously played, and she added that what made the story so suspicious was that President Temer is a best-selling author of a book on constitutional law who would not say such a thing about impeachment. Only once the full transcript of Temer’s remarks was posted would she finally admit that he really said it, but rather than retract her false accusations or apologize to Vieira and The Intercept Brasil for having implied the video was fraudulently edited, she instead simply posted the relevant part of Temer’s remarks without reference to her prior effo...

The Left have excuses ready for a Hillary defeat "IndyWatch Feed"

In another sign that things are not going well for Hillary and the Democrats know it, four days ago on Sept. 19, 2016. the liberal Huffington Post even published what it calls a “premature obituary” on “Why Hillary Lost“.

Written by three HuffPo editors, including its “global editorial director” Howard Fineman, the essay is a preemptive move warning journalists that they will be blamed for a Hillary defeat.

Howard Fineman, Jason Linkins and Lauren Weber write that if Trump wins:

“no one who lost the battle will want to admit it was Hillary Clinton’s fault. It will have had nothing to do with, say, ‘transparency’ or calling bearded villagers ‘deplorables’ or the Iraq War vote or the simple fact that middle-of-the-road Clintonism ran out of gas as a public philosophy.

No, other individuals, groups and forces will have to be blamed. In fact, they already are, pre-emptively. If Trump wins, we’re all going to be too busy moving to Canada to read the postmortems (or write them), so we offer them to you now:”

circular firing squad

The three HuffPo editors then give a list of 9 scapegoats who will be blamed for why Hillary lost the election, beginning with the MSM as the numero uno:

  1. The Media: “Everyone’s piñata.”
  2. The Russians: “Actually, they arrived long ago and got into her phone.”
  3. Millenials: “Ugh. F**king idealists….”
  4. Bernie Sanders: Hillary should have run unopposed in the primary. “It’s going to be an endless wail about how Sanders should have withdrawn sooner.”
  5. Bill Clinton: ” Best campaigner of all time and he couldn’t close the sale. He lost his mojo.”
  6. Sexists: “F**king glass ceiling.”
  7. Obama people
  8. FBI Director James Comey: “He might as well have indicted her for real, like he did in the court of public opinion. Extremely careless.”
  9. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz and the DNC: Although Wasserman-Schutz’s “Soviet-style approach to boosting Clinton was something that Hillary’s campaign was happy to countenance,” the former DNC chair “should have left room for dissent rather than let it bottle up.”

Of course, what HuffPo conveniently left out is this reason:

An Era of Weaponized Sensitivity "IndyWatch Feed"

Lionel Shriver is not backing down from the controversial speech about Cultural Appropriation she made a few weeks ago at the Brisbane Writers' Festival:
Briefly, my address maintained that fiction writers should be allowed to write fiction — thus should not let concerns about “cultural appropriation” constrain our creation of characters from different backgrounds than our own. I defended fiction as a vital vehicle for empathy. If we have permission to write only about our own personal experience, there is no fiction, but only memoir. Honestly, my thesis seemed so self-evident that I’d worried the speech would be bland.

Nope — not in the topsy-turvy universe of identity politics. The festival immediately disavowed the address, though the organizers had approved the thrust of the talk in advance. A “Right of Reply” session was hastily organized. When, days later, The Guardian ran the speech, social media went ballistic. Mainstream articles followed suit. I plan on printing out The New Republic’s “Lionel Shriver Shouldn’t Write About Minorities” and taping it above my desk as a chiding reminder.

Viewing the world and the self through the prism of advantaged and disadvantaged groups, the identity-politics movement — in which behavior like huffing out of speeches and stirring up online mobs is par for the course — is an assertion of generational power. Among milliennials and those coming of age behind them, the race is on to see who can be more righteous and aggrieved — who can replace the boring old civil rights generation with a spikier brand. . . .

As a lifelong Democratic voter, I’m dismayed by the radical left’s ever-growing list of dos and don’ts — by its impulse to control, to instill self-censorship as well as to promote real censorship, and to deploy sensitivity as an excuse to be brutally insensitive to any perceived enemy. . . .

Ironically, only fellow liberals will be cowed by terror of being branded a racist (a pejorative lobbed at me in recent days — one that, however groundless, tends to stick). But there’s still such a thing as a real bigot, and a real misogynist. In obsessing over micro-aggressions like the sin of uttering the commonplace Americanism “you guys” to mean “you all,” activists persecute fellow travelers who already care about equal rights.

Moreover, people who would hamper free speech always assume that they’re designing a world in which only their enemies will have to shut up. But free speech is fragile. Left-wing activists are just as dependent on permission to speak their minds as their detractors.

In an era of weaponized sensitivity, participation in public discourse is growing so perilous, so fraught with the danger of being caught out for using the wrong word or failing to uphold the latest orthodoxy in relation to disability, sexual orientation, economic class, race or ethnicity, that many are apt to bow out. Perhaps intimidating their elders into silence is the intention of the identity-politics cabal — and maybe my generation should retreat to our living rooms and let the young people tear one another apart over who seemed to imply that Asians are good at math.

Charles Murray Worries about the Future of Conservatism "IndyWatch Feed"

In an interview with Spiked, conservative crank Charles Murray worries about what support for Trump means:

Collins: You are a self-described libertarian, and your latest book is robust defence of freedom. Do you believe that Enlightenment values such as liberty are enough to stand up to the strong, often tribal, cultural forces at work today? Can they serve as a counter to those divisive forces?

Murray: A year ago, I would have given you a much more optimistic answer than I’d give you today. The thing about the Trump campaign that has been most disheartening has been the realisation that the electorate on the right, voting for Republicans, has many more people in it than I ever realised who don’t give a damn about freedom. They are motivated by the kinds of tribal instincts that you describe, and they are also populist in an authoritarian sense, in that they don’t want to limit government, they just want to use the powers of government for their own ends. In the short-term, then, I’m very pessimistic. I am very undecided about what will happen, but I suspect the Republican Party is going to go into serious decline. And, insofar as it does not go into decline, it is not going to represent policies that foster limited government and freedom. It will be a party that fosters a different kind of authoritarianism than the left does. The only difference will be in the type, not the authoritarian nature of the policies.

Brazil’s President Michel Temer Says Rousseff was Impeached for Refusing His Economic Agenda "IndyWatch Feed"

Brazilian President Michel Temer let an open secret become explicitly clear during a speech to business and foreign policy leaders yesterday in New York. The country’s elected and now-removed President, Dilma Rousseff, was impeached because of her position on economic policy, rather than any alleged wrongdoing on her part, her installed successor admitted. Temer’s stunning, and seemingly unscripted, acknowledgement will surely bolster the view of impeachment opponents that Dilma’s removal was a “parliamentary coup d’etat.”

In his remarks, Temer clearly stated what impeachment opponents have long maintained: that he and his party began to agitate for Rousseff’s impeachment when she refused to implement the pro-business economic plan of Temer’s party. That economic plan which Rousseff refused to implement called for widespread cuts to social programs and privatization, an agenda radically different from the one approved by Brazilians through the ballot box in 2014, when Dilma’s Workers’ Party won its fourth straight presidential election. The comments were delivered on Wednesday to an audience at the New York headquarters of the Americas Society/Council of the Americas (AS/COA).

Watch the video:

“And many months ago, while I was still vice president, we released a document named ‘A Bridge to the Future’ because we knew it would be impossible for the government to continue on that course. We suggested that the government should adopt the theses presented in that document called ‘A Bridge to the Future.’ But, as that did not work out, the plan wasn’t adopted and a process was established which culminated with me being installed as president of the republic.”

When impeachment proceedings began, Temer was serving as Rousseff’s Vice president and his party, the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party (PMDB), were once close partners with Rousseff’s Workers’ Party (PT). However, they officially broke their alliance in late March, supporting her impeachment and aligning with a right-wing coalition supported by business leaders and conservative ideologues. It is that center-right coalition that now controls the government in post-impeachment Brazil.

The program “Bridge to the Future” – proposed by Temer’s party – prescribes cuts to health and education spending, reduced welfare benefits, a raised retirement age, new private sector partnerships and decreased market regulations. These ideas were the ones Temer advocated in his speech yesterday at AS/COA, which emphasized his government’s push for privatization and foreign investment. The newly installed President listed the multiple benefits and guarantees that his government intends to offer foreign investors. Those benefits including guaranteeing the profit margins of the business leaders who watched him speak while consuming their meals.

The AS/COA groups which Temer addressed is composed of members of multinational corporations and the U.S. foreign policy establishment focused on Latin America. Both were founded by the American industrialist David Rockefeller and have as its President Emeritus John Negroponte: the former Reagan and Bush administration ambassad...

Why the Middle Class is Dying "IndyWatch Feed"

OUZILLY, France – First, some travel advice…

A niece was visiting from North Carolina. She left this morning for Paris.

We warned her, “Paris is the biggest tourist draw in the world. Naturally, it also has a thriving industry that preys on tourists.

“People will come up to you and say: ‘Do you speak English?’ You’ll be eager to help them. Just say ‘non,’ and keep walking. Or they’ll pretend to find a gold ring on the sidewalk, just behind you. They’ll ask if it is yours. Just keep walking.

“Watch out for gypsies. They work in groups. One will bump into you or distract you, while another picks your pocket.

“Oh… and don’t smile. If you smile, they’ll take you for a tourist, especially an American.

“The French don’t smile at strangers. They think they only have a limited supply of smiles; they’re not going to waste them on people they don’t know.”

Largest Theft in History

Now, back to our beat…

As expected, Ms. Yellen smiled yesterday, announcing no change to the Fed’s extraordinary policies.

For the last eight years, she has been aiding and abetting the largest theft in history.

Thanks to ZIRP (zero-interest-rate policy) and QE (quantitative easing), every year, about $300 billion is transferred from largely middle-class savers to largely better-off speculators, financial asset owners, and the biggest borrowers during that period – corporations and the government.

The financial press, nevertheless, finds something vaguely heroic about enabling the grandest larceny ever. Bloomberg:

Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen braved mounting opposition inside and outside the U.S. central bank and delayed an interest-rate increase again to give the economy more room to run.

The U.S. economy is barely limping along. As we showed last week, when you adjust nominal GDP growth by a more accurate measure of inflation – David Stockman’s “Flyover CPI” – you see that the economy is actually in recession.

Room to run? It is backing up!

Bloomberg continues its brain-dead coverage:

While agreeing that the case for a rate rise had strengthened, Yellen on Wednesday argued that it made sense to put off a move for now amid signs that discouraged Americans who dropped out of the labor market are returning and looking for work.

“The economy has a little more room to run than might have been previously thought,” Yellen told a press conference in Washington after the Fed’s two-day meeting, as she explained the decision to keep rates on hold. “That’s good news.”

Voodoo Trade

We listened to Ms. Yellen’s remarks. She sounded like a well-trained functionary, a technician.

Lots of economic mumbo-jumbo. Academic phrases. Latinate words and passive sentences.

She might have made a good doctor, we thought. Or maybe a decent metallurgist. In an honest métier, she might have been able to hold her head up high.

Instead, the poor woman is condemned to ply her voodoo trade, pretending that it is based on science, and feigning that it improved the economy.

Pity the economist without a sense of humor…

His head must ache when he hears Ms. Yellen talk. His heart must break when he sees his profession brought to ridicule by its most prominent practitioners. His gloom must deepen into a profound darkness, as he watches the world’s No. 1 economy manipulated by nincompoops and scoundrels.

One Way To Avoid a Terrorist Attack "IndyWatch Feed"

I’ve predicted this before and was, unfortunately right. I am talking about more terrorist attacks. I hate to say this—again—but I’ve got this weird feeling we’re about to get hit again but bigger than the last two micro-attacks using a knife and a homemade bomb. It isn’t difficult to predict these events, really. One only need to look at the history of al-Qaida to understand that attacks will continue, grow larger and bolder in scale, and will also go on for at least a decade or more. Folks, we ain’t even into half-time with ISIS attacks yet.

I wrestled with what I am about to say. I don’t want to be giving anyone ideas. But at the same time, if I don’t sound the warning on things I think could happen, I fail in my duty as a journalist. I’m not here for ratings or fame. Besides all of this, if one looks at the nature of ISIS attacks in France, and the ones here, one can predict what may happen next without giving anyone ideas they probably aren’t already planning right now.

We’re at a critical time right now as far as the “low-hanging fruit” that will be very tempting to entities such as ISIS and their do-it-yourself crew of ISIS Amateur Night imitators. How and why? We are going into a presidential election year and our elections take place at the beginning of two major holidays seasons, those being Thanksgiving and Christmas. But what’s the most dangerous of all scenarios is the shopping frenzy that begins earlier and earlier each year. My gosh, places already have the Christmas shopping promotions out!

I think if more attacks are going to occur, they’re going to hit the Christmas shoppers at the biggest malls and Christmas sales. I also would think that, based on the attacks in Europe, if they hit an airport, it’ll be for the Thanksgiving rush because that’s the one with the least amount of time to get from place to place. Now, the reason they would do this is because the elections will have already taken place. If the goal is to create some type of political carrot (or stick they can use as a tar baby to get the U.S. stuck in another no-win war), then they’re going to want to hit Thanksgiving travel and Christmas shopping. Because those are two things that will create the most headlines and fear. I doubt they’re going to hit the elections or polling places. But if they do, that’ll be a whole new chapter which will reinforce the “they hate us for our freedom” myth and that’ll sell everyone on another Middle Eastern war. Which, of course, will not be won and will be just a tar baby to suck the United States into willingly.

Instant Access to Current Spot Prices & Interactive Charts

If or when these attacks happen, there will be a lot of anger, fear, hatred, sadness, anxiety, and other emotions the government will exploit in one way or another. People will demand the government embroil us even further in this never-ending cycle of violence because they have become attached to this illusion of revenge. The desire for revenge is then fitted to this need to defend the Great American Ego and people then carry this incarnation of delusion around with them and think it to be a “response” to terrorism. But I will show you a more excellent way.

The terrorists operate on large crowds. Now, I’m old enough to remember when you saw no one on the streets during Thanksgiving or the day after. Not because they were cowering in fear in some “safe room” bunker inside their homes. They were embracing one another with love and giving thanks for one another and what they had. Not what they were going to GET, but what they HAD. Understand this: You cannot be kille...

The Invention of the Wheel "IndyWatch Feed"

In today’s world, technology is developing at an unprecedented rate. The latest gadget today is tomorrow’s antique. As a result of this rapid development of technology, we often take things for granted. One of these is the wheel. Take a look around, and you will see wheels everywhere, be it as tyres, or in everyday machinery. The wheel has even been imbued with symbolic meanings, most famously, perhaps, as a metaphor for the never-ending cycle of life.

One may be tempted to think that the wheel is just a humble or even primitive invention compared to some of the fancy gadgets that we have today. Nevertheless, the wheel (specifically as a means of transportation) was actually invented at a relatively late point in human history. The oldest known wheel found in an archaeological excavation is from Mesopotamia and dates to around 3500 BC. This period was known as the Bronze Age, which is a relatively late chapter in the story of the development of human civilization. By this time, human beings were already planting crops, herding domesticated animals, and had some form of social hierarchy.

A Mesopotamian wheel

A Mesopotamian wheel. Photo source.

One of the reasons why the wheel was invented only at this point in history is due to the fact that metal tools were needed to chisel fine-fitted holes and axles. This leads to the next reason – the wheel was not just a cylinder rolling on its edge. It was a cylinder that was connected to a stable, stationary platform. This wheel-axle concept was a stroke of genius, but making it was a challenge. The ends of the axle, as well as the holes in the center of the wheels, had to be nearly perfectly smooth and round. Failing to achieve this would result in too much friction between these components, and the wheel would not turn. Although the axle had to fit snugly in the holes of the wheels, they had to have enough room to allow them to rotate freely. Given the complexity of the wheel-axle combination, it may be unsurprising that the wheel was not initially invented for transportation purposes. Instead, it has been claimed that wheels were first used by potters. Remember the 5,500-year-old wheel for Mesopotamia? It seems that it was a potters’ wheel (the use of wheels for pottery making may date even further back into the Neolithic). It seems that the use of wheels for transportation only happened 300 years later.

The Looming Smash-Up of the World’s Economy "IndyWatch Feed"

Ambrose Evans-Pritchard has written an article on a United Nations report on debt and default.

He is a Keynesian. He worries about deflation. Deflation is the ultimate negative sanction in his view. Like all Keynesians, he does not understand the healing effects of deflation.

But I read him because he provides data on the fragility of today’s debt-based Keynesian economy. What he fears, I look forward to the day of reckoning on debt, which is the bastard child of central bank inflation and government deficits. Like an unwed couple, Keynesians want to continue the liaison, but without negative consequences. There are always negative consequences.

The third leg of the world’s intractable depression is yet to come. If trade economists at the United Nations are right, the next traumatic episode may entail the greatest debt jubilee in history.

The Jubilee was Mosaic Israel’s mandated year of return to the land distribution of the original generation of the conquest. It applied only to rural land. It did not apply to real estate in walled cities. The heirs of the families of the conquest got back their land. The larger the families, the smaller the parcels. The law also liquidated all debt, including commercial debt. This was supposed to happen every 50th year. There is no evidence that this law was ever honored.

It may also prove to be the definitive crisis of globalized capitalism, the demise of the liberal free-market orthodoxies promoted for almost forty years by the Bretton Woods institutions, the OECD, and the Davos fraternity.

The Bretton Woods institutions are all a bunch of interlopers. Bretton Woods died on August 15, 1971 when Nixon killed it. The Bretton Woods system rested on the gold exchange standard. The dollar was redeemable in gold by central banks at $35/oz. Without this limit, the U.S. central bank could inflate at will. The federal government could run massive deficits financed by monetary inflation. That is why Nixon did it, and the FED responded as planned. The USA got the worst peacetime price inflation in its history.

Current Prices on popular forms of Silver Bullion

The liberals in the IMF and World Bank rejoiced. So did politicians. So did Keynesian economists everywhere. No more pseudo-gold standard. “Free at last! Free at last!” Free to inflate. Free to run massive deficits.

The bills are about to come due. Now we hear a new phrase. “It’s just not fair!” Ambrose Evans-Pritchard shouts this with gusto.

“Alarm bells have been ringing over the explosion of corporate debt levels in emerging economies, which now exceed $25 trillion. Damaging deflationary spirals cannot be ruled out,” said the annual report of the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).

Notice the limit: corporate debt. Not government debt. Government debt is always healthy in the view of Keynesians. There can never be enough government debt. They are apologists for the next round of government debt. But corporate debt — that’s dangerous.

We know already that the poisonous side-effect of zero rates and quantitative easing in the US, Europe, and Japan was to flood developing nations with cheap credit, upsetting their internal chemistry and drawing them into a snare. What is less understood is just how destructive this has been.

But how did these rates come into existence? By central banks, that pursued zero rates after 2008 to stimulate the economy. This was done to encourage mor...

The Defection of David Brock "IndyWatch Feed"

[Classic: March 10, 1998] — David Brock has become the first journalist to confess his participation in the vast right-wing conspiracy to get President Clinton. Actually, he confessed it last year, but nobody was listening.

In an open letter to the president in the April issue of Esquire, Brock apologizes for his epoch-making 1993 article in The American Spectator, the one that gave “Arkansas state troopers” a special meaning, like “grassy knoll” as of 1963.

Or, more to the point, like “bimbo eruptions” as of 1992 and “White House intern” as of 1998. The article also led, inadvertently, to Paula Jones’s lawsuit.

The president has accepted Brock’s mea culpa, but he may feel it’s a little late for apologies. Confessing you started a forest fire doesn’t make the trees grow back. This forest just happened to be unusually combustible. (Georgia state troopers probably don’t have many colorful memories of former governor Jimmy Carter.)

Since 1993, Brock’s career has taken some setbacks. His book on Hillary Clinton, for which he received a huge advance, died on the shelves, and he lost his high-salary job at The American Spectator. Vilified as a “right-wing hit man,” he hasn’t had a right-wing hit lately.

So now he’s making a second career of defecting from the right wing. He’s even trying to discredit the sources who made him famous: those blasted troopers “took me for a ride” and have since “greatly damaged their credibility.”

Say what? As a reporter, Brock was supposed to be able to size up the “credibility” of his sources at the time, precisely so that he and his readers wouldn’t be “taken for a ride.”

Current Prices on popular forms of Gold Bullion

So it was all a pack of lies? Here he hedges. “I’m not saying they made the whole thing up,” he says now. “I do think there was probably room there for them to exaggerate.” He admits that his own “ideological desire to damage Clinton” made him unduly credulous. He admits the same of his own book attacking Anita Hill, in which he says he was guilty of “hypocrisy.”

But don’t worry: “I’ve abandoned that form of journalism.”

Great! But why not just abandon journalism? After all, he has virtually repudiated his whole career, which is not the smartest of career moves. Confessing your crimes is fine, but don’t expect it to win you a job as a cop. And complaining that you were the victim of your sources doesn’t burnish your credentials as a reporter.

Brock is now telling liberals that he has seen the error of his ways. Like many ex-conservative defectors before him, he is bidding for a niche among his former enemies by denouncing his former friends, including the good ole boys who gave him the scoop of his life.

Those troopers don’t seem to have exaggerated much, judging from subsequent developments. Only Brock seems skeptical of them, just when history has vindicated them with a whoop.

Brock probably hopes to peddle one more book, titled something like Nasty Right-Wingers with Whom I Should Never Have Allowed Myself to Have Become Entangled and Whose Money I Should Never Have Accepted but Have Already Spent, Alas.

But the book to read will be the memoirs of Mike McCurry. Right now the president’s press secretary has the safest job in America, including the president’s.

Why? Well, Spin Cycle, a new book by Howard Kurtz of the Washington Post, tells a few inside stories about the Clinton White House and the press. One of them concerns a coarse crack McCurry once made to reporters about the Clintons’ sex life, comparing Mrs. Clinton unfavorably to a mummy. Rush Limbaugh has already repeated it about fifty times, and McCurry still has his job.

Under normal circumstances, the p...

Do WhiteLivesMatter? "IndyWatch Feed"

We have one simple question – how is beating, dragging, stripping, and laughing at an innocent white man going to help the discourse about police violence against black men?

In Charlotte overnight…

But that was not all… As Mediaite notes, among the many reports of violence from the Charlotte, North Carolina unrest Wednesday night was one particular shocking example: rioters tried to throw a news photographer into a burning fire. Local CW-affiliate WCCB was on the scene and tweeted out images of the fire and their initial report.

Car Costs You Can (And Should) Avoid "IndyWatch Feed"

The best expenses are those you can skip. Here are several ways to save money you don’t have to spend on your car:

*”Premium” gasoline –

I italicize the word for a reason. It’s a marketing trick. “Premium” implies better. But Premium gas is defined by something else – its octane rating. Octane is a measure of a fuel’s burn rate or – put another way – its susceptibility to ignition (combustion) as a consequence of pressure and heat (rather than spark).  High octane gas is more resistant to ignition from pressure and heat; this is important in a high-compression/high-performance engine. You do not want the gas to explode before the spark ignites it. If it does ignite prematurely, the force of the resultant uncontrolled explosion tries to push the piston – which is still traveling upward – back down, placing enormous stress on the piston, the connecting rod and – ultimately – the crankshaft. This is not good for your engine.

And it’s why it’s very important to use high-octane fuel in engines built to burn high-octane fuel.

But if your engine was not built to burn high-octane fuel, you are wasting money by purchasing high-octane gas. There is no advantage and several disadvantages. You don’t risk mechanical damage, but you will see reduced mileage and performance – because the premium (high octane) fuel’s burn rate isn’t in tune with the engine’s design. It will run less efficiently.

Why are the most advertised Gold and Silver coins NOT the best way to invest?

Read your owner’s manual (or the label that’s typically affixed to the inside of the fuel door) and use the grade of gas recommended by the engineers who designed your car’s engine. They made these recommendations for a reason. Don’t waste money on octane you don’t need – and “premium” that isn’t.

*Larger wheels (and tires) –

One of the most economically and functionally idiotic trends in vehicle design over the past twenty or so years is the mania for big wheels and tires.

Maybe you like the way it looks, but you might want to take into account what it costs.

First, opting for 18 or 19 (or 20) inch wheels usually adds significantly to the car’s purchase price. That’s the obvious one. But adding upsized “rims” also adds rolling resistance. Your car’s mileage goes down.

The cost of tires also goes up. The difference in price between a 16 inch (standard) and an 18-inch tire can be tremendous, especially if the 18-inch tire is a “summer” or “performance” tire. These also tend to wear out faster because the rubber they’re made of is softer. Road noise goes up – and ride quality goes down.

They’re usually terrible in the snow, too.

And, for what?

While it’s true the larger (performance) wheel/tire package can increase the vehicle’s high-speed handling capabilities, you ought to ask yourself whether your abilities as a driver are higher than the baseline tires’ capabilities. Some people like to think they are Bob Bondurant. Few actually drive like Bob Bondurant. And even if you are capable, do you actually drive that way on the street?

Save yourself some money on tires and gas (and brake pads, which wear faster due to the increased rolling resistance of oversize wheels and tires). Enjoy a nicer/quieter ride.

Skip the “rims” – unless looks matter more to you than dollars (and sense).

The US Assault on Syria’s Peace Process "IndyWatch Feed"

Events in Syria over this last week have thoroughly shattered the Russian-US ceasefire agreement reached in Vienna on September 9th between US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov. Last Saturday the US-led coalition comprised of US, Australian and UK fighter jets (2 F-16’s and 2 A-10’s) delivered four airstrikes on Syrian Arab Army troops near the ISIS besieged Syrian airbase in Deir ez-Zor, for the first time killing Syrian soldiers (estimates of 62-83 dead and up to 120 injured). Within 7 minutes after the Syrian troops occupying the high ground overlooking the nearby airbase were attacked, Islamic State militants were opportunistically able to launch an assault and successfully seized control of that strategic high ground. Several hours later the Syrian Arab Army eventually was able to push back to retake its lost position.

But Saturday’s rapidly unfolding events of the airstrike followed so closely by the on-the-ground terrorist attack unquestionably points to air to ground coordination between US and ISIS that strongly indicates the US-led airstrike was premeditated and designed to completely undermine the already tenuous ceasefire. This incident alone decisively kills any prospect for peace that would finally end the five and a half year war that’s killed more than 300,000 Syrian people and displaced over 11 million more.

The second critical incident that placed the final nail in the peace prospect coffin was Monday’s attack on a UN and Syrian Red Crescent Society convoy delivering much needed humanitarian aid to residents of Syria’s second largest city Aleppo, still largely occupied by ISIS and al-Nusra Front forces but for months under siege by the advancing Syrian army. The US immediately began blaming both Russia and Syria as an “act of revenge” for Saturday’s airstrike that the US feebly claims was an accident. A closer analysis of these two very much related, highly disturbing acts of violence speaks volumes on just how low the imperialistic US Empire is willing to stoop to sabotage peace in the war-ravaged nation that’s killed or displaced more than half the Syrian population.

Why are the most advertised Gold and Silver coins NOT the best way to invest?

America’s long history of breaking treaties starting with the Native Americans centuries ago that resulted in their subsequent genocide, right up to this week’s turn of events in Syria confirm that the US Empire of Chaos and Destruction can never be trusted. After the September ceasefire went into effect reconfirming February’s cessation of hostilities agreement, in addition, the US finally agreed to enforce calls for its US-backed “moderate” rebel militia groups to separate from both ISIS and al-Nusra Front (recently renamed Jabhat Fatah al-Sham), terrorists. However, with the US airstrike, the Syrian government declared that the truce was over after stating that fro...

I Learned the Lesson of History "IndyWatch Feed"

The lessons of history are very, very, very clear. Pick any year in history, whatever we think is true, that year, 1900, 15 years later, it’s a whole entirely different world. And we all know in 1900 how the world is, and we should be saying to ourselves, find me a weird guy. Find me a strange guy to tell me how this is going to change. 1950, 15 years later, everything we knew, everything we knew was totally wrong.

So I, at least, have learned that, that lesson of history. And perhaps that’s why I’m more– not interested, more I’m excited when I start looking at the way the world is today and what we all know. Because I know what we all know is not going to be true in 15 years, no matter what it is. And my problem is how do I figure it out. How do I figure it out? Whatever we know today, no matter what it is is not going to be true in 15 years.

I’ve learned over my career, not just my career, but reading about the world, the stranger it sounds, the more you should say, wait a minute. That sounds really strange. Let me look at it. Let me hear what’s going on. Because I have certainly learned that over my life, not just my life. You read history. You read anything. As I said before, the lesson of history is that most people don’t learn the lesson of history. They ignore the lesson of history. Now, we all know that if we’d invested in China 1981, we’d be the richest people in the room right now. And yet, in 1981, including me, we would have said what’s wrong with you? Don’t you know about Mao Zedong? Doesn’t he know about the Great Leap Forward? Doesn’t he know about all this stuff, what “Chinese” is?

Or Japan: Don’t you know about the disaster of what this country was? If you’d said Japan, don’t you know about Hiroshima? The atomic bomb? You don’t know about the dictator, the emperor? How could you  invest there? They’re little, bitty yellow people who must be dishonest and cruel. But those are the lessons of history.

Are You Getting Enough Fiber? "IndyWatch Feed"

A healthy lifestyle involves eating lots of fiber, but how do you know if you’re actually getting enough? The daily recommended fiber intake for men and women over the age of 50 is 38 grams and 25 grams, respectively. But those are just numbers. How can you tell how much fiber you’re eating?

Fiber is an integral part of a healthy diet as it plays a role in many bodily functions. If you think you may not be getting the recommended amount, watch out for these five signs indicating that your body needs more fiber.

5 signs you need more fiber

You fail this digestion test: Eat some corn without chewing. When it comes out on the other end can tell you how well your digestive system is performing. If the corn kernels make an appearance within 18 hours, you have a healthy digestion. If it takes longer, you need more fiber.

If any of these five signs of low fiber intake apply to you, do not fret. Adding in more fiber to your diet is fairly easy. Stock up on dark leafy greens and other vegetables. Swap out your refined bread for whole grains. Try a fiber supplement if getting fiber in through dietary means is a challenge.

Bad Timing, Worse PR "IndyWatch Feed"

No matter which side of the fence you are on politically, it was poor timing on the part of Ford to announce it was moving production of the Ford Focus and C-Max to Mexico.  After all, this is an election year and one Presidential candidate or the other is going to take offense to any major announcement.  In this case, Republican candidate Donald Trump has been outspoken on American jobs going outside our borders.

I have tried to look at both sides of this issue, and on the air during the Car Pro Show, I never show any political leanings, it’s just not wise to alienate any part of your audience.  If you must know, or if you wonder, my politics have generally been towards the conservative side, but I waiver, like most.

So the announcement of the new Mexico plant seemed to me like one that could have waited by Ford until after the Presidential election.  I still don’t see the reason why a huge American corporation would put itself in the limelight of either side of this debate.  It doesn’t seem like a subject that would endear the masses to your car company, but I digress.

Myths, Misunderstandings and Outright lies about owning Gold. Are you at risk?

The facts are fairly simple…given the labor cost of building a small car in the U.S., for every one you sell, you lose money as an automaker.  That has not always been the case, but more recently with lower gas prices and the shift to SUVs, small cars just aren’t doing very well.  However, all automakers must continue to make them to meet CAFÉ (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) ratings.

For me, the question is more about the big picture.  Is it worth losing some jobs in America in the short term, for a healthier Ford Motor Company?  I have to say yes.  If Ford can make smaller cars in Mexico a lot cheaper, meet its EPA goals that are mandated, and make small cars profitable for the bottom line, if I were the CEO Mark Fields, it would be an easy decision.

If Ford went on the offensive, which it should have, they would note that they actually closed a heavy-duty truck plant in Mexico last year, and moved it to Ohio.  The rumor mill says that the plant it is closing will re-open making the Ford Ranger and Bronco, two vehicles that could preserve jobs overall.

The Ford CEO, not one who has been my favorite over the past 40 years I have been in the industry, still has a responsibility to the shareholders of the motor company.  He must do what is best for the good of all, without regard to being politically correct.  Looking back to around 2008, you know that then-CEO Alan Mulally did that exact thing.

Just about every automaker builds cars away.  The Japanese car companies have opened many plants here, all the automakers ar......

Left-Wing Cruelty to Black Students "IndyWatch Feed"

Last year’s college news was about demands for safe spaces, trigger warnings, and bans on insensitivity. This year’s college news is about black student demands for segregated campus housing and other racially segregated campus spaces and programs. I totally disagree with these calls by black students. It’s a gross dereliction of duty for college administrators to cave to these demands, but I truly sympathize with the problems that many black college students face. For college administrators and leftist faculty, the actual fate of black students is not nearly so important as the good feelings they receive from a black presence on campus. Let’s examine some of the problems.

A very large percentage of all incoming freshmen have no business being admitted to college. According to College Board’s 2015 report, the average combined SAT score for white students was 1576 out of a possible 2400. Black student SAT scores, at 1277, were the lowest of the seven reported racial groups ( The College Board considers a SAT score of 1550 as the benchmark that indicates a readiness for college-level work. Only 32 percent of white students scored at or above proficient in math, and just 7 percent ofthemselves ridiculed, isolated and treated differently. As a result, students who might be successes in a less competitive environment are turned into failures. One faculty member at a historically black college put it this way: “The way we see it, the majority schools are wasting large numbers of good students. They have black students with admissions statistics (that are) very high, tops. But these students wind up majoring in sociology or recreation or get wiped out altogether.”

The problem of black education begins long before college. The National Assessment of Educational Progress, known as The Nation’s Report Card, shows that nationally in 2015, only 7 percent of black 12th-graders scored proficient in math, and only 17 percent did so in reading. This suggests that the average black 12th-grader has the academic proficiency of a white eighth- or ninth-grader. Consider the following question: If one admits 1,000 randomly selected eighth- and ninth-graders to college and admits 1,000 randomly selected 12th-graders, who do you think is going to come out on top? Who would be surprised if the eighth- and ninth-graders felt inferiority, oppression, and insensitivity?

The academic elite feel righteous seeing blacks on campus, even if they are severely mismatched. Black people must ask: Are we going to sacrifice our youngsters so that white liberals can feel good about themselves?
